I don't keep enough of my promises, but I'm going to try to keep this one: here's an entry not about hurricanes, New Orleans, or Katrina.

Saw The Constant Gardener yesterday. Excellent movie, but sad. It's really two stories: an international conspiracy/murder mystery, and a love story. If you're a fan of Ralph Fiennes or Rachel Weisz, you should definitely go see it. If you're still traumatized from the hurricane devastation, you should... totally go see The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Seriously, if you don't want to be depressed, you may want to skip this one. Of course, that's what my mother said going in, and she came out really liking it, so it's your call, really. But I recommend it in general.

Venus in Boston is taking twelve times forever to get here. Dear Amazon: I am supposed to have this book read week after next. Put a quickness on it plzkthnx.

Blew off cleaning to play with t-shirt ideas. I'm lumping it all together under "t-shirt ideas," but really I think the whole mug/sticker/mousepad/etc. route will be better in the long run--that way people can buy a larger variety of things for the same amount of money. Really, if I were buying things, I would go for several stickers. Oh, and someone mentioned possibly making Heroine Addict bracelets, which I thought was a good idea, except for the fact that collecting the money for those would be complicated. That's the thing I like about Cafe Press--it's all in one place and extremely easy to manage, which I value highly. Of course, you're talking to someone who maintained a juiced-up Geocities page with nothing but Page Builder for nearly three years; l33t, I ain't.

Oh, speaking of which, I finally remembered that someone had recommended The Font Thing as a font-managing program, and let me tell you, it has made my life soooo much easier. By TFT's calculations, I have 1400+ fonts, so... yeah. You try searching through all of them for just the right font for "Hey baby, you so fine, baby!" I'll probably mock up a few options for the first batch of quotes I think I'm using, and if I'm not sure on some of them, I'll get y'all's feedback.

(I just went downstairs to get a glass of milk and take Lucky outside one last time, and my mother was trying to wake my stepfather up so he would go to bed. He turns to her, still half-asleep in the recliner, and says, "Nnnngh... binary numbers show up and cause havoc in the system." My mother turns to me and says, "How does he even know what binary numbers are? What are binary numbers?")

Wouldn't that be 01 kinds of people? (My brain might be even more twisted than usual, but I thought binary read from the left.)

It does, but the "units" position is 20, which is one. That's right: in binary, 1 = 1.

*waves* Hi. :) I'm here through friends of friends (dove, probably?); don't mind me.

I was thinking about seeing The Constant Gardener, but is it very violent and/or super suspenseful? Because I don't deal well with that. Especially right now, as you mentioned. Then again, Ralph Fiennes. So, you know. Dilemma.

Here's the thing: the movie has a quasi-documentary look to it, and the acting/dialogue is really naturalistic, so you feel like you're watching real people, despite there being several very recognizable actors in the movie. (Apparently the director, Fernando Meirelles, also did City of God (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/combined), which has a similar look and "you have to hear about this" urgency.) So when bad things happen to these characters, even if you don't see that much on screen, you feel awful for them. That's why it's so emotionally draining, I think. That, and it has a relatively realistic ending. But Ralph is awesome, and I read some article where John le Carré said something like, "I couldn't put a cigarette paper between the character as he plays him and the character as I wrote him." So... yeah, dilemma.

oh pretty please, even though i'm still hoping for an "OMGWTFPOLARBEAR!" t-shirt-not-sticker, may we have "binary numbers show up and cause havoc in the system" in a nice, cubicle-approved mug or mousepad? that. is. beautiful.

I want a "OMGWTFPOLARBEAR!" t-shirt. And maybe on the back it can say OMGWTFBEES!

If I owned this t-shirt, I would wear it everywhere.

I went to download.com and typed in "free font manager," because I couldn't remember the name, and when I saw it--popular download, even!--I suddenly went, THAT'S THE ONE. So, short version... download.com. : )

Dude, my mom once answered me half-asleep in actual binary.

ME: Ma, it's late. You should go to bed.

MOM: 11101...

She trailed off before she finished the bit sequence so I'll never know what she was trying to tell me. It was really confusing at the time since I was dead tired myself, but now it's pretty funny.

I wanted to see The Constant Gardner but I'd rather not deal with more depressing stuff. Thanks for the heads up ^^

Heee! "Hey baby, you so fine, baby!" is among my favorite lines from King Arthur m15m. I can't even begin to imagine what the right font would look like for that.

I figure you already know this (and I'm probably being a pest with all my suggestions/input. Sorry!) but Cafe Press only sends you the money 4 times a year. So if you started now, you probably wouldn't receive the money until December/January or whenever their set date is. I can't remember if you're the one who suggested waiting until a lot of the fundraising dies down so this might not be an issue at all.

You could always stick someone else in charge of the bracelet-making operation.

What website makes those customized? I'd be interested in getting some of my own if they're decently priced...

Yeah, I will definitely buy a whole pile of stickers with M15M quotes on them if they become a reality. Definitely. And I will put them all over my stuff and make people ask what they're about. Hee.

Thanks for The Constant Gardener review. I've been debating it. It sadly lacks Gary Oldman as a cop or Christian Bale dressed as a large bat (God I STILL miss that movie) but looks fab nonetheless. (And by "fab" I mean "sad and artistic".)

I am now giggling at your stepdad's sleep-talking.

I hate you for seeing Constant Gardener. I want to go see it, but my dad loves John LeCarre, and forbids me to see it until I've read the book (not that I'm complaining, but it did look like a great, last gasp of summer fabulousness movie).

My sister has font issues. What is "The Font Thing"?

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Basically, it's a program where you can preview what a particular sentence might look like in one or all of your fonts, and you can sort them into collections of your choosing (say, "Favorites," "For Icons," "All Caps"--all kinds of possibilities). There are probably other features, but I haven't gotten to them yet.

From: [identity profile] cosmob.livejournal.com
Also, you can see the fonts in a chart of characters (handy for dingbat fonts) and you can see fonts that aren't actually installed on your computer (which is a great way to speed up program loading times-- if you only have a small number of fonts installed, you can still have fun with other fonts; just stick all your fonts in a folder and browse through them when you want something special; when you find the font you want, you can install the font from The Font Thing).

Hopefully that made sense.

*has about 800 fonts installed, but 3500-4000 on disk*

He turns to her, still half-asleep in the recliner, and says, "Nnnngh... binary numbers show up and cause havoc in the system."

When I was 15, my family went to Greece for vacation. Sometime on the long bus ride to Delphi, my mother dozed off and began to dream.

"It was the size of his cone," she moaned.

Some people on the bus looked up.

"It was the SIZE of his CONE," my mother insisted, rather more loudly. Our tour guide was fascinated.

It was at this point that my sister succeeded in waking her up, to the regret of the other passengers. We have never satisfactorily determined what this dream was about.

Despite my general lack of money, I personally would definitely buy a Heroine Addict bracelet (would this be in the "Lance Armstrong" style, or some other form?)

And I would totally go for multiple T-shirts with "Heroine Addict" and/or lines from your m15ms. I'd be glad to go through and look for good t-shirt lines if you want someone to brainstorm with. I'm just catching up on LJ after being gone for weeks, though, so maybe you already know what you want to do. Let me know! :)

P.S. In Interesting Katrina Fundraisers, GW law school came up with a nifty one - since a lot of us go to Au Bon Pain and Prima (sandwich shop) and other places for lunch, our student gov. set up a PB&J table in the lounge - and are asking us to donate for a sandwich instead of eating out. So far, it seems to be working! They're getting a lot of $$.
