I know I haven't been so great with the linkspam entries lately, between the Real Life entries and the Cloverfield entries, so I'm going to try to put a little something up now. I'm leaving for midnight Harry Potter at about 11 pm, so I won't be here for a while (significant, because most of my internet usage is at night these days). Exciting!

I'm also gonna go out on a limb here and say that my desktop pwns yours:

God, I hope we get good trailers.

Short-listed sites that missed the final cut included the Acropolis in Athens; Paris' Eiffel Tower; the Easter Island statues; Britain's Stonehenge; Cambodia's Angkor Wat temples; New York's Statue of Liberty; and the Alhambra in Spain.")

I'd totally watch a film version of Aida. Heck, I'd also watch film versions of Jekyll & Hyde and The Scarlet Pimpernel, though perhaps not the musical for the latter.

Scarlet Pimpernel movie-musical FTW! With Terrence Mann. Having never seen Jekyll&Hyde, I can't comment.

I think I'm starting to wear out my '82 Pimpernel DVD already.
I think we're due for another good adaptation of that one. I found the BBC miniseries mediocre and downright weird at times.

Shatner recalled, "There's a Star Trek movie and I called Leonard. I said, 'Leonard, have you heard?' He said, 'Yes, I have.' I said, 'What do you mean?' He said, 'I've read the script.' I said, 'Is it a good script?' He says, 'Yeah.' I said, 'Am I in it?' And there was a pause. He said no and then he began to laugh. I went through the phone as I grabbed him by the throat. He's in it. I'm not in it."

Heh, I'm charmed.

Ok, following the link from the Elizabeth review, WTF is this woman smoking? (http://historymedren.about.com/b/a/257956.htm)

But the writers and producers of The Tudors have really done their homework. I kept looking for mistakes and misrepresentations, but each time I thought I'd caught them out, my biography of Henry (by J. J. Scarisbrick; University of California Press, 1968) backed them up all the way.

I want to read this book now and see just how wrong it is, because how could it possibly be backing the show up? I mean, I love it and all, but I have as much fun picking out the wrong bits.

Somehow, Massachusetts has managed to royally screw up the whole jury duty thing.

Here in Boston, they will have summoned every single eligible resident (18+ years old citizen non-felons, who haven't served in the last three years) in the county before the end of the year, and are talking about changing the law to allow them to re-call people who have served more frequently. The thing that's absurd about this is that the reporting rate is 22%, meaning that 78% of the people who get called to jury duty don't show up. Now some of those may be out of state students or other people who have legitimately moved (some of whom the state may be too incompetent to find), but even if you call that a third of the no-shows that still means that two people shirk for every one that shows up. Now, when I got called I was pretty concerned about what the impact on my lab work would be if I got stuck on a monthlong trial, but by god I showed up anyway. I don't understand why, if there's a juror shortage, they don't start enforcing the penalties for not showing up before they start telling people who served they have to come back.

I actually feel really sorry for the HP stars. I'd hate to be hounded by cameras everywhere I go. That cement thing looked fun, though.

I'm a little disappointed that the Banaue Rice Terraces (long touted as a "wonder of the world"), wasn't mentioned as even being on the short list. That it's even still existing - and still producing crops - not to mention having been made totally by hand up and down most of a mountain range? I would have thought that might have counted for something.

On the other hand, there sure were a lot of interesting candidates for the short list. Them's the breaks, I guess.
