I have a number of moderately profound thoughts (more on horror writing, and a mental list I like to noodle around with called People I Would Like to See Shot into the Sun), but I haven't even replied to comments on the previous entry yet. I spent most of the day pleasantly comatose, up to my eyeballs in over-the-counter cold medicine, while the pups boarded at the vet while the carpets dried. Good times. So here's the linkspam culled from my Google Reader, lest I fall behind, and also because I really want to post that Paris Hilton is going back to jaaaaaaaaaail. JAAAAAAAAAAAAAIL!

Paris Hilton back at home to serve out sentence under house arrest, "medical" reasons cited; DA raises holy hell. JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIL!

The new Transformers theme. I'm sort of watching in horror as this picks up more and more steam as THE non-Potter movie of the summer, not because it's Michael Bay and not because it's "some brainless action movie," but because Transformers was the cartoon that always disappointed me by NOT BEING SHE-RA. WHY IS IT NOT SHE-RA TIME YET? I AM EIGHT YEARS OLD AND UNFORGIVING. Also, because I'm kind of afraid I might end up liking it. And with Hugo Weaving involved, that's a distinct possibility. (As [livejournal.com profile] skyblade pointed out, how hilarious is it that Weaving's gotten typecast as the Guy Who Doesn't Like Humans?)

I Am Legend Trailer Hits. Dammit, this is opening on my birthday? The birthday where I traditionally go see a birthday movie? Well, it better damn be good, then.

(Poster: I Am Legend. Is this the best you can do? Seriously, maybe I'll just go see The Golden Compass two weekends in a row.)

Trailer for The Brave One (Neil Jordan, Jodie Foster, Terrence Howard) online.

Stardust commercials: Not as accurate as one might hope. "One of the TV spots somehow managed to give the vague impression that this film is a romance between Claire Danes and Robert DeNiro, which is just wrong on so many levels."

Damon, Greengrass to Emerald City.

Naomi Watts to Star in We Are All the Same.

Edward James Olmos: "Blade Runner Failed Because of Harrison Ford."

Moore Writing I, Robot Sequel.

Stills: Julianne Moore's Savage Grace; Fantastic Four 2: The Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Hey, they're still trying to make that Blair Witch prequel. Good luck with that, kids.

Sarah Jessica Parker Says Time is Right for 'Sex and the City' Movie.

Amanda Bynes Leads ‘The Seven Dorks.’

'Knocked Up' director Judd Apatow sued by author of... Knocked Up.

Disney Sets Narnia 3 and Prince of Persia Dates.

Connery picks retirement over 'Indy 4.'

Frank Miller’s Return Trip To ‘Sin City’ Still Moving Forward; Miller Says Sin City 3 Planned, Too. "That story [SC3], Rodriguez divulged, would concentrate on Miller's 'Hell and Back,' the story of a hallucinating artist named Wallace." Aww, I didn't really like that one. "Rumors have persisted for months that the role of Wallace was being written for Johnny Depp, a casting coup that Rodriguez himself was coyly confident would eventually happen." ... I'm sorry, was I saying something?

Oh, Paris Hilton, what are we going to do with you?

Hmm. I'm not sure how I feel about a Sex and the City movie. I mean, the show is just beyond amazing. I have a feeling a movie would take it to a different level, and I'm not sure if it would be an improvement... I guess we'll see!

Re: Sex and the City - my immediate first thought was 'why?' I *love* the show, but I guess I like the story closed as it is. A movie would either try and continue the story in some way (and then, how is it any different from a two-hour long epilogue-type thing) or try and squeeze the essence of the whole story into one tiny piece for those who may have missed it in the first place... I'm not sure either of those could live up to the awesomeness it already achieved. Why ruin a good reputation?

Do you remember the episode of Friends where Ross plays his "music" at the coffee house and he's just like...really impressed with himself? That's what the new Transformer's theme reminds me of.

I Am Legend is (loosely?) based on a novella by Richard Matheson called (appropriately enough) "I Am Legend (http://www.amazon.com/I-Am-Legend-Richard-Matheson/dp/031286504X/ref=pd_bbs_2/102-0228929-2469769?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181281643&sr=8-2)". The Omega Man is based on the same story. God knows if this new version of I Am Legend bears much resemblance to the novella, though, since it doesn't really sound like it. The book's great, though.

HEEEEE. I loved She-Ra and He-Man and the Thundercats because they were SO PRETTY (especially He-Man--that was some fierce pageboy he was working along with that bandolier-and-fur-thong outfit) but I had a sneaking love for G.I. Joe and the Transformers, too. Especially Optimus Prime. He was noble and selfless, sort of like Abe Lincoln, if Abe Lincoln had been a semi that could turn into a giant robot and fight another giant robot who turned into a big gun.

Can we leave Paris Hilton alone? The myth that justice in America is blind to class and social status was already busted by the OJ murder trial. Further evidence is superfluous.

Paris Hilton: dangerous criminal mind. Perhaps all such convictions should be punished by house arrest. Perhaps community service is better.

Why *are* these people driving themselves? If I had that kind of money, I'd never drive again. Oh, to never have to deal with traffic, or getting lost, or finding parking, or walking eight blocks to get where I wanted to be, or having to moderate my adult beverage consumption so I can drive home ... yes, if I ever hit the lottery, a driver would absolutely be the first thing I'd splurge on! I have no sympathy at all for rich people who get in trouble while driving. It's just *stupid*

An I, Robot sequel? Really? Because that movie had precious little to do with the source material... it was essentially Law and Order: Robotic Intent, and do we need another one of those?

Date: 2007-06-08 07:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyvyola.livejournal.com
I could have dealt with I, Robot the movie if, within the movie, they'd said, "Well, we based our programming on author Isaac Asimov's famous Laws of Robotics," and then it would have been fine that everything went to hell in a handbasket because they were bad programmers. *g* But instead, they made a movie that specifically went against those Laws and the whole philosophy behind them.

Apparently, when the studio decided to go with a robot flick, somebody said, "Hey, we own the rights to I, Robot" and they slapped the title on a totally unrelated plot and just went with it.

i was similarly not at all into transformers, but my longest friendship was initially cemented by being ten years old and watching she-ra together. (and was recently renewed by being tipsy and watching she-ra on dvd together!)

also, i've read the "original" knocked up, and all i have to say on the issue is: aha, she wishes. (well, admittedly, my first reaction had a lot more profanity in there, but i've mellowed since.)

I have faith in the movie. Both the Neverwhere book and TV show were good, so we know that Neil Gaiman's stuff is good both onscreen and on=page. How involved was he, anyway?
Yay! Dawn Treader is one of my favourites! (in order: Horse and His Boy, Dawn Treader, Prince Caspian, Lion, Witch, Wardrobe, Magician's Nephew, Last Battle, Silver Chair). Any they're making Prince Caspian first, with that guy who plays Young Dunstan Thorn in Stardust. WIN.
