Judge sues cleaner for $65M over pants.
Jin Nam Chung, Ki Chung and their son, Soo Chung, are so disheartened that they're considering moving back to Seoul, said their attorney, Chris Manning, who spoke on their behalf. "They're out a lot of money, but more importantly, incredibly disenchanted with the system," Manning said. "This has destroyed their lives."I think we need the Sarcastic KFC Judge to rule on this one.The lawsuit was filed by a District of Columbia administrative hearings judge, Roy Pearson, who has been representing himself in the case. According to court documents, the problem began in May 2005 when Pearson became a judge and brought several suits for alteration to Custom Cleaners in Northeast Washington, a place he patronized regularly despite previous disagreements with the Chungs. A pair of pants from one suit was not ready when he requested it two days later, and was deemed to be missing. Pearson asked the cleaners for the full price of the suit: more than $1,000. But a week later, the Chungs said the pants had been found and refused to pay. That's when Pearson decided to sue.
Manning said the cleaners made three settlement offers to Pearson. First they offered $3,000, then $4,600, then $12,000. But Pearson wasn't satisfied and expanded his calculations beyond one pair of pants. Because Pearson no longer wanted to use his neighborhood dry cleaner, part of his lawsuit calls for $15,000 — the price to rent a car every weekend for 10 years to go to another business. "He's somehow purporting that he has a constitutional right to a dry cleaner within four blocks of his apartment," Manning said.

David Yates to Direct Half Blood Prince. What this says to me is that Order of the Phoenix is really, really good, if they're willing to have him back rather than continue the rotating director thing. I still want Cuarón back for the seventh (haters, keep in mind: any problems you have with missing plot is not necessarily the director's fault), but the OOTP trailer looks fantastic, so...

Date: 2007-05-04 02:31 am (UTC)You may be right there -- I think that's kind of what happened with Chris and the first two; the first was a huge success (though to be fair, they were hard-pressed, I think, to screw up the first Potter film, but hey, credit where credit's due). I think that definitely inspires confidence as to the quality of OotP as a film though, which sounds great to me.

Man, I'd love for Cuarón to come back SO HARD. That would be just too awesome.

Date: 2007-05-04 05:00 am (UTC)The line a place he patronized regularly despite frequent disagreements with the Chungs instantly marks him as an asshole. If you don't like the service, you don't go there anymore. Heck, if he'd been that difficult, he should have been forcibly evicted and refused service from then on. My guess is he'd been kicked out of every dry cleaners in the vicinity and the Chungs were the only ones willing to tolerate his bullshit.
Seriously, this judge sounds like the most self-entitled asshole on the planet. Service to rent a car just to go to the dry cleaners? Fucking a family business out of every cent they have just for spite? (And, DAMN, they were actually willing to settle for $12,000? They sound like saints on earth.)
I have never wanted to punch someone in the throat so badly in my life.

Re: Ah, a subject near and dear to my heart.
Date: 2007-05-04 11:15 pm (UTC)My hope is that his current position as a judge is reconsidered, because people in a position of power who are willing to file these bullshit suits are the reason there is such an issue of litigation in the US.
Re: Ah, a subject near and dear to my heart.
Date: 2007-05-05 02:41 am (UTC)Exactly! The article alleged to be lost turned up found, thereby negating all reasonable grounds for refunding the cost of the suit -- I do hope the man is disbarred for such arrant lunacy.
Here's hoping this case never makes it into common law. Every entrepreneur would have just cause to be frightened for a ruling in favor of such an idiot.

Sadly, I can't get the POTC clips to play for life of me. I've tried absolutely everything I can think of, refreshed the play window, updated Windows, redownloaded Quicktime, you name it. I'm at a total loss, so I suppose I shall just have to be patient and content myself with the descriptions on the webpage. Thanks again for the link!
