I've got some linkspam in my email, but I'm too tired to actually collate it tonight. I did like this, though--Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels. I am deeply impressed that books as disparate as Neuromancer, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Blind Assassin, Lolita, Watchmen (yes, the Alan Moore graphic novel) and Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret made the list.

Speaking of books, my own arrived today--finally. True to my editor's word, it did turn out quite thick--maybe two inches? It looks purty, and not quite real. I also posted the Titanic icons at [livejournal.com profile] m15m; tomorrow will be the Star Wars icons, although I'll be working around class and Lost. I'm hearing that there'll be two weeks of repeats after tomorrow's, so I'm hoping I can catch up on recaps then. I've just given up on trying to promise them any sooner than that, anxieties being what they are right now. I've got some Lemon Zinger on the brew; I'm going to take that with me and have a long soak in the tub.

(Must remember to bake gingerbread for class tomorrow.)

Oh, and the new Lemony Snicket came out today! Crap, I have to get my hands on that. I can't even remember if I pre-ordered it off Amazon already or not.

*throws confetti* YAY FOR CLEO!!

The new Lemony came one?! Damn, I need to catch up with those. I read number four and then broke my bank account and couldn't justify paying for them all in hardback anymore. And of course, the neurotic inside won't let me try to find the paperbacks if I 1-4 in hardback.

i have all the way through ten but haven't read past the start of four because i can't make myself get into it. I didn't finish all of three and was so disappointed by the way the movie messed up the books that I can't get back into it.

Sweet - "Wide Sargasso Sea" made the list! God bless the high school English teacher who assigned that along with "Jane Eyre".

Praise for the Lemon Zinger. I drink pots of the stuff with lemon juice (redundant, isn't it?) and honey when I'm ill (like now). Today I drank eight cups... before lunch.

We love your writing, and we won't stop on Thursday or Friday or Saturday. Or even Sunday. I left you a comment on SF, btw-- I hope you feel better soon, although I guess the only thing that will really make a difference is publication.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmgingerbread.

Congratulations!

Lolita made the list? Damn, I'm impressed. Not that it's not a good book but how some prudes out there would even want to acknowledge a novel about a middle-aged dude getting it on with a 12 year old girl.

Ah so many great books are missing, inevitably.
I've read quite a few of those, which is neat. I think Handmaid's Tale should be there instead of Blind Assassin, or even Alias Grace.

Sorry I've been so awful about email lately. I am going mad up here and OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT SMELL? MY ROOMMATE'S FUCKING CAT IS ABOUT TO DIE!

Ahem, sorry. Yay, book!

Aww, don't worry about it. And you'd be proud--I managed not to freak out in the entry proper about the factual error on THE INSIDE FLAP OF THE BOOK COVER REGARDING THE PREMISE OF THE BOOK. Really, I'm totally okay about it.

Yeah, I saw that list. He's got some interesting picks on there. I give him big kudos for the two Graham Greene's but I had to seriously question The Corrections and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter which to me has always seemed like To Kill a Mocking Bird lite. Interesting though.

You know I'm totally waiting until its a book on tape. Are we having a release party where we just hit F5 on Amazon.co.uk to see how many copies were bought?

Is it in stores over there? because my brother is the UK as we speak.

Date: 2005-10-19 02:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Should be tomorrow--they might put it out today, but they're not supposed to.

Heh, release party. You weren't here for the weekend it first hit preorders and we sat around refreshing until it beat the Half-Blood Prince book-on-tape for #1. There was a lot of shouting from me about "THAT BASTARD DRAGON BOY BOOK!" as well.

Does knowing it's out there in bookstores make it seem more or less real? On one hand, I can see the release making an author feel like yeah, this is actually happening. It's there, people are seeing it, it's not just stuff in your head anymore.

On the other hand, I can also see why authors might feel MORE disconnected from a book once it's released. It's not something you're having to constantly think about anymore, it's done, and now you're just waiting to see how it does. In that period of time between release and the first reviews, I think it could feel like the thing just disappeared. Kind of a "if you stop imagining it, it ceases to exist" feeling.

In your case, it's even odder, because you have such a large audience talking about the book on a daily basis. Do you think getting feedback from someone who HASN'T seen this LJ will make it seem more real?

I just realized I'm pretty much interviewing you as this point. I will stop.

Hee! No, it's okay. This book happened in such a short period of time, even by publishing standards, that I think I'm still very much up in it. I only delivered the manuscript on May 30 or June 1, after all. And it's not like I spent years hawking the manuscript and being rejected and basically paying my dues, like so many writers do (and like I have with fiction projects that never got anywhere)--it just sort of happened out of the blue. It's still very fresh to me. Which may be why I can't really grasp the whole thing, actually.

I think it'll feel real for sure when I actually see it in a bookstore. But since I'm over here in the U.S., God knows when that'll happen.

Funny little story: my sister was sending her friends the link to the Amazon.uk pre-order page, and they were all like, "That's your sister? Huh. Weird." (Remember, they don't know me as Cleolinda.) Then she got to this one friend who started shrieking, "THAT'S YOUR SISTER? OMG I LOVE HER HARRY POTTER THING!" and, according to my sister, "started saying something about popsicle stands, but I don't know what that was about."

Also? I got a free ticket to Much Ado About Nothing at the Folger Theater today, and do you know how I got it?? My friend Anthony said, "So I saw you are a Heroine Addict, and I have these free tickets..." Because I have a Heroine Addict sticker on my laptop! HEE!
