Horoscope of Eerie Aptness: Like a pointillist painting by Seurat, your life is made up of many small details that add up to something lovely. But as with that painting, what you see when you focus closely is a bunch of unrelated pieces. Take a step back, and things will fall into place -- you'll see that the complete picture is distinctively beautiful. Try not to be too caught up in your life's details today, and congratulate yourself on the wonderful masterpiece that you're in the process of creating.

That was deep, yo.

Okay, so I know I said I hoped December would be better, but I didn't expect it to be immediately better... for a while. We'd gotten a metric shit-ton of packages this week, as a result of that Black Friday shopping online I mentioned, and my mother was opening what she thought was a case of pecans (what? We do a lot of Christmas baking) when it randomly turned out to be an early Christmas present for me. I missed out on the Dracula blends and the Glitter resurrection at BPAL, but then I remembered that I have all my Yule samples from last year, so I'm going to go pull those out in a little bit. I think we're getting our Christmas tree tomorrow, for God's sake--even though it's going to be a dry crisp by Christmas day, the tree is Christmas, as far as I'm concerned.

(Tannenbaum tangent: When I was little, we used to keep it in the living room, which had a hardwood floor and an oriental rug and a grand piano and kind of had that Southern parlor thing going. That way, the tree was visible from the front window, although we had to scrape between it and the sofa to get to the door, but there was no way in hell we'd have been able to fit it in the den. So the living room pretty much became the Christmas Room: my mother's miniature Christmas village houses on the mantel and on the back of the piano resting on their cotton batting snow, the stockings over the fireplace (which was real, and not just gas-log like our current one is), the garlands and the lights and the Nativity knick-knacks and all that. We didn't have a front hall; you walked in the door and you were in the living room, and you had to pass through to get to any other room. But despite that, we were almost never in it, so at night it would be completely quiet and still. The sitting area of the room was arranged around the oriental rug, but between the back of the sofa and the front windows, we had a space that passed for a front corridor, and there was a smaller rectangle of rug there. I used to pretend it was my flying carpet. Well, during Christmas, I could lie on that rug and imagine what it would be like to be very small, small enough to hop from branch to branch, as small as the ornaments themselves. My mother had a set of porcelain dolls she would hang up, and I had a little rag doll in a swing that I named Melissa, and we also had a little rubber Mountain-Climbing Santa, plus tons of animal and cartoon ornaments. Wish Bear, Strawberry Shortcake, Big Bird Whose Nose I Chewed Off [What? I Was Only Three], you name it. I was a strange child, but I wasn't communing with the ball ornaments. There was at least some anthropomorphization going on. Clara had a nutcracker; I had a tree.)

So that was nice. But then Sister Girl threw a grand mal fit du shit over--I don't even know. Something relationshippy. It involved tears and throwing things and scaring the dog. Let's just say that I was very much in the mood for "Fairytale of New York" at that point ("'Happy Christmas' your arse, I pray God it's our last").

Central Missouri simply doesn't normally see this kind of weather: the last time they closed parts of I-70 was during the Mississippi's flooding in '93. Nobody can remember it ever being shut down because of snow. But, around 100 miles were closed on Friday and my mom was stuck on it for eleven hours. The fact that she was driving with a camper that had a functioning bathroom made her very popular with her fellow stranded drivers. :)

Holy crap, Rickman is going to play the judge. I guess this means Jim Broadbent will be the beadle, and Sacha Baron Cohen will be Signor Whatsis. Wow. Great cast. I'll even forgive Helena Bonham Carter as Lovett for this (actually, I knew Burton would cast her the second I heard he was directing - it's not a bad choice).

Can't wait for this movie, and he's better not screw it up.

The Chaucer blog thing: Baba Brinkman is a rapper who did an adaptation of The Canterbury Tales (it's really good, too-- he just performed at my university, which amuses me to no end). I guess you're not a real rapper until you have a feud with somebody. And I didn't see Chaucer's response earlier! That is brilliant.

Well, during Christmas, I could lie on that rug and imagine what it would be like to be very small, small enough to hop from branch to branch, as small as the ornaments themselves.

So, I didn't have a magic carpet, but I definitely spent many hours making up stories about all of our Christmas ornaments, and how they all interacted with each other and made up a little community, and how our big golden angel at the top of their tree was their benevolent god / guardian. So it wasn't just you.

I gave up waiting for _Movies in Fifteen Minutes_ to come out in the U.S. I gave in and ordered from Amazon UK.

Did I tell you I'm writing a NOVEL? Yes, way. (If I did ... then did I tell you recently?)

The title seems to be _Savant_. The eponymous character is one Jacob Avram Amitai Cohen (do you get the feeling he might be Jewish?), a young mathematician, probably specializing in number theory. He's an aspie savant, a genophobe, and a neurotic mess. Most of his best friends are numbers, especially prime numbers and perhaps their "opposites," highly composite numbers.

Oh, and there's a human love interest, too, just in case you're starting to yawn. Her name is Angela Jean Liorit Korngold. She must be awfully patient to put up with all his quirks ...

And in case you were wondering: no, it's probably not quite as breezy a read as I made it sound. :P

BPAL question...

Date: 2006-12-04 01:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sea-of-tethys.livejournal.com
Um... I've finally decided to take the plunge and start buying some BPAL stuff. But I'm a bit confused over their bottle sizes. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth my while paying international postage for some imps and then ordering bottles later, or if I should just go ahead and get a couple of nice-sounding bottles. How big is an imp, actually? Like, is there actually enough stuff in the bottle that you can wear it a few times? I only know the metric system and I have no idea what 1/32oz looks like!

Re: BPAL question...

Date: 2006-12-04 02:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Have you ever seen those perfume sample bottles that department stores sometimes give out? Little more than an inch tall, with a transparent white plastic stopper? Like this. (http://cgi.ebay.com/BPAL-5-Imp-Lot_W0QQitemZ230058797868QQihZ013QQcategoryZ11847QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) Those are imps--BPAL actually gives you an imp or two per bottle you purchase, which is how most of us end up with so many. That, and you can order the imp packs just to try things. Quite honestly, I have tons and tons of imps that I've never gotten through using--they last a surprisingly long time, unless it's something you just absolutely fall in love with and use a lot. And there are about seven imps' worth in a 5ml bottle, which lasts frickin' forever.

If you're paying international postage, though, you might just want to get a couple of bottles that sound good to you, with things you're absolutely sure you would like. (And if you don't like it, you can always resell it--the buyer would pay for the postage.) What were you thinking about getting?
