Okay, Sister Girl's sent me the photos. For the full story of what happened, see the previous entry.

#6: Notice how the driver's headrest is nearly touching the backseat.

#4: Notice how the broken windshield and, uh, the trunk are now in the backseat.

#5: Notice a conspicuous lack of deployed airbags.

#1: I don't even know how shit like that happens. It's like someone just crumpled up a ball of paper.

#8: RIP, Mookie.

ETA: I didn't notice it until just now, but if you look closely at the road in the third picture, on either side of the car, you can see her papers strewn across the interstate.

Sweet 8 pound 6 ounce baby Jesus.

The fact that the airbags did not deploy scares the living poop out of me, never mind the seat falling back like that.

Get a lawyer, and send them after Toyota NOW. They'll love a juicy case like this.

Airbags are frelling VITAL. I know they saved my life last year when I had my accident.

The fact that her airbags didn't deploy is actually totally normal, the front of her car is barely damaged. The sensors are under the front bumper, you have to do extensive damage to the front bumper and side panels to set your airbags off, generally. For future reference, here are where the airbag sensors usually are:

People always ask me why I'm such a nervous driver. This is why.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
This is why I don't drive AT ALL. Technically I know how, but any time you get me out on anything more complicated than a two-lane residential, I start hyperventilating. It's kind of like, my sister's a great driver and this is what happened to her. How am I not going to burst into flame?

That looks more like a Toyota-funded mansion to me. Lord, your sister was lucky.

My prayers that she continues to just be bruised and sore, but my caution to have her checked out again in a few days/a week just to make sure.

Wow.

WOW.

The more you said about it, the more serious it sounded, but my GOD.

I don't know if front airbags are designed to deploy in case of a rear collision, but the driver's seat collapsing backwards is a Major Design Flaw. So, yeah. Lawyer time.

See, they're not, but as she walked me through the play-by-play, we realized there *was* a front-end impact--when she went into the median. So they should have gone off.

The impact alone could have done damage, but throw in the faulty seat and airbags, and...wow. Sister Girl is lucky. Hope she's doing as best as possible, under the circumstances.

I second emeryboard's recommendation - keep a close watch on your sister and have her go to the doctor again in a few days. Sometimes, injuries aren't apparent so soon after an accident.

Aww, thanks. Technically she hurt her left hip and shoulder, which should start bruising up any moment now. I was just glad she didn't hurt her neck, although she may have and we just don't know it yet.

Jesus H. Roosevelt CHRIST.

The airbags alone could probably set her up for life. Add in the rest and your whole dang FAMILY is probably set for life.

Aw, Mookie.

So, I still don't quite understand. Did the driver's seat itself come unattached at the bottom, and shoot into the back seat? Or did the seat just break at the "hinge" the way it looks in the photos? Or both?

Date: 2007-07-09 04:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
What it sounds like is--you know how you can lower a front seat so that you're kind of leaning back or lying down? It's like it fell all the way down by itself. It didn't shoot backwards at all--that's the back of the car getting *pushed up* to the front half.

Holy crap! Considering the fact that the entire back of the car was smooshed into the back seat and that her seat was pushed into the back seat as well, it's a miracle she didn't sustain any serious injuries. Geez... I can't believe the airbags didn't deploy.

Yikes. I am glad she's in one piece.

That reminds me--there's some kind of maintenance that has to be done on airbags every few years, or there's no guarantee that they'll work, IIRC. Something I need to check into on my car.

1) Holy Shit. SO glad your sister's okay, and kind of amazed that she is. I didn't think it was -this- serious until the pictures. Thank god there was no one in the back seat.

2) HOLY SHIT, THATS MY CAR.

Like, color and everything, that's my car.
