Hey, you know what's really disgusting? When someone leaves a white pride community screed/advertisement on the entry about my dog dying.

The comment field is white because it's kind of apropos I've already screened it. It doesn't deserve any kind of logical reply, or even a "How dare you," etc. What it deserves is for the commenter to be banned to Kingdom Come and back--not for the hateful "white pride" bullshit, because Livejournal probably can't do anything about that due to the First Amendment, but for 1) spamming a community advertisement, period, 2) on pretty much the least appropriate entry possible. I mean, yes, the fact that I would get to see this cretin banned is a bonus. It's funny, you know, because I am proud of my Anglo-European mutt heritage, but all this "White Pride" shit does is make me feel ashamed. So I'm going to be contacting Livejournal and see what I can do. I'm trying to figure out a way to do it without unscreening the comment, though, and I'm not sure that's possible.


ETA: Aaaaand the user has been suspended. According to vees, the community targeted in the comment is also in Russian--but seems to be innocent and misrepresented. I'm hearing that other people got hit by the spammer as well, and it's starting to sound like some kind of weird grudge. I'm not sure which is worse--that some spammer might have been advertising a white pride community on the entry about my dog's death, or that a spammer might have been waging a grudge war against an innocent community... ON THE ENTRY ABOUT MY DOG'S DEATH. What the fuck, people, seriously.

Are you just trying to prevent others from replying to that particular comment, or do you not want anyone to see any information at all about the community etc? If that's the case, I think you could unscreen it and just freeze the thread so that no comments to it would be allowed.
If you really want to keep it quiet in your own journal, though, I think you can still report the community to LJ to see if they'll consider it a violation of their Terms of Service (http://www.livejournal.com/abuse/report.bml). I don't think they'd need to see the promo in your journal to be able to evaluate the content of the community.

Well, I don't want people to reply, but I also don't want anyone to see the comm URL at all (I guess I'm afraid somehow that someone here would actually be *interested*), while at the same time I don't want people here to go over there with torches and pitchforks. And I'm afraid they won't be able to do anything about the community itself just for the content, because there's probably a free speech issue involved--just going off the comment itself, I didn't actually see anything threatening. Just the kind of logic you know *leads* to threats and hate.

Yeah, if you squint really hard, you can see sort of a double standard, but I think it's a standard based on a zero-sum idea of pride--"if you're proud of being black, I can't be proud of being white," etc. Or "If I'm proud of being white, I have to be proud of everything white people do, even things that are shitty." I'm proud of the good things in my heritage, whether it's good things white people or English/Irish/Scottish/French/German people or women or Americans or Alabamians have done, and I'm not proud of the bad things; you can be proud of the good things in your background and not proud of the bad things, and that doesn't take anything away from me. It doesn't seem all that difficult to me, but apparently a lot of people have problems with rectocranial inversion these days.

This FAQ [http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=197] (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=197) covers LJ's policies on spam and community promotion. "Promoting your community by posting unwanted or unsolicited advertisements in communities or journals is a form of spam, and is not permitted. Community maintainers are prohibited from requiring that their community's members promote for their community."

So, I'd keep the comment screened for now, but not delete it. I'd contact the Abuse Team using the info in the FAQ I referenced. You may also want to point out that the same people posted the same info here (http://news.livejournal.com/98422.html?thread=44774006#t44774006) in the news community.

I don't know to what extent Abuse can/will do anything about it, but it looks like that kind of community promo spamming may be against LJ's Terms of Service. So that may get that user and or that community banninnated.
