and I was so, so unimpressed by said theme that I can't even begin to explain....

I'm howling, but not surprised. Of all the nominated films, Crash was the only one that didn't deserve to win. Hence it was the Academy favorite. Remember Forrest Gump? Gladiator? Braveheart? We're not exactly dealing with aesthetic rocket scientists here. Still... am howling. A Brokeback win would have sent a powerful message. So fuck the Academy and their little dogs, too.

I just jumped on the Net after reading A BOOK.

Thank you, Larry McMurtry. Please, everyone, think of him the next time you hear rude jokes about Texans, for he is most like the Houstonians, Austenites and Dallasites I know: he book lovers who wear jeans to the opera.

Seeing Larry McMurtry was such a hoot. The jeans. The book-pushing. That and the fact that the song that won best song actually had something to do with the movie were the best parts of the night.

Well, and the 2 seconds of Russell.

I kind of want to step up and ASK them if they've at least seen Crash, as a way of comparing it with Brokeback Mountain so their opinion has some reasoning behind it apart from "ZOMG GAY AND DOOMED LOVE STORY JUST LIKE MY OWN LOVE LIFE". I kind of want to do it, but I won't, since drama is just as enjoyable from the sidelines.

Er, ah, yeah. Paul Haggis' LA is definitely NOT my LA, nor is it the LA of any other person I know -- white, black, Latino, Asian, whatever. Narnia was more realistic, actually. I guess those 500,000 DVDs the Crash producers sent out to Academy members really worked their magic on the tender sensibilities of guilty white liberals. I don't care so much about Brokeback losing Best Picture, even though I liked it, but this win was beyond the pale. Jesus.

Well, if it means anything at all, Ang Lee won for Best Direction, and no film came through with a whole sweep of wins... It was pretty much scattered throughout everything.

IMO, it is good to see Ang Lee get recognised for his work - He also did Sense and Sensibility, as well as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon among others - even if it didn't win Best Picture.

But then, this is all IMO.
