It's the funniest thing--I walked outside yesterday, and it was spring. Around here, spring usually hits the last week of February or so, so it's not like it wasn't right on time. But it's always funny, how you just look up and go, "Damn. It's spring." The daffodils are out in the yards up and down the street; the jasmine on our back fence has started to blossom again; the chirpy birds (as opposed to the cawing birds; we had plenty of those all winter) have come back. The sunlight even looks a little richer, a little more gold, than it did in February, which was the greyest, marshiest, most joyless month we've had for a long time. I kind of miss the cold already, as much as I like spring, but I guess the gardenias should be coming out soon, and cold snaps tend to ruin those. I just wish we had tulip trees--I used to love the ones we had on campus when I was in college, a whole row of them.

Defamer: "We were ready not to enjoy Point Brokeback, the roughly one-millionth send-up of this century's most parodied film. But we watched it, as we always wind up doing, and we have to say: Swayze and Keanu would've made a pretty good gay surfer movie."

Wait, this just in: The End Of 'Brokeback' Parodies. Sorry, you guys.

Stephen Glass-esque shenanigans at the Village Voice. If nothing else, read the original story (which seems, at the moment, to be mostly true) for info on the dumb-ass lines guys are apparently using on girls (except in New York, where apparently all the girls have heard them by now. "I need a woman's opinion. My friend wants to buy--" "A wallaby? And yes, I think David Bowie looks great these days").

And to finish up, IMDB vandals decided to have a little fun with (an apparently real, just not as described) My Little Pony movie. You know how I can tell it's fake? Not because it's ridiculously star-studded now--I can tell because the character names are stuff like "Yellow courageous glittry [sic] pony," rather than total porn star names. (I owned 500,000 ponies and I still only got four answers right, y'all.)

I noticed this, too. It was freezing cold Sunday, then I walked outside on Monday and Spring was like "Sup." and I was like "When did you get here, Spring?" and Spring was like "I caught a late flight last night and got in about 3 a.m." and I was like "Cool, cool".

[identity profile] anne-jumps.livejournal.com 2006-03-03 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's supposed to get colder again here over the weekend, but today was def. springy.

You know, when Kid Rock is calling you and idiot, you might want to step back, take a good long look at yourself and reevaulate your life. But really, I don't mind if he doesn't because it's just such comedy gold.

...and here we have about 9 inches of snow and the high tomorrow is supposed to be 18 degrees. But I'm not bitter!

Why must they bring Bowie into this? I read the original article about what's-his-face, The Game guy, in Elle. It was equal parts hilarious and depressing. These men are both gross and very sad.

Twilight Oils--I'm torn between thinking they're a little silly and totally wanting them all.

Usually spring comes soon for us, but this year doesn't seem to be one of those years. But I'll check for the chirping birds in a few minutes when I go out to shovel the five inches of snow we just got :)

*blinks* People are suing Aiken's bosses because they didn't know he's gay? Why is it any of their business?

February blues...er...grays

I like how Clive Barker addresses the problem of February in The Thief of Always:
"The great gray beast February had eaten Harvey Swick alive. Here he was, buried in the belly of that smothering month, wondering if he would ever find his way out through the cold coils that lay between here and Easter."

i got about half right on the My Little Pony test, but that's 'cause i just did the first half pony and the second half porn star.

[identity profile] arayuldaiel.livejournal.com 2006-03-03 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, the ponies had pre-set names? Seriously? I had no idea. I always named mine whatever random name I came up with, like 'Bluey' or 'Goldy'. I wonder why I never paid heed to the names on the TV show, though?

I'm thinking that the heart of the matter is they feel weird that they've had sexual fantasies about a guy who would never have sex with them. Because obviously, if he WASN'T gay, he'd seek out each of them and give her a night of the greatest pleasure she's ever known! Too bad that will never happen NOW, all because his bosses didn't say "OH BY THE WAY. HE LIKES GUYS."

[identity profile] lotusbiosm.livejournal.com 2006-03-03 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
you know, honestly, I don't find that it takes that much effort to be happy. I mean, sure there are days when you might think I'm depressed because I don't do anything, but I'm not unhappy. And I know that a lot of people do struggle, and I'm not saying that they're lazy or could just snap out of it if they wanted to, and I'm very glad there are medicines that can help them out of depression.
I'm not saying that it's not an act of will, I'm just saying that most days I'm happy and I didn't put any effort into it, because it's habit. The sun shines, and I'm happy. Someone mowed the lawn and the smell of freshly cut grass hits my nose and I'm happy. I see the little traces of spring in the smell of the moist earth and the flowers and I'm happy. I solve the Sudoku and I'm happy. I see a father playing with his kid on the Metro, and I'm happy. I think about how lucky I am to have parents and friends that love me and I'm super happy. And I read the paper everyday, so it's not like I'm isolated from all the reasons to be unhappy or anything. Being an optimist really does help, as the article says.
Re: Clay Aiken. A) it's none of your business, B) tabloid claims are not the same as him coming out of the closet. morons

Is this better or worse than the time I used the word "lulz"?

Would "rassafrassin'" be involved?

There will never be any forgiveness for the lulz.
