Horoscope of DOOM:

Quickie: A problem can be like a splinter in your foot unless you do something about it.

Overview: For the next couple of days, absolutely nothing will be more important to you than taking care of the ones you love -- and that might well pertain to one person in particular.

It's a little-known fact that you are an expert caretaker. It's not just because you can make anyone laugh at any time -- although laughter, after all, really is the best medicine. You're also quite intuitive and know immediately what your charge needs, oftentimes before they do. So when a dear one comes to you, obviously worn out and in need of a helping hand, you'll be more than happy to do whatever you can to help.

Weird.

Dear Braveheart: Please magically split into more chapters. This movie is seventeen hours long, and it's got twenty-one chapter stops. I'm about to wear out my "search" buttons looking for basic scenes. What. Ever.

That said, it's coming along really, really well. I am a little worried about making fun of the prince's flaming effeminacy so much--it's one of those things where you've got to show that you're making fun of the movie portraying him that way, you know? Anyway.

Nothing terribly important, just some linkspam I need to clear out:

A new update on Gaiman!Beowulf from Neil's journal.

A new Harry Potter poster. Dear marketing department: I can do better than this, kthnx. (ETA: I should have been more clear. This "poster" was scanned in from a kids' magazine. It is not a theatrical poster. Because that would just be sad. Even so? I can STILL come up with something better than this.)

More pics from A History of Violence.

The Ring 2 gallery at OutNow. Warning: spoilers and giant pictures of Samara glaring at you.

Mmm, breakfast.

This is a truly awful picture of Rupert. And, uhm, does the poster actually SAY anything? (Yes, I know, posters don't speak.) What I mean is, this one is entirely devoid of content.

Uh...they're not even trying, are they? It reminds me of how the TWoP posters are making better VM ads than UPN is.

Wow, UPN's really having trouble promoting their shows, aren't they. They were never promoting Enterprise, either, and now that it's been cancelled, they're all like, "Oh, look, we got one of our highest rated shows cancelled! Come watch!"

Those horoscopes lie :P

A higher-up you've admired and respected for some time is about to let you know that the feelings are mutual -- and what could be better than having the respect of your mentor? Sure does make you feel good just to be you, right? Keep in mind, though, that if you hadn't earned this, it wouldn't be coming your way. Isn't a celebration in order? Once you get your heels back on the ground, that is.

Celebration? More like needing a secret stash of comfort food >.

Samara looks like a dorky version of what she was in the first Ring. Shame. I'm still going to go see it, because I'm a slave to the horror genre. But I don't know that I'm looking as forward to it as everyone else.

As for the HP poster, I think Daniel and Rupert could've had better pictures. Maybe there will be a nicer poster later that actually has a background. As someone else said, Emma looks great. But doesn't she always. I'd roll my eyes, but it's too early in the morning.

The Harry Potter poster is basically saying 'We could put a shit taco on this poster and kids will still line up around the block for the movie.'

BTW, have you seen the Sin City article in Premiere? Seems like everyone in the cast was majorly geeking out over the project, especially Elijah: 'It was too much, man. My little geek mind could not contain it.' Awww, cute. :)

Hey,

Dude, what happened to Samara's face? She's gone from looking creepy to looking constipated!

I really like both the Japanese *and* US versions of THE RING. Sadako, in the Japanese one, is a creepier entity than Samara, but the video itself and the final attack are creepier in the US one. I didn't care for the Japanese RING 2, which featured the hokiest pseudo-experiments this side of MISFITS OF SCIENCE, so the US remake could be something special, so long as Samara gets some fibre in her diet *g*.

play a homophobic murder for laughs

My problem is that I'm having to play the whole movie for laughs. How do you make fun of something that's played as funny but shouldn't have been? You end up with (pulls up draft) clumsy crap like this, is what happens:

[Many scholars will tell you that relationships between men were not stigmatized in the past the way that they are today. In fact, Renaissance playwright Christopher Marlowe’s play Edward the Second makes clear the idea that the nobles resented Edward II’s relationship with a male favorite not because it was “homosexual,” but because Edward lavished land and titles on the favorite—a commoner—that the nobles believed should have been theirs. In short, this film’s portrayal of royal homophobia is not just incorrect; it’s anachronistic.]

(The [un?]fortunate side effect of all this is that I end up watching all these movies 42 times, and by the end of it, I'm always like, "Wow, that movie is so much better than I ever gave it credit for!" Which is an eye-opener when it's Titanic. It's just scary when it's Independence Day.)

I heard about that a while ago and was immediately worried, but what they're saying about expanding the conventions of theatre to fit the story rather than restricting the story to the stage sounds to me like a step in the right direction.
