cleolindaMy mother's still desperately searching for something "special" for my stepfather for Christmas, but I'm pretty content with my shopping. Of which there was a lot. No moviegoing yet, though.
Also, I got a fantastic package at my PO box yesterday, and I have no idea who it's from.

Thierry Mugler interprets Perfume to the tune of fifteen blends and $700. THEY MADE THE SMELL OF PEOPLE. The one Süskind described as being sort of sour and cheesy. My God, they MADE that one. They made a blend that smells like virgins! THEY MADE AMOR ET PSYCHE. Holy crow.
(Seven hundred dollars! Fifteen blends, but still! The sad thing is, Beth at BPAL could probably make a very similar set for less than two hundred, if it weren't for trademark/licensing issues. Because I'm sure if "Nuit Napolitaine" wasn't trademarked before, it is now.)
ILM's POTC2 showcase--for Oscar voters, I imagine, because it does an excellent job of showing what they started out with (actors in mocap jammies interacting with the other, costumed actors during normal filming) and what they ended up with (photoreal half-monster characters who retain an amazing amount of expression). Keep an eye out for the clip ("Now we're just haggling over price") where you can drag the little window around and actually see the original footage as it plays. I don't know if I'm just a giant geek or what, but I thought that was endlessly cool.

Angel was quite unusual when it launched, startingly so, although it's ubiquitous now in some places in the world (like San Francisco, where I live). I think he'll do a far better job at interpreting perfume than BPAL can or will. BPAL suffers from cheap ingredients and a sameness of base notes - almost everything has that same amber-y/patchouli base. I tried about thirty different imps of BPAL products before I gave up and realized that a house like Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier is much more worthy of your money.

Date: 2006-12-24 12:57 am (UTC)Yes, I know Maitre very well. I adore his single notes/small blends - I wear Passiflore Fraiche quite often, since I adore the scent of passion fruit and passion fruit flowers. Honestly, he is a wonderful perfumer.
ZOMG, I am friending you. I did a huge discussion on my journal with my flist about perfumes not too long ago, which you would have probably really liked.
Seriously, if I won the lottery, no doubt that I'd spend an inordinate amount of money on high end perfume. And I SO agree, most mainstream perfume houses make absolute crap product, with cheap synthetic ingredients, fillers, etc.
The cheapest I'll go is Comptoir Sud Pacifique, and I absolutely ADORE their products. Vanille Ambre is sex on wheels!
Have you ever smelled Christian Lacroix's namesake perfume for women? It's TOTALLY unexpected; no sweet notes at all.
So, do you troll the rare and unusual scent websites like I do, constantly earmarking what you want to try next? :-)

I would also spend an absurd amount on exquisite perfumes if I were to win the lotto. For the moment I try and curb my wanton perfume habit in to a few bottles every so often. Mainstream perfumes have really hit the bottom of the barrel lately from the celebrity fragrances (does anyone really want to smell like Britney Spears) to the repetitious remix frags every house is hell bent on putting out now. There is no respect for perfume, its just a cash cow to them. I haven't even given Sephora a second glance when it comes to fragrance since they stopped stocking Annick Goutal. CSP is their single saving grace. They don't even have the classic Guerlains!! Ok thats a rant for another time but the search for quality is a long and arduous one. I troll the websites and fragrance blogs reading reviews and I like to go on little sniffing trips to try things I've heard of and perchance discover something new. I'm supposed to hit Le Labo after Christmas to finally smell Bergamote 22. At the moment I'm an utter Frederic Malle and Serge Lutens fangirl. I did a post earlier this year about my experience meeting Frederic and
acting a foolshaming myself publicly.I totally earmark what I'm going to try next, I'm always on the hunt for that perfect "fill in the blank" fragrance. This summer it was all about getting the experience of summer in a bottle and right now I'm on the hunt for my dream gourmand.
I haven't smelled Christian Lacroix's scent but I shall have to hunt it down :D I just love him, whenever I think Lacroix I get this great image of Edina and Pasty getting knackered in couture.

My fragrance evolution went from traditional scents when I was a little girl (Miss Dior, Love's Baby Soft) to spicy scents when I was a young teen (Opium, Cinnabar) to more complex scents (Niki de St. Phalle, Poison, etc.) when I was in college to, inexplicably, being attracted to very heady fruit or flower blends. I think my favorite single notes right now are a pure and true ylang ylang flower, because it's just indescribably divine and hallucinatory, and the datura flower.
I am so in agreement with everything you've typed above. I think St. Laurent can still make a decent fragrance, because the house takes a long time before adding a new fragrance to their line, and I grew up loving Rive Gauche due to my mom. I have a huge love for Baby Doll, with that incredibly delicious grapefruit, but it's weird; it's more of a fragrance for yourself, rather than for attracting boys or girls, isn't it?
Malle is divine. I've never worn any of his scents, but man, when I smell them? GORGEOUS.
Sephora stopped carrying Goutal? WHAT? BLASPHEMY! What heathens. I do credit Sephora with turning me on to a few good lesser known things; the stores, at least in SF, still carry a huge range of French and Italian stuff that some department stores don't carry. I do credit them for turning me on to Hanae Mori's Butterfly, which had a luscious strawberry top note mixed with a kind of incense-y base that I wore assiduously for about two months in 2001.

Bergamote 22 sounds beautiful; I can't stand the smell of bergamot on myself, but I love it on other people.
All celebrity fragrances are due to fail, except for the Chanels that were concocted while Coco was still alive. Ugh.
You know what the tragedy of BPAL is? The site is so gloriously imaginative, and the presentation so beautiful, that if they did their fragrances with better ingredients, I'd be singing their praises to the sky.
Please, please tell me that you've perused Lucky Scent's website? (http://www.luckyscent.com/) With all of the glorious offerings that they have?

I'm still mad at Laudamiel for Youth Dew Amber Nude which smells like B.O. of the worst kind on me. Bois De Jasmin (http://boisdejasmin.typepad.com/_/2006/11/thierry_mugler_.html) has a full review of the set. Its tempting if only just for Virgin No. 1. Scratch that I want Noblesse. I must have Noblesse. If only the bottles were bigger then I could maybe justify it.
