So tired... but it's a good tired. Spent most of the week cleaning and running crap errands in preparation for class starting up again on Monday (I already have assigned reading, if you can believe it). Haven't updated this journal or [livejournal.com profile] dailydigestnews in a few days for that reason--been feeling a little under the weather and/or depressed as well, but as my mother points out, I always get anxious right before I start something new--particularly a new semester. So that's where I've been. And that was... well, that was kind of a bad tired.

So today the Lovely Emily and I ventured out into the swampy heat (ugh) to see The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which is a fabulous example of a romantic comedy not built around totally crap misunderstandings and trumped-up obstacles. Not just that, but if there's a movie with a funnier final scene, I don't know what it would be.

(I really want to watch Wet Hot American Summer again, too. I think it's the Paul Rudd factor.)

So then we hit Best Buy and picked up the Sin City DVD that I wanted (and got the Dame to Kill For comic free with purchase, yay!), ordered a pizza, browsed a bookstore (I am telling you: dinner, a movie, and a bookstore. This is our idea of a perfect date. Too bad we're only going out with... uh, each other at this point) and vegetated at Em's for a while. I'd turn on the DVD, but I'm just plain tired. The amount of cleaning I need tomorrow, in order to get some kind of housecleaning closure before school starts up again, is depressing. Oh, and I have reading to do. And the Sorceress keeps kicking my ass on Kingdom of Loathing because I waited too long fight her (level 19, ack). Woezzzzzzzzzzz...

It doesn't matter what level you are - the Sorceress will kick your arse according to your level. (I say this at level eleven and having her wail all over me, again and again. Seal Clubbers just don't work very well against the her *sigh*)

Ah - the joy and frustration that is Loathing *g*

See, that's what I'm saying--she's level 19 now too. The problem is that I'm still stuck with the same attacks/healing potions as you would be at level 11-15--she's way powerful, but my attacks are still lame. : (

Star-Throwing Stars work wonders for me. But I've used, like, 100 when I've tried to beat the sorceress. It sucks.

What about the red pixel potion? Doesn't it sap her power? Or it at least heals you. And if you have a really powerful ghost pickle or some such then it can attack for you, or some other familiar that doesn't get bamboozled by her spell-thingy that she puts on your familiar.

Date: 2005-08-21 10:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
The red pixel potion's basically a HP healer (blue does MP, and green does both). I'd love to get a ghost pickle, but the prices--ouch. I finally prevailed with a 25-pound lime.

My wonderful ex boyfriend bought me the completed familiar- two weeks before the recipe was implemented again, meaning it was fourteen million meat. I really do still love him.

Went to see 40 Year Old Virgin with my mom last night at the drive-in. Laughed so hard during that last bit I was crying and my mom asked me if I was okay.

Best. Ending. Ever.

So 40 Year Old Virgin is actually worth seeing? I'll admit that when I saw the previews I put that on my "You've GOTTA be kidding??" list for reasons of massive dumbness. What's it actually about?

Well, it's about a... 40-year-old action figure-collecting bicycle-riding virgin who works at a Radio Shack-type store, and once his coworkers (who previously thought he was just a weirdo and possibly "a serial killer") realize he's a virgin, they start trying to help him get laid. But he's so repressed and innocent that it's... well, an uphill battle. It's just really well-cast and well-written--Paul Rudd and Catherine Keener are worth the price of admission alone, really.

There is nothing wrong with action figure collecting.

There's nothing wrong with bicycle-riding, either. The action figures turn out to be a huge plot point (as does the bicycle), is why I mention them.

Okay, at least you can get to the Sorceress. I can't get out of the damn hedge maze and I'm just... stuck. I can never solve the stupid puzzle. DAMN IT!

It's annoying as hell--you just have to fight the hedge monster after every single move, basically.

Paul Rudd? You are wise. I remember getting all Grizzly Bear protective over him in the cinema during 200 CIGARETTES when he was caught in the vile talons of Coat-tail-riding drug-addled harpy Singer-Actress Courtney Love *g*...

Wirrrn!

They decided to make it voluntary--basically, after you defeat the Sorceress, you "ascend" and start over like a newbie. Only there's more content after you've ascended--you get zodiac signs, you can change your character class, there are new areas, etc. Just... fight the Sorceress as soon as you can. Because she's made to be exactly as powerful as you are, and I'm to the point where my attacks/healing potions aren't working on her.

I can't get through the freaking Hole in the Sky.

You're right about the movie. As I stated over on SF, I'm going to have to see it again. Between my laughter and the laughter of the audience, I missed about half of the dialogue. And I love the ending beyond all belief. Think it stands a good chance at a best comedy Golden Globe?

You're both forgetting that it's Comedy/Musical, and if a musical stands a good chance at getting into the top 5 at Oscar season, then it's probably going to win. (So there's "Rent" and "The Producers" to contend with) To say nothing of the category including any dramatic movie that's about musicians. And "Walk the Line" is getting some pretty strong buzz.

Jim and I got some new DVDs too, among them, Kung Fu Hustle and The 10th Kingdom. Turns out the latter is not exhausting to watch all in a row if you're doing something else while letting it play in the background. Also, Scott Cohen is sexy. I really wish the creator would be allowed to make a sequel, but apparently the world is full of stupid, stupid people who didn't appreciate this mini-series and didn't give it amazingly high ratings. Woe.

I really want to watch Wet Hot American Summer again, too. I think it's the Paul Rudd factor.

Not just that. Both The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Wet Hot American Summer were written by former members of the comedy troupe The State.

If I could, I would recommend every single second of The State's self-titled MTV series from the early nineties, because it was an extremely great sketch comedy show. Unfortunately, because MTV are a pack of dumbass punk bitches, only one short volume of The State's comedy was ever released to home video, and it's out of print now. Not that I'm bitter or anything.

Other alumni from The State now write and appear in Stella and Reno 911.

Just thought I'd drop in and... plug a series that hasn't been on TV for years. Carry on!

I also woke up the morning after seeing that movie with "The Age of Aquarius" in my head. It stayed there for the entire day. I was not pleased, but at least it kept me laughing.

I got so frustrated with the NS battle that I retired one of my multis. Too much depends on luck, but, everything else being equal, I find the furry suit a good choice (even if you're a moxie class), with a maxed out cocoabao, and flaming talons and the acid squirting flower.

I'd already ascended twice with different characters, but this last time was driving me bonkers. Feel free to in-game message me to discuss strategies.
