A bit sad today--our red pom Meko has developed diabetes, as previously reported, and was starting to get cataracts. We put her on insulin shots, and the cataracts mostly dissolved, which seemed like a small miracle. On Friday she was hopping up the stairs coming in from the front yard like usual; by Monday, she's suddenly got cataracts so thick that she can't even see the front door right in front of her, and "front" doesn't even look like a word to me anymore. She's gone almost completely blind, and it's the saddest thing ever to watch her creeping along the floor with her nose to the ground trying to smell where she's going, and bumping into the recliner anyway. She ends up going in circles and getting scared when she can't figure out where she is, and my stepfather started crying the other night. (She's technically my stepdog.) So we're talking to her a lot, so she can hear where we are, and carrying her outside when she wants to go, and generally trying to make her comfortable. She seems happy enough when she knows where she is, and not really lacking for energy, but she's gotten so thin that we can feel all her ribs when we pick her up, and all of these health problems have developed in the last six months--with such suddenness that they feel like a final decline. She might have weeks; she might have months. We don't know.

She seemed happy enough last night; she scratched at the couch (she was still able to jump up on it as of Thanksgiving) so I picked her up and she settled down on a Föm pillow and did her I'm So Happy My Eyes Go Squinty When I Smile thing while Mom and I watched King Kong on TCM. I had meant to just come down and to some laundry and get something to eat, but we ended up splitting a frozen pizza and watching the whole thing. I petted Meko and she curled up right under my face and she spent the whole movie going "Heh! Heh! Heh! Heh!," which was kind of appropriate, because... King Kong is kind of bad, y'all. I mean, I know it's kind of one of those sacred cows up there with Citizen Kane, but unlike Kane, which is still extremely rewatchable, I think Kong is best appreciated for the iconic nature of its imagery than the actual quality of, say, the effects or the acting. And I mean, I know--the effects were amazing for the time, and Brando and the like hadn't come along pioneering naturalistic acting yet. But we got to the part at about the half-hour mark when Jack turns to Ann, seemingly for no reason, and declares, sounding a good bit surprised himself, "Ann... I think I love you!," and Ann says, with great astonishment of her own, "Why, Jack! You hate women!," and Jack replies, "But Ann, you aren't women," and I turned to Mom and said, "Dude... this is kind of terrible." Suddenly, I understood why one might want to do a remake, and not just because of new technologies.

(That said, Fay Wray still rocks the house.)

Just for fun--it may stick around after the holidays, but the idea might burn itself out; who knows?--[livejournal.com profile] mlleelizabeth started up a comm that's something like [livejournal.com profile] sages_of_chaos crossed with a Harry Potter sorting community. Basically, only fictional characters can apply. (So no Dubya, no Hitler, no Russell Crowe.) It looks like it's going to have a very informal, improv-rpg, self-modded kind of atmosphere--just to have fun and be funny, although a certain elder Pevensie has been given leave as Head Girl to tell Mum if anyone misbehaves. (She may also show up here in the comments if I, uh, forget to change my log-in.)

Two from [livejournal.com profile] particle_person:

1. "Diane Duane is taking a reader poll to see whether there's a market to self-publish a book that won't get published any other way. The book is a sequel to her first two "cat wizard" books, which haven't sold well. (I personally recommend them to anyone who likes her Young Wizards series, which is set in the same universe.) Duane explains the whole thing on her blog, which shows where to indicate interest in the book."

2.  "Just saw this bit of gossip on the [livejournal.com profile] cranky_editors site: Stephen King may have pulled an Anne Rice; they say he now considers himself above editing." Oh, Stephen.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 pictures.

At [livejournal.com profile] trailer_spot: The Poseidon remake and The DaVinci Code.

Prince Caspian greenlit?

Golden Globes noms for movies and TV. I kind of want to give Crowe the boot and put Ralph Fiennes in there for The Constant Gardener (which got a Best Picture/Drama nomination! And he carries the entire movie on his back the whole time!), but other than that, I haven't noticed anything really outrageous about the nominations. Well, except that Walk the Line has been lumped into Musical/Comedy, thereby annihilating any chances Keira Knightley and Pride and Prejudice had. There is, you know, a different between "a musical" and "a movie about music."

And with that, I must away; I think the dogs need walking. Or carrying, as the case may be.

Happy Day Of Your Birth! Kinda sucks having it so near Christmas though. I always felt bad for the kids in school that had their birthdays in December. They'd always get those "this is for your birthday AND Christmas" gifts from cheap relatives.

I'm sorry about your dog though. I had to put one of mine down after her kidneys failed last fall. You don't think your as attached to them as you are.

My mom's birthday is on Boxing Day (Dec. 26th), so we've always had to make a huge deal over it, haha. She used to hate getting one present for both days.

ALthough to be fair in the latter case, I think maybe that time he got hit by the trucj/van/whatever while out walking did something to him. He seemed a little less...I dunno, janky maybe, before.

Happy Birthday Miss Cleo!

And I am glad your dog has such nice owners to care for her. Hopefully the cataracts will go away soon.

Origional King Kong is so weird. I watch some with my mom, and there was a "native" woman who was wearing a coconut bra. Umm ... yeahiawkward!

That bugged me too. But at least we'll get to see Keira all hotted up on the red carpet.

Happy birthday! Sorry about your puppy. When mine was dying of congestive heart failure she had these horrible coughing spells that were painful to hear, but as soon as they were over she was her usual, happy self. You've gotta love dogs.

One of our dogs went blind, and he learned what "left" and "right" and "slow" and stuff meant, so we could give him directions. Never fear, she'll get used to the blindness and be able to navigate again. *hugs* It's a really difficult thing to watch at first, I know.

And a Happy Birthday to you.

I hope you have a great birthday! (or had, what with time zones and all)

And that's sad about your dog, at least she's enjoying herself still.

I'm unbelievably excited about Prince Caspian...I wonder who's going to play young Caspian and then older Caspian for Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The technically don't have to make The Magician's Nephew or A Horse and His Boy until the end, since they don't require the same actors (well, Aslan, but Liam Neeson seems to be ageless).

Your comment on the bad dialogue in KK made me think of this awful 60s movie directed by Ed Wood called Plan 9 From Outer Space. It has deplorable dialogue and was voted the worst movie ever made. It's so amusing to watch though, and no one has to make fun of it because it somehow makes fun of itself without even meaning to.

I personally think they're going to have trouble making The Last Battle if it gets that far. Not only was that book more theological than the rest, but the kids are going to be WAY too old by that time. I mean Moseley is going to be 20 by the time Prince Caspian comes out. That being said, Caspian and Dawn Treader are possibly my favorites of the series. I'd also love to see A Horse And His Boy just because no one has tried to do that one yet and I was fond of Shasta.

And Plan 9 is a classic of ineptitude.

Sending good thoughts towards you and Meko! (will have my herd, including Jasper the icon dog, do the same).

Re: Diane Duane. She was one of the first people I met online, back in 1988, on the compuserve scifi forums. As it turned out, she was from my area originally, and, coincidence of coincidences, had lived in my apartment (it was one of 3 in a converted Victorian home) for a while! Every once in a while we drop each other a note.

She's actually shown up in the comments here a couple of times--really sweet, and I'm more than happy to help out any way that I can. I mean, God knows I've had enough trouble getting my book in the States (and haven't succeeded at that one yet), and I'm not even having to do POD.

Dang. I was hoping "Horse and His Boy" would be next.

Technically it's next chronologically.

However, it just makes sense to do Caspian next. Same 4 main characters and all.

Date: 2005-12-14 06:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Well, in the order Lewis originally wrote them, Caspian comes second (LWW is, of course, first). I know the publisher has rearranged them into "chronological" order, but the fact is, in terms of popular knowledge, people who read them before, say, 1990 (apparently) are more familiar with that order, and it's the first three or four they know best--particularly due to the BBC series that stopped after The Silver Chair. Which means that LWW, Caspian, Dawn Treader, and possibly The Silver Chair are the best known at this point, and in that order.
