The Amazing McRachel only has a couple more days here in Birmingham before she leaves for the wilds of New York. Like, permanently. Moving there. Y'all in NY treat her right, okay?

*sniffle*

Wow, it's been a long time since I updated this journal. I did post a ton of updates at  [livejournal.com profile] dailydigestnews, however (go back a couple of days and you can even see a pic of Voldemort's wand), including several fall preview-type laundry lists and a general casting update that's more in the spirit of the old Digest. Whee!

In something of a Halloween mood lately. Probably because of reading all that Lovecraft. That, and my summer vacation started in early May. I'm not ready for summer to be over, exactly, but... maybe my seasonal clock's running a bit ahead.

(Hee: "I CTHULHU: or What’s A Tentacle-Faced Thing Like Me Doing In A Sunken City Like This (Latitude 47 ° 9’ S, Longitude 126 ° 43’ W)?" Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] riverchild.)

My cat has discovered The Littlest Mint and is trying to eat it. NO NO BAD CAT. The Littlest Mint, meanwhile, is looking kind of crispy. I water you (but not too often)! I give you sunlight (but not too much)! What more do you waaaant from meeeeee?

(Speaking of cats... Stuff on My Cat.)

BPAL: Can anyone advise on the Carnaval Noir blends? I'm trying to put my order in before the Lunacy LE comes out and blows the shipping time all to hell again. At this point I'm looking at Snake Charmer, House of Mirrors, Kunstkammer, Midway, Fire Eater, Freak Show, and Gypsy Queen; pure florals don't work well on me, but fruit/citrus/foody blends do. Anyone tried these yet?

Pure linkspam:

National Lampoon vs. Adult Swim. The winner: Adult Swim, by a mile!

Via Making Light: The Book of My Enemy Has Been Remaindered.

Not a link, but definitely a spam. Sender name in a spam email I got: Disapprovingly B. Surfboarded, which is awesome. I absolve you, Mr. Surfboarded!

EEEEEEE: Neil Gaiman and Stephen King and Lemony Snicket and lots of other authors are auctioning for charity the chance to get your name in a novel this September. You can bid on...

Lemony Snicket: "An utterance by Sunny Baudelaire in Book the Thirteenth. Pronunciation and/or spelling may be slightly 'mutilated.' An example of this is in The Grim Grotto when Sunny utters 'Bush[ch]eney.' Target publication date is Fall 2006."

Stephen King: "One (and only one) character name in a novel called CELL, which is now in work and which will appear in either 2006 or 2007. Buyer should be aware that CELL is a violent piece of work, which comes complete with zombies set in motion by bad cell phone signals that destroy the human brain. Like cheap whiskey, it's very nasty and extremely satisfying. Character can be male or female, but a buyer who wants to die must in this case be female. In any case, I'll require physical description of auction winner, including any nickname (can be made up, I don't give a rip)."

Back to Neil: "...while I am promising to put your name onto a gravestone in my next children's novel, THE GRAVEYARD BOOK."

If my name were in a Snicket book, I would die. I shudder to think how much some of these will go for, however. Bidding starts in September as follows:
September 1-10: Michael Chabon, Amy Tan, Peter Straub, Andrew Sean Greer, Karen Joy Fowler

September 8-18: Stephen King, Lemony Snicket, Dorothy Allison, Jonathan Lethem, Ayelet Waldman

September 15-25: John Grisham, Nora Roberts, Neil Gaiman, Dave Eggers, Rick Moody, ZZ Packer

A song named "Cleolinda." I bought a download and it's nice--sort of a wistful acoustic guitar instrumental. I think the date on the song is 2002, and I was using the name Cleolinda online (a couple of years?) before that, but I don't think I "inspired" this in any way. I only mention it because someone actually left me the link in a comment (I've lost the name of who it was, dammit) and asked if I was "the same Cleolinda." Also because I've met only one or two people who even knew who the mythical Cleolinda was; if you know the name, it tends to be attached to me. But if you would like to whistle a few bars of "You're So Vain" at me, go ahead. ; )

One of my friends grows chocolate mint. It's a fabulous plant because the leaves taste like Andes.

We had a bush of that stuff next to my house when I was growing up! It's wonderful stuff.

I had chocolate mint in a garden way back when I was married. The ex wanted herbs and whatnot. It's an OK plant, but not *that* interesting. I always thought the yarrow was the best, attractive and exotic.

I'm not one of nature's gardeners, to it has to be damned hearty, like able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, or at most two or three bounds, for me to grow it.

I've tried Midway & Freak Show & I loved Freak Show. Really figgy with a bit of smoke or tobacco or something in the background. Kinda rich & yummy. Midway is totally caramel apple on me. Heating the caramel & making them yourself in your kitchen. Then, comes the cotton candy. It's very sweet & yummy. I think you might like that one best, but Freak Show is a winner, too.

I've also tried BoN, Fire Eater, Geek & Torture King. I don't think you'd like any of those. They're all too weird.

Heh. I'm considering Fire Eater but I'm not sure. House of Mirrors is the one I'm really thinking about cutting, though.

Kunstkammer was almost pure berry on me. Gypsy Queen, sort of incense-y with a berry/floral overlay. Midway was pure butter and powdered sugar.

Haven't tried any others yet, although the CnS for my Medicine Show/Snake Charmer/Torture King should be coming any day now...

Have you heard about the mixup with HOM and SC? Apparently several bottles went out with the labels switched, so... check your Snake Charmer. Apparently House of Mirrors is more citrus/amber/"perfume." If it doesn't smell anything like Snake Oil, or at least a little vanilla, you may want to look into a lab swap or refund.

I heard about that, yes! Actually I am guessing that clearing that up is at least part of why that order hasn't shipped yet.

The worst part (as far as I'm concerned) was how bad it messed the review threads for those two oils up.

(Hmm. Have you tried any of the Tarot oils? I'm thinking about trying The Magician...)

I haven't tried any Tarot oils... all of the ones I've read reviews on, people seem to have wildly differing perceptions of them, which makes me leery... if [livejournal.com profile] kebechet ever rolls out a Queen of Swords, though, I'll be buying it no matter what. That's my card. I have it tattooed (the Hanson-Roberts version) on the side of my neck.

The first Tarot oil I tried was The Moon, and I fell madly, passionately in love. It helps that I love jasmine though. So far none of the others I have tried I have liked, but I haven't tried too many of them yet.

I have managed to collect all but two of them so far, so that will probably be the next set I start trying out. I have the Magician, but I haven't tried it. Perhaps I will move that higher up in my list of things to try (like I really have a list instead of an overflowing basket)

I've tried all of the Carnavale Noir blends except Kunstkammer, Bed of Nail and Torture King. I highly recommend Snake Charmer! It's vanillay, ambery goodness! I love Geek but it's very patchouli, cinnamon, and pine, so it's only good if you like that sort of thing. Freak Show is wonderful, the chocolate blends with the fig and it's very complex and foody and yet not really foody. I also really like Medicine Show, which is tobacco and ginger and rosewood, and is a lovely, light spicy blend, but on me at least it fades very quickly. I am still on the fence about both Bearded Lady, vanilla and florals are lovely, but I am not a huge floral fan, and Gypsy Queen, which is incense and citrus and floral. On me the neroli and bergamont become VERY SWEET and I am not sure why that's happing.

I personally didn't care for House of Mirrors (ozone and citrus, very perfumy) or Fire Eater (kind of soapy). Midway is really fun, but on me it turns to play-doh, so I can't really comment.

I hope that helped!

Hmm. I think I may cut Fire Eater after all, then. I love vanilla, but not so much with the florals, so now I don't know about Bearded Lady, either...

I did! I was going to PM you but forgot--after reading the reviews, I'm pretty sure I'm going to like SC, so let someone else have the sample. I'm trying not to be She Who Buys Up All the Pretty Smells. : )

Aww, that's nice of you. :) I was a teensy bit disappointed with SC--it was nice, but I was hoping for a little more complexity or something. I'm going to try it again next week and see if it reacts with my skin chemistry any differently then.

Yeah, this has nothing to do with anything up there, but on cnn.com, there's a review up for "Four Brothers" and it says:

Rounding out the pack is Hedlund in the role of Jack. He made his feature film debut in "Troy," opposite Brad Pitt.

And I thought, "'In conclusion: cousin.' Hee!"

That is all.
