'Pirates' $55M Estimated Haul Sets Record:

Move over Darth Vader. Captain Jack Sparrow is king for a day. Preliminary estimates released by Disney show that "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" earned $55.5 million on Friday, which would set the record for the largest one-day take at the box office. The previous record was set last year by "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith," which grossed about $50 million.

The movie was shown on 4,133 screens, beginning at midnight Friday. Only 2004's "Shrek 2" and "Spider-Man 2" debuted on more screens.

Disney also received reports of continuous sellouts and requests to add more screens at multiplexes.

Hey, Em...? Maybe we should get there a little earlier than we planned...?

(Current poll results: 86% give it three stars or more; 72% for ticky box. Pirates of the Caribbean: Even more popular than Ticky Boxes.)

I would give it three stars out of five, but three out of four seemed to be pushing it, and "Nice try, no cigar" fit my reaction more, even though it did have some "Good times."

Also, yeah, you might want to get there early.

Now, the big question is: how much will Snakes on a Plane take in its opening day?

*just saw a SoaP tv spot that started with "Pirates may rule the seas this summer, but..."*

There was a huge line for an 8:30 showing last night just for seating. I got to my 6pm show 15 minutes before it started and it was packed.

Go early. I got there forty minutes before it started, and we were some of the last people to get in. And despite screenings every thirty minutes, they were sold out for all of Friday by 6:30.

wheeee!!!! I'm glad it's doing well-- the theatre we went to on Thu/Fri (midnight showing) was almost empty, though we were greeted by cast look alikes who were shockingly convincing! Well, didn't end up being empty, but it didn't look as packed as I expected and they didn't give their opening night, "We will take your cell phone away so help me god!" speech

Even our wee indie movie theater is showing Pirates - and their Thursday midnight show sold so many tickets they had to open a second screen. Yays!

I just bought tickets again for tonight and there were significant lines, almost out the door. Still not as bad as for HP (yet) -- the HP lines wrapped around the building, and there were scalpers -- but definitely lines of substance.

I had to stand in a twenty minute line to get in the theatre and I had already gotten tickets. GET THERE EARLY.

I am sooooo looking forward to the Pirates. Wee!

By the way, I don't want to sound like an ignoramus, but would someone please explain the "Ticky Box" thing to me? I mean, other than the fact that it's the cutest little phrase ever.

It's kind of a meme that's been around--at some point, someone bewailed the lack of a ticky box question in someone's poll (as opposed to a radio button question, where you can choose only one), and the rallying cry "Ticky box!" was born.

Oh, god, Cleo, just got back from seeing it. So good, so damn damn good. Are there problems? Yeah... primarly the usual Bruckheimer 'if big is good than bigger is better'.

but OH MY GOD. Must go see again. Can't wait to hear your impression

I just got back myself--I'm kind of shellshocked at this point, mostly because of the Bruckheimer Effect. That, and the rum we sneaked in. I think I'll know how I feel about it after a second viewing, besides "zomg awesome."

Hurray! Yeah, Bruckheimer was totally himself in the overthetop ginormihugeness of it, but it was totally zomgawesome!

So you liked it too and the zomg awesome? That was basically my reaction on Friday- even the shellshock. And the ending- what did you think of that? Opinions are divided. It rocked my world and sent me into ten solid minutes of insane laughter from pure sensory-overload brain short-circuiting.

And you seriously snuck in rum? I need to be 21, damn it. Well, I went dressed as a pirate TWICE (neither of which were midnight premiers), so the awesome score between us is even.

And by "even" I mean "I'm slightly less less-awesome than you now and my sad little Internet world is happy."

You are a woman of style and grace.

(Were there costumes? The showing I was at had some costumes, almost all of them humorous - no attempts at "cosplay." I only went as far as wearing the "Pirate's Life For Me" tattoo-flash tank that I got at Target a while back.)

No costumes that I saw, actually. One girl was wearing a cheap tiara and veil, like you'd wear on your bachelorette party on the town.

Dude, I'd go early. I work at a movie theater - we had 22 show times for it - from 11am to 11:15 pm and they all sold out - about 3 hours before each show started. And some of the show times were actually in two theaters.

Buy tickets the day before or early the day of the movie on movietickets.com, and then go early to get a good seat. We bought our tickets in advance, got to the theater forty minutes before showtime, and the line was already a good couple dozen people deep. Once they started letting people in, the theater filled up within two or three minutes.

Hey, Em...? Maybe we should get there a little earlier than we planned...?

Uhh, I just got out of work at the local movie theater and, um, word. It's seriously the easiest weekend to work ever since most of the shows are already sold out before I even show up. It's great.

We're showing it on three screens and it's sold out for every one the past two nights. Yarr!

In London here, there were nothing but huge lines at the Odeon (which was the only theater on Leicester Square, out of 4, to show Pirates) and it was pretty much sold out each showing yesterday.

When I went there on Thursday morning 10:25am, though, it was almost entirely empty. I guess not too many people cared to take a day off for it, or wake up so early to get there ;)

Yeah I went yesterday (in Cleveland) at this HUGE theatre to a 2:30 showing. We got there at 2 and got to sit where we wanted, but by the time the previews has started, couples who came in couldn't sit together and what not. There was like an offical seat controller guy with a walkie talkie. He was badass.

Anywho, I liked it. It was entertaining.
