Quickness:

The good: bookshelves! After five years of living in this house I am finally getting decent bookshelves, and two of them at that. We went to Let's Get Organized and picked out white metal shelves with grille bottoms that are really pretty, and, more importantly, four feet wide and six feet tall. We've put the first set together and wedged them into one corner; I was supposed to fill that one up with books before we did the other, but I'm starting to realize that's not going to work, for the simple reason that I actually want to lay my books out and group them by subject and/or author. You know, have all the Weirs together, all the Snickets together, all the books about movies together, all the Victorian together, and so on. And I can't do that until I've got both shelves up and can say, "This is the history shelf." So... back to moving boxes and piles of papers out of the way.

The bad: ROOFERS. I am about to go insane. Probably because we hired the really good, young-and-hungry roofer guy who said he'd have a whole troop of roof-elves keebling up there and they'd be done in two days. Which is great, but... imagine the hammering that's got to go on in order for that to happen. And now imagine that you live on the top floor, and they're pounding on the flip side of your ceiling. Arrrrgh.

I remember the roofers last summer. AHHHHHHHH!!!

I had roofers last summer, too. I live on the third floor of a three-story apartment building. They started pounding away at 7 a.m. On a Saturday. Headache? Much. Sleep? Not so much.

Actually, no, which is what's making this so difficult. After me saying for years that I can't clean because I don't have anywhere to put anything, it finally dawned on my mother that hey! I can't clean because I don't have anywhere to put anything! So we got the shelves. And when I move the books onto them, I'll have a whole three-part cabinet to move crap into.

That? Is a brilliant turn of phrase. Am jealous!

The manager at my apartments never tells us when we're going to have roofers. It's just one morning you wake up and - poof! Pounding sound!

It's the same with my school. They've been trying to fix the upstairs, so while you're sitting in the hall during lunch there's a random "POUND. pound. POUND. pound. Step step step. BANG" going on above you. We scream at them to at least fix the lighting while they're up there.

Bookshelves! Bookshelves are awesome. I say that because I stack my books on coffee tables.

Ah yes, roofers.

On the flip side, I have a giant woodpecker with a personal vengeance against my sleep schedule that bangs on the drain pipe right outside my bedroom window every morning at 5:30am. The bright side is yours will be gone in a few days ;)

UGH! I know what you're going through, when I lived at home a demon-woodpecker from hell used to wake me up every morning right about that time by hammering at the brick on the other side of my wall. *stabbity*

Book shelves are permanent. Roofers are ephemeral, so you win pretty big that way.

I would disagree. I've nearly had a bookshelf crash down on me, if I hadn't heard the cracking and moved in time.

Congrats on the new shelving. Would be great have more bookshelves. I hate having to decide which to put in storage. Mine is already double lined as it is. And here's hoping the roofers stick to their two day estimate.

Heh. When my parents were here right after the grayeaglet was born, my dad helped me by taking all the books off of our basement bookshelf (where I keep most of my fantasy and tv/entertainment books) and letting me put them into piles, and then he put them back up. I cannot tell you the relief I felt when all the Anne McCaffrey was finally together.

It is seriously stressing me out that my Alison Weirs aren't together because I can't find Mary, Queen of Scots. That, and all my children's/picture books, since I collect various illustrators.

(The grayeaglet! Eee!)

Yeah. Uh. No. What I meant was, because he had a new business, he was willing to come over here with a huge team, do the job really quickly, and charge way less for it as a way of spreading good word of mouth about their work. I actually haven't been outside today, so I don't even know what he looks like.

The book situation here has gotten completely out of control. My spouse built me two huge bookshelves...last year? Earlier this year? The things take up one whole wall in the master bedroom, and they're both full now. I'm back to stacking books on every available surface.

I'm considering gutting the utility room and turning it into a reading room. There's enough space in there for floor-to-ceiling shelves and a comfy chair. Granted, I'd have to share space with hot water heater, but it's either that or live in constant fear of permanently losing one of the dogs in a literature avalanche.

Oh my Lord, I feel you. My dream is to move into some little townhouse somewhere so I can have an entire room for just books. I mean, I guess my desk and computer and papers would be in there as well, but... books, mostly. I've got boxes upon boxes in the attic that I may or may not get to bust out for the new shelves.

I hate roofers! I had little shelves on my walls for years, with music boxes and glass figurines from my grandmother. I live in earthquake country and never had a single thing fall and break until the roofers came, and their banging knocked a ton of stuff down and it broke, including the music box that fell on my glass topped desk and broke that too. Damn roofers causing noise and extra damage!

well, at least they'll be done in two days? we had people who were working on our house for about a week and a half once and it was awwwffuullll. yay for getting the roof fixed, though!

*pat*pat* The roofers will be gone soon, though.

When we had our roof re-done, the crane dropped a bundle of lumber on the roof from a great height by accident and our cat tried to jump out the window and was spastic for the next three days.

Oooh, bookshelves! I have an irrational love of mine. My mother thinks I'm crazy because I have all mine in alphebetical order by author. It really makes things so much easier. I wish I had more space to place more bookshelves side-by-side instead of a couple tall ones, though - it really sucks, being 5'1 sometimes.

2 days?? That's insane. Our roofers were done in 5 days and we thought that was fast. They woke me up every morning but I never had trouble going back to sleep 'cause I am a giant cat--I can sleep any time, anywhere. But during the day? I had to keep reminding myself that the ceiling was not going to cave in and they'd be done for the day in 4 hours...3 hours... You have earplugs, right? Earplugs are your friends. :)

Good call on the metal shelves. Apparently wooden ones, unless you get the really expensive kind of wood, will slowly but surely eat away at your books. The acid in the wood doesn't react well to paper.

I had no idea! These were just adjustable, and relatively light (I mean, heavy enough that my mother and I are both sore from carting them upstairs, but can you imagine if they'd been solid wood?). That, and they're openwork and white, which means they blend into the cream walls and seem to take up less space than they actually do. I'm very pleased with them. : )

poor thing. i remember the summer my mom had her roof done(back in '01). imagine being IN CHARGE of the whole shebang(the having roofers over and making sure they don't wreck the house, etc) because the night before, my grandpa was rushed to the ER, and died later that week.

anyways, i got my MI single today! I'll be uploading the 4th & 5th tracks for you later this evening, after I put the baby to bed. Is yousendit okay?

I have two bookshelves (one wood and one plastic) in different corners of my room and they are overfilled with books. I also have three baskets, one filled with CDs, one with DVDs, and one with junk in it, and all in all, I have a room that has enough clutter to drive my neat-freak mother nuts.

I hope you have fun trying to organize your stuff altogether in those bookshelves of yours. Sounds like something I should do if I ever get around to re-organizing my room.

I have yet to see a roofer banging on the roof here (doesn't need any repairing), but if I did, I'd probably try to crank up the volume of my CD player a notch (not enough to render me deaf, but enough to lessen the noise).
