May. 25th, 2005 01:38 pmNo recap tonight. There will be a discussion entry. Down with some kind of stomach flu/food poisoning--mild, and I'm soldiering on through it, basically. Still working; cannot answer questions or comments.
I wasn't going to post at all, but I just saw on the news that Ismail Merchant has died. I knew I was a Merchant Ivory fangirl (Vladimir even got me James Ivory's autograph at one of his many film festivals), but I didn't realize I was going to be this upset about it. Howards End was actually my sick-day movie in high school--every time I was home with the flu or something, I'd watch that. It's one of the few movies I think I've ever seen that largely improves on what is already a great book. (Remains of the Day is at least as good, if not even better, perhaps, but it's so damn sad. Which means I only watched it about fifty-three times.) "Only connect" was my senior yearbook quote. My mother thought that was dumb at at the time ("It's so short! What does it even mean?"), but in the years since she's turned to me every now and then and said, "You know, it's like your yearbook quote--if only people could connect! It's so true." So... I mean... I don't know. It's sad, and I feel like I had to share it.

Date: 2005-05-25 06:49 pm (UTC)I hear you on that. That scene in the rain at the very end...that's my all-time favorite stab-me-in-the-gut romantic movie moment.
Get well/be unpoisoned soon!

Date: 2005-05-25 07:00 pm (UTC)The death of someone you admire can be surprisingly hard, but people often feel guilty about grieving for someone they've never met. You shouldn't, by the way. It's still very sad.
Rock on.

Date: 2005-05-25 07:34 pm (UTC)And the Remains movie is good, but it cannot be better than the book because of one incomprehensible scene where Stevens does the exact opposite of what he does in the book, and then that stupid symbolic pigeon thing at the end. But the book is my default favorite.

Date: 2005-05-25 07:46 pm (UTC)It's sad when someone you admire dies, because it reminds you that memories, things you associate with that celebrity are gone, in some way.

Date: 2005-05-25 08:59 pm (UTC)I think we know people who write with their souls and those that are actors/actresses who use their inner experiences to create a character we can relate to, better than we realise. They open their feelings to us in a way others in our life are usually afraid, or unable to do. We then feel common bonds with them and they die we feel are lost a tie to someone who does understand what we feel.
I felt like I had been hit by a cement truck when Natalie Wood died. She was my "rainy day movie actress."
Hope by this time tomorrow or sooner you are feeling better!
Hugs, Christina

Date: 2005-05-25 10:35 pm (UTC)Hey, I had this dream about the Roman Emperor Caligula a little while back, and I dreamt it in movie form, and I totally think it would be a movie you'd do one of your M15Ms. And, it's highly amusing, so I'll post it, maybe it'll give you a laugh. :)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Today I woke up after having a weird dream about Caligula, teh Roman Emperor of Perverseness. Okay, it was like a movie. It started out with Senator Jason Isaacs bitching about this dude who's always late and stuff and then in walks in Caligula Joaquin Pheonix!!! He sits down in his chair thing and smiles out at the Senators of all the hot movie stars.
Senator David Thewlis and Senator Viggo Mortenson look at each other.
Senator Jason Isaacs: "Who do you think you are to delay the Senate?"
Caligula Joaquin Pheonix with total Gladiator charm: "Caligula."
Then BAM! Caligula Joaquin Pheonix comes into his room and Senator Alan Alda (I KNOW WTF, RIGHT???) is on his bed reading a book. He points to a page and Caligula Joaquin Pheonix goes CRAZY about the book having been burnt and he tries to get it away from Senator Alan Alda, and injures Senator Alan Alda's back in the process. He falls to the floor and Caligula Joaquin Pheonix kicks him and beats him. The maids in the background run away, as one does.
Then Caligula Joaquin Pheonix is on the street. He grabs a torch, pushes it at a guard, says, "Thanks for your service as a matchstick," and lights the guard on fire, and continues lighting peasants on fire.
I wake up and go 0.o. Does anyone know if there's a Caligula movie like that...at all? Or am I just on too many meds???
