Gwyneth Paltrow's dress was trying too hard and it made her small breasts look sagging. Mirren's dress was dowdy. Blanchett's dress was smart, but who needs a business-suit-coloured evening dress? Penelope Cruz's dress made her look gorgeous, which is a plus, but it was trying too hard too. Reese Witherspoon's strapless black dress fit her better than Emily Blunt's navy one and Rachel Weisz's lank oyster satin confection (and certainly better than Sacha Baron Cohen's fiancée's one) but in every case, the line of the décolletage rode too low for elegance (I don't mean that it showed cleavage, which isn't necessarily a problem, but that the dress didn't have a natural line (look under her arms how low it gets!) J'Lo's dress made her look pregnant (if you have to wear a high Empire waist, the line should be slinky) and the multi-necklacy-neckline looked like she'd ripped off a designer Christmas tree. Jennifer Hudson's red dress was a revue number and the least said about Nicole Kidman's red pussy-cat-bowed arch little number, the better. Only Winslet had total class.
I'm going to say that Winslet totally captured old Hollywood class and trumped the rest of the contenders there. Close runners up were Mirren, Weisz, and Cate Blanchett. In defense of Kidman, that dress toog guts, and she did pull it off. Blunt's dress reminded me of the glittery plastic of a bowling ball or one of those kiddie rides at a county fair. JLo's dress scares me. Witherspoon was dressed nicely, but her hair was dull. Paltrow's dress had a great figure, but bordered on making her look as though her legs were a mermaid's tail, which made the color even stranger.
I'd say Anika Noni Rose's red dress, to be honest. Jennifer's was going OMGBEWBS too hard, Beyonce was too many ruffles(very like Hermione's Yule Ball Dress, to be honest), but Anika? Mmm, red classy sparkly.
I love outfits and design and how things come together and I think that only three dresses made me excited and since I couldn't vote on the one I liked best (the person below you wrote about it), I went for Paltrow. It had the most class and fit her really well I thought.
I'm so thrilled you included Jennifer Hudson's crazy apple red [yes, a cousin to candy apple red] dress in your Best Dressed poll. While she doesn't seem to be the crowd favorite at the moment, trust me; the nod is enough.

... Perhaps this is bordering on TMI, but I have been obsessed with that dress since I was a little girl in the Bronx saw her performance last night-- or, rather, what it represents. I have been sketching that dress like no tomorrow, and I hope to post more pictures that the one to which you linked in my NEDAW communities.
Speaking of: Few people know this, but yesterday marked the beginning of National (http://www.edaw.org) Eating Disorders (http://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/) Awareness (http://www.edap.org/p.asp?WebPage_ID=337) Week (http://www.nedic.ca/whatsnew/nedic.shtml) (NEDAW). As someone who has both struggled with an eating disorder and has decided to try to do her small part in the battle against the Goliath-esque forces which indirectly but consistently perpetuate these diseases, well... seeing a success story like Jennifer's last night opened my eyes [and nearly teared them].
What it came down to, for me, was:
She isn't skinny, she wasn't chosen as the American Idol; but here she is as a gorgeous, talented singer and Academy-Award winning actress. Hell yes.

So... that lengthy anecdote was unnecessary at best, but I just wanted to say:
This is where you need to make a way for me to vote for Cate AND Helen, Cleo! I am going to have to think about this.
I'm also going to be a rebel and say that Kate Winslet's dress did absolutely nothing for me. It was wishy washy, made her look wishy washy and the addition of a spinnaker to her dress greatly disturbed me. (A lot like with Nicole's dress. Seriously, ladies.)
Honestly, I think the color was the reason I just couldn't get 100% on board with Winslet's dress--the color was lovely, but I kept wanting it to be on someone else, and for Kate to wear one of the brighter colors she often picks. She had a gorgeous turquoise (I think?) dress earlier in the season.
And yet for some reason, Helen Mirren's dress didn't wash her out, even though she ended up all one color--it was harmonious instead of washy, for some reason.
I might have to ask my flist! I've been flicking between the two and honestly I CAN'T CHOOSE.
I think the colour could have worked better on Winslet if she still had her red hair. I think it might have actually been the washed out blonde that lost her on me with this. I think the colour would have looked striking with her old hair colour.
I think there was enough texture in Helen Mirren's dress to stop her looking washed out. Between the texture of the top part and the patterning on the body, it gave just enough variation for her to look absolutely divine.
The skirt also looked fantastic when she was walking away from the podium--really good movement on it. The whole dress just looked so right--easy and unforced and perfect.
And you know what? I think I'm going to go with you on the red hair. That's exactly what that dress needed.
Yeah, that's it. I remember Cate's dress as being more green-silver than grey silver, but that's probably a combo of my memory and eyesight tricking me.
Strange thing is, I actually did a fashion poll on my lj before the Oscars, just picking out dresses from Valentino I liked, and the one Cameron Diaz wore came out top. I was pleasantly surprised to see her wearing it. It's a cool dress.
The fashion is the only part of the Oscars I know anything about -- I work at a newspaper and had to put together our red-carpet photo page, so I was scouring the arrival pictures as they came across the wire. I picked Kate for sheer classiness, though Cate was a very, very close second and Reese was an equally close third. I ran a big ol' picture of Kate and Helen as my lead art and included a smaller one of Cate, but I forced myself to leave Reese out completely because I led with her last year. WOE.
I have no idea which client you might be using, but through Eljay itself having multiple polls is easy. Open the "create poll" page in another tab/window, for as many polls as you want. Then when you're done with them all, copy and paste all of the codes into the same post. Ta-da!
I had to deduct points from Rachel because of her necklace. It was totally wrong with the neckline (even if the neckline hadn't already been bejewelled). If she had to have a necklace, it should have been a choker.
Definitely have to second you on the Winslet thing. The colour did nothing for her--that shade of green is very, very hard to look good in; even Liv Tyler hardly pulled it off in Return of the King and she had the help of lots of dark hair!
You know what, the brown dress Hudson wore didn't do justice to her at all, and the lame shrug thing was horrible and ungainly and made her *look* huge, because it cast shadows that obscured her waist. Meanwhile, the red dress and the gold dress, which I don't even know that I saw until it hit GFY (http://gofugyourself.typepad.com/go_fug_yourself/2007/02/oscar_fug_carpe_12.html#more) were fantastic. (If I had seen that gold dress before this evening, I would have put *it* on the poll.) And they weren't about obscuring her figure or hiding it; they were about showing off what she's got to her best advantage. And I love that she had three dresses total and looked great in all of them, because you see then that it's her body that's great and not some fashion sleight-of-hand. And I think women need to see that--and that designers and retailers needed to see that too, because I think a lot of times they forget that not only do real women look like that, they can look GOOD like that, and they need clothes that are worthy of them.
I think Cate looks the best in her dress, but I actually like Reese and Penelope's dresses better, if I were to choose for me. And Helen's would be great for my mum. I quite liked Jennifer's, too, though not for me. It would have been a good choice for pregnancy concealment. Rachel should have worn it last year.
I hated Gwyneth and Nicole's. Gwyneth's was drab and made her look droopy. Nicole's washed her out totally - she's too pale to wear that colour.
