So. The latest entry on the Literature of Antebellum Reform reading list is Ten Nights in a Bar-Room And What I Saw There (1851), and it's gone from sort of quaintly engaging to balls-out melodrama in a matter of chapters. My favorite chapter is "The Seventh Night," in which debauched young gambler Willy Hammond is stabbed to death by swindler Harvey Green, Hammond's mother spontaneously falls dead over her son's body, Green is lynched and shot in the ensuing melee, the tavern-keeper loses an eye, the corrupt judge who helped swindle Hammond gets his face stomped into oblivion, and the tavern-keeper's wife goes insane and is put in an asylum. All because of the Demon Rum! Hosanna!

(My second favorite part is when the narrator describes how the once-shiny and respectable new tavern is on the downward spiral. You can tell it's now a den of iniquity because the linen is rank, the dishes are dirty, and THE HIRED HELP IS IRISH! MY GOD!)

I am pretty sure that the author was not hoping that my reaction would be, "Man... it sucks that the Mill is closing, because I could really use a Long Island right about now."

And the icons--Katharine Hepburn and Frances Farmer. Trivia note: Farmer is, you might, say, the Face of Digest. In fact, the icon below is made from her mugshot, and I hope that if I ever get arrested, I look this good:

Heee! I actually had some dork from the EZBoard matchmaker service (I checked "friends only," dammit!) persist in asking me how I got my skin so purple. Like, in real life.

Yeah, no--I totally don't look that good. I didn't even know it was Frances Farmer until I did a little research into the original image because I wanted to make more graphics, but... yeah. Totally not me. I wouldn't plaster my face all over a movie site anyway. I bet you're not the only person who thought that, though. ;)

1. I am a friend of princessm516, and a fellow Fametracker (you're from FT, no?)

2. Ohmigawd, I love that Frances Farmer icon and must have it. We crazy Seattle girls need to stick together.

Yay! Take, take! I'm actually going to take my Digest logo icons (which are of Frances) and see if I can't do something with them here. And when the email comment-alert rolled in, my first thought was, "Hey, is that rexmanning on FT?" So yeah. I haven't been there in a while, though... stupid grad school.

Oh, actually I'm "Page" on FT, which has nothing to do with anything, but I was planning on changing my nom de Fametracker to my LJ name if they ever update the software and blah blah blah.

I haven't been too into the 'track lately either, it's getting awfully snipey, no?

Actually, it was really snipey about... (counting)... four months ago when I was last there? It wasn't a conscious decision on my part (I mostly just got busy), but people were getting sort of strident and starting up race/religion/weight/ad hominem wank whenever possible, it seemed. Maybe it was an influx of new people, I don't know. There were several trolls, too. And then the LOTR thread yelled at me for posting a "spoiler," and I was like, Okay! (It was that whole "Saruman has been cut from ROTK" bit.) So I left for a little while so to let the Evil Spoiler Girl thing cool off. And now I'm so far behind in reading posts that I don't know if I'll ever be able to catch up...

You'll be interested in "The Aviator" sometime around Christmas, then. Cate Blanchett's playing Katharine Hepburn--not the greatest likeness, but she rocks, so we'll see.
