My hands are okay, but my back is starting to hurt.

(Melissa Etheridge, y’all!)

Steve Carell explains Little Miss Sunshine (“The car is a character... No offense, but man, am I glad they’ve improved their product line”).

Will Smith, here with the deep thought that the thread you will find in common with all American films is that... there is none. P.S. Here’s a montage from Michael Mann. Bonus points for juxtapositioning a KKK scene from O Brother Where Art Thou? with Malcolm X. And then, from Talladega Nights: “Dear Lord Baby Jesus...” Bonus bonus points for using Blade Runner and Dr. Strangelove. Negative minus points for using a clip of Crazy Tom Cruise from Magnolia. I mean, just on principle.

Here’s Kate Winslet with Best Editing. This is another strong category where even I have a hard time playing favorites; I like how they show three sets of single-camera footage at the top and then the finished cut below. And Thelma Schoonmaker wins for The Departed, which I have a hard time complaining about because she is awesome. Apparently she’s won three Oscars for Scorsese films? That is cold. They must actually hate him, y’all.

Here’s Jodie Foster in another one of those Grecian-draping gowns. And it’s breaking my heart, but her nose is really starting to look whittled down. She says, choked up, that she lost her best friend Randy Stone two weeks ago, and thus we enter the Annual Death March of Deathly Death. (I don’t mean to sound flippant--that’s what I call it every year.) Among the listed: Don Knotts, Red Buttons, Darren McGavin, Sven Nykvist, Joe Barbera, Tamara Dobson, June Allyson, Gordon Parks, Philippe Noiret, Maureen Stapleton, James Doohan, Shohei Imamura, Peter Boyle, Sidney Sheldon, Jack Palance, Mako, Jack Warden, and Robert Altman.

I am perhaps a bit too fond of the Montage o' the Dead.
Now, Jodie, love the dress but nooooot the hair.

I thought Jodie looked good! Pretty, even. And feminine.

I thought she looked surprisingly good too. Although, as my cousin pointed out, she shouldn't have let Edwars Scissorhands do her hair.

Did anyone else think Mann’s montage was pointless? And just kinda stopped?

so far MOST of the montages are pointless. And they wonder why the daman show runs over every year.

I would also like to add to your cry of despair for Mako.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who noticed Jodi's nose. It's almost whittled to nothing on top. Eeep.

How did I miss that Philippe Noiret died? I have three movies featuring him atop my DVD player, right now.

Thelma Schoonmaker truly is awesome -- she actually used the word "panoply" in her speech. I was impressed!

Heh. "Flippant" is waking your spouse to blithely announce "Robert Altman won the dead dude applause-o-meter!"

Thank God that's over. I love the Awards to death, but that was too long even for me. I don't know how the East Coasters managed to stay up for it- I'm exhausted from watching and its only 9:30!

I really think they need to start earlier. 7 Eastern, instead of 8 (really, 8:30). If they even just moved the red carpet walking up by 30 minutes, we would have been done at a slightly more reasonable time.

YAY Marty! I knew he had to be getting it when I saw George, Steven, and Francis walk out there. So happy for him and he was just thrilled to peices and everyone was so happy for him, which made it even better.

Still shocked The Departed,/b> won best picture though. I really thought Little Miss Sunshine would win.

Also mad props to Forrest Whitaker for pulling it together and giving such a kick ass speech.

If Marty hadn't won, there may well have been riots. It's about damn time.

Also, I do not begrudge Forest Whitaker his Oscar--I didn't see the movie, but I understand he was brilliant--but seriously, Academy, Peter O'Toole will die without having won and that is INEXCUSABLE.

OMG, Randy Stone, Casting God is dead. How very sad. He did casting for X-Files, Millennium, Space: Above & Beyond and other fun stuff like that. Not someone anyone is likely to know, but I'm still sorry to hear it.

Whee, Dr. Strangelove!

I forgot to mention it at the time, but I squeed out loud at the Ed Wood clips in that writer's thing. I like all these little pieces. the writer's one, the foreign film one (The Sea Inside was so good) and the American film one..

I love all these Greek stye dresses. Especially J.Lo's.

sadface for Peter Boyle and Jack Warden.

I said it elsewhere, and will say it here, that I got Comedy Value Points from the inclusion of Tom Cruise in the lame "America" montage, by chirping "RESPECT THE COCK!" at an unseemly volume.

Because I am a child.
