OH MY GOD. My mother calls me just now, because she was going to meet someone who works with my stepfather for lunch at Silvertron, but she got there and there was yellow tape all over the place, and a cop told her, "Well, you won't be eating here today, because someone was just SHOT DEAD."

ETA: Okay, the "good" news is that it actually happened this morning and not, like, in the open dining area during business hours. The bad news is that it was the owner.

I don't know! But it comes on the heels of two restaurant robberies in town, so I am not happy. No one in this town needs to have lunch, ever.

Ack! My mom's gone to meet the woman she was having lunch with, i.e., away from Silvertron, so you're actually more likely to hear updates (please share!) than I am. I hope your friend's okay!

Was it an Italian restuarant, because I thought that only happened in movies about the mob.

At least she wasn't IN there.

Yeah, planning on having a nice, relaxing meal-date and ending up spending HOURS answering police questions (when all you really want to do is go home and relax because you're still jumpy from witnessing a crime/murder) is one of the crummiest things EVER.

When I was younger I thought it would be exciting to witness a crime, but now that it's happened a few times, I just try to make a discreet exit when the men in blue show up.

It turns out that the owner was killed before they opened, which is terrible, but none of the waitstaff or customers were in danger. The cop made my mother think that it had just happened--not on purpose, but just in the way he tossed off "Someone's been shot dead."

Ha, that happened to me once. A friend of mine and I went to see a movie in Union Station in DC, and when we got there, found out we couldn't get in because someone had been shot to death in the showing before the one we wanted to go to.

Freaky stuff!

In my hometown we were friends with a guy named Charlie. I was really young when I was living there, and since his diner was right across the the road I'd walk over all the time and get a gumball and a soda or something. He was the nicest man in the world. He gave me free hashbrowns on Saturday mornings, because I am a hashbrown addict.

One day he fired a line cook that couldn't keep up. The next day the line cook came back and shot him to death.

Tiny town in Wisconsin...

Oh my God!

And that article reads exactly like an intro to a Law and Order episode. You know, the innocent but slightly rebellious people head into a place they think is perfectly safe, saying funny dialogue along the way, blah blah, everything is fine and then suddenly OMG BODY CALL DETECTIVE BRISCOE. (Except Det. Briscoe is now dead, which makes me sad.)

Whoa. This past Christmas, someone was killed in the diner on the block next to my apartment. It happened at 3am when these guys apparently stalked into the diner and confronted someone who was eating there. Then they shot him and walked out. I was away on vacation at the time, but still...brrrr.

HOLY CRAP. Dude, I'm glad your mom's OK, though. When I read the first bit I pictured her escaping disaster by a thread.

You just know whoever did it is going to be in serious trouble, too, and they deserve it, if the reviews on that first link are anything to go by and the restaurant ends up closing*. Southerners can understand the occasional need to shoot somebody, but don't mess with our food.

*OK, not like a dead person isn't bad. But a dead person and a good restaurant being shut down on top of it is just all kinds of No Way.

The first article in that list is about a murder too, and I find it funnily ironic that the murderer's name is "Killingsworth". :P

Perhaps I shouldn't be saying that though...
