MY BOTTLE OF HARVEST MOON CAME IN WHEEEE!

P.S. Midway smells like cake. Mmmcake.

[Poll #581233]
I had money on Mom being up and around by yesterday afternoon, so I lost that bet: she wasn't up and cooking until this morning. Literally, frying up a mess of bacon for breakfast and then making her homemade spaghetti sauce. Because she'd torn more than they'd thought, she's apparently going to be down longer than they thought, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it until Wednesday. I think she's going to drive me insane. I mean, Lord love my mother, and I do too, but: Why haven't I sold that polystone yet? Why aren't I cleaning? Have I finished my reading for school yet? Wasn't I supposed to be writing a paper, or did I already turn that in? My Social Security evaluation came in the mail ("Mom, don't worry about it. There isn't going to be a Social Security by the time I'm sixty"), and a bill for Vanity Fair. Is my subscription already up yet? Didn't I just pay it? Am I going to pay it again? Did I forget to pay the first one, is that what it is? What's in that box? What's in the other box I got yesterday? Why am I going upstairs so soon...?

I don't think I'm going to make it, you guys.

Linkspam:

Serenity guerilla marketing. Does not actually involve masked men kidnapping you off the street and forcing you into a theater, although it feels that way sometimes. (I kid! I kid!)

[livejournal.com profile] iremos:

I wanted to know if you were up for pimping/linkspamming a program I co-run, since you have several bajillion young writers who read your blog on a regular basis, and it's a good cause.

The Little Owl Mentoring Program (http://mentoring.absynthemuse.com) connects experienced adult writers with young writers ages 13-22 for free. Run by Hope Clark, editor of FundsforWriters.com, who runs the mentor side of things, and Elisabeth Wilhelm, editor of AbsyntheMuse.com, who reps the teen demographic, the program currently has over 85 mentors and 95 mentees on the list. We have international bilingual journalists published in international newspapers, magazine editors, award-winning sci-fi and fantasy writers, poets from Africa, professors and teachers as mentors. If Elisabeth doesn't have a mentor on the list to fit what you're looking for, she'll find the one for you. (We also currently have a great need for mentors, so please pass the message on!) The greatest part is that the entire program is not-for-profit and free.

Thanks. :)

Jon Stewart talks to the British about the Daily Show. It's funny to hear the writer describe Stewart, the show, and various elements in terms of British TV, mostly because I have no idea what he's talking about. "It's like Whosit and Whazzat, with a dash of Buh?"

From [livejournal.com profile] edda: Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, two tastes that taste great together:
Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are in talks to star in Touchstone Pictures' The Prestige, which will serve as Batman Begins helmer Christopher Nolan's next directorial outing, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Bale and Jackman will play rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London who battle each other for trade secrets. The rivalry is so intense that it turns them into murderers. The title refers to the residue left after a magician's successful trick.

The script is based on Christopher Priest's 1996 novel of the same name and was adapted by Nolan's brother, Jonathan. He wrote the short story on which Christopher's Nolan's breakout movie, Memento, was based on.

The Daily Show - a British equivalent would be somewhere between Have I Got News For You and The Fast Show

Those are like the best TV shows ever, so trust me, it's a good thing.

If you had a poll option for "I haven't bought anything yet, but I am omigodsotempted, and only the fact that I am a broke college student, the knowledge that I get addicted to thinks like this so easily, and the repeated mantra that I don't wear perfume so this would be a really pointless obsession to get into, have kept me from placing an order"

I was actually already on the verge of getting sucked into the cult, but I blame your mention of the infamous Dorian Gray review for the fact that I am currently making a list of possible first imps. :p

Also, the thought of Bale and Jackman in period clothing sends me to a rather happy place, I must say.

Well, you sucked me in, that's for sure. I ordered my first two bottles (Mantis and Szepazzony) yesterday, and I'm starting to think about swapping, since I have around 15 imps I could part with and about a billion other scents I want to try. Is the BPAL forum better for that, or would I do alright on the LJ communities?

Date: 2005-10-01 08:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
I've never used the forum swaps themselves; I haven't had a problem with the alchemylab comm, except for one decant of Snow White that was weird, and I can't tell if that's because it had been diluted, or just because the oil was old and had gone off a bit.

You know, I'm actually considering a swap entry--for people to post in the comments and list things they want or things they have. If nothing else, it would be a swap among a small group of people with fewer wingnuts hanging around (there have been some straaange people on some of these comms, including a couple of proven scammers), and BPAL newcomers might feel more comfortable here at first. You think?

(How is Szepassony, btw? I love the description, but I have problems with florals.)

I'm another who hasn't jumped on the BPAL bandwagon yet; I suspect, if I had any money at all, I'd give it a try. I loathe almost every commercial perfume I've smelled, so the prospect of a pretty-smelling alternative is a nice one.

And thanks for the Jon Stewart link; that was a really great article.

Right. SO I read all your reviews and I think, "gee, I don't wear perfume. I won't get sucked into all this." Riiiight. So now, yet another college student is sending more money than she should to BPAL for yummy smelling things. And thanks to your reviews (most of them, at least), I now have OPHELIA, DORIAN, THE DORMOUSE, DRAGON'S MILK, TINTAGEL, and GRANDMOTHER OF GHOSTS headed my way. Wheee!

Yay Jon Stewart! Before he was famous he did this routine in a bar that he practised with this band that my dad was in 'cause my faja plays bass, and he'd say this joke every night and my dad would laugh his ass off and then one night he says it again to this different audience and my dad laughs his ass off again and Jon goes "This is the FIFTH time I say it and HE'S STILL LAUGHING! WTF!" and then he laughed some more :P

Oy, sounds like you're having quite the time of it. As a fellow graduate student living at home with her parents long past the date that most people would be able to stand not being on their own, I totally hear ya.

Quoting Cleo's Mom: "What's in that box? What's in the other box I got yesterday?"

That is hilarious. My parents just recently discovered that I keep getting all these little padded bubble mailers in the mail, and I had to be more open than I was hoping to about my addiction. Questions that followed included: "Don't you think someone malicious could poison you/germify you/slip anthrax in your sample? Is this even a real company? Just how much money are you spending on this hobby?"

Like I said, Oy. Best wishes for hanging in there...

The only thing keeping me from totally dying of shame is hearing that more people than you'd suspect are doing the same thing. It seems to be some kind of economic trend, actually.
