Horoscope of Irony and/or DOOM: Ready to have 'em laughing in the aisles again and to rejuvenate your reputation as a party animal? Well, if you're not, someone else will be only too happy to do it for you -- someone who's seen you in action, entertaining the entire room with just one ridiculous facial expression. Oh, stop acting like it's an inconvenience. You know you want to come out and play.

I don't know where my horoscope gets this "party animal" thing from, but... sigh.

How fandom is like the mob: both hilarious and true.

The Littlest Drug Addict!

Two helpful communities y'all should know about: [livejournal.com profile] little_details and [livejournal.com profile] picture_request. They are NOT substitutes for your own googling and research, but they're great to have on your friends list in case you ever need anything desperately random, or if you in turn can help someone out. (It turned out that someone was looking for Hispanic nicknames the same day I was asking y'all about nicknames for Mercedes. See?) So take a look at those.

SO MUCH SIN CITY OMG.

The new Star Wars poster.

Keanu Reeves as... Sinbad? Aw, hell. He's pretty and they know it. I'm totally going to end up seeing this.

Naomi Watts gets her Fay on in Kong's giant mitts.

Marie Antoinette starts filming: "Other members of the ensemble, portraying various members of the elitist court of Versailles include Rip Torn (in the role of King Louis XV), Judy Davis (as the Comtesse de Noailles), Steve Coogan (as Mercy), Asia Argento (playing the Comtesse du Barry), Marianne Faithful (Maria-Teresa), Aurore Clement (Duchesse de Chartres), Molly Shannon (Aunt Victoire) and Shirley Henderson (Aunt Sophie)." Uh, you guys...? Maybe this is a comedy.

Important question: Sister Girl's computer seems to have come down with a virus that won't let her open any of the folders on her hard drive. Naturally, this makes it difficult to debug her computer. Anyone know anything about this?

Every time I see the name "Sinbad" I twitch, because for the first I don't know how many years of my life I saw it spelled Simbad (correctly or not, I don't know, but that's what I remember), so that just bugs me every time I see it. (Even though I dearly love the animated Sinbad).

Don't know anything about the virus in particular, but a good way to start is, assuming she's running Windows, to re-boot the computer in safe mode. Just press F8 a lot as soon as the power comes on until the boot menu pops up and it asks you if you want regular or safe mode. Once you're in safe mode, you won't be able to go online, but she should be able to run any anti-virus software she has or do a manual search-and-destroy. Also, when running safe mode the resolution and colors will be low, but that's normal. It's cause windows is loading the minimum number of things it needs to get a useable interface going, so a lot of pretty is sacrificed.

You can also try PandaScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/). It's a free, online virus checker, so as long as she can access the 'net, she should be able to run it.

HA! Pirate!Keanu is gonna be the funniest damn thing EVER. And we both know I'll go and see it when it comes out ;) (Hell, I scoffed at his role as an exorcist at first too, and now look at me. How sad.)

Did you ever see the Entertainment Weekly with the Sin City coverage? It was actually fairly spectacular- the movie will be a classic. A very odd, psychotic cult classic.

I'm having that problem with my computer too, but I can debug it sometimes (it always changes). If I try to open "My Music", it will work, but it I try to open "My Computer" next, it will either not work at all, or let me debug it. Quite annoying really.

I love the Star Wars poster. I'm a little torn however about the drawing of Ewan, his most visible picture. For one thing, it's very Obi-Wan like, in the Alec Guiness sense, and that's probably what they're aiming for. On the other hand, Ewan looks like an old man, and that's not a prospect I want to consider just yet. (However, I'm sure he'll age quite gracefully)

Here's to hoping to be in line opening show of Episode three!

cheers

My computer has a bit of a bug problem, or something as well. Namely that it'll randomly restart whenever I'm in the middle of typing something, whether that be an e-mail, an lj post, or a word perfect document. I've yet to figure out what makes it do that, but I still keep cleaning it up often with adaware and AVG (does your sister have those?) they're the best free anti-virus whatchamawhosits I've found. Adaware is especially useful I think. If she can't d/l those however, make sure she doesn't have anything she wants on her computer (unlikely) then wipe it, and reboot with a windows whatever disk. Worked for me a couple of times. However, there's that whole catch of those files you'd die upon losing...so yeah...

cheers

Yeah, I'd have to have a friend of mine, who happened to be the one to install the new motherboard and what-elsehaveyou, look at mine. Unfortunately he's 4 hours drive away, which is a bit of an inconvenience. But he's great tech support whenever I visit. I however, am at odds with my computer. We get by as intimate acquaintances, I would never invite it to dinner or anything. It is so testy.
But I should probably feel sorry for it, as it has, you know, a semi-debilitating disease. Unforunately that disease effects me as much as my pc...

cheers

Indeed. My friend Joseph had the same problem as I, and his was a corrupted motherboard; I, however, fear that it may have to do with the fact that I spilled ginger ale on the keyboard.

Date: 2005-03-11 05:51 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] megmatthews20.livejournal.com
that can always be a problem...I've nick-named my computer fritz. And while I've spilled nothing on the keyboard (well, this keyboard anyway) it is in fact often the keyboard that does the weirdest things. It'll begin to randomly open and change around files, while the lights on the keyboard blink as though they're seizing or something. Then when it's come this close to deleting every file of importance, it'll usually randomly restart. Although, it doesn't always go on the fritz before restarting, just sometimes. Usually though it's just a split second where I can no longer do anything, and then restart...there goes e-mail, lj post, etc...
it becomes less annoying once one has it happen a gazillion times, unless one is already having a bad day...but yeah...
maybe spilling something on the keyboard would cause it to be good for awhile! :-p

cheers

Do you read The Straight Dope (http://www.straightdope.com)? Cecil Adams is the perfect combination of smart and snarky. Also, it has searchable archives for when you need something specific. The "threadspotting" feature can make you laugh so hard that your roommate looks up and comments, "Dude, I think you have a bloody nose." And then you look down and there is a big red dot on the back of your wrist and OMG there's another one and does anybody have a kleenex and will you please stop laughing at me and get me some toilet paper?

Noooo. It'll ruin my childhood images on the Sinbad TV series (that looked surprisingly like it was shot in the same sets as Xena and Hercules) by trying to make Keanu look manly. Which he doesn't.

The more I hear about Marie Antoinette, the more I worry.

I took a peek at the little_details community, and the one question I could help answer was the grossest one. Who knew being a vet tech would make me a bottomless pit of really yucky information?

Ooooh, Star Wars poster. Am looking forward to it even though it'll be ripped apart by critics, and I'll end up mocking it after I've seen it and am no longer impacted by the pretty.

(This is what happened with the last one. When I first saw it, I thought it was beautiful but then after a month or so I was all, "Oh my shit, it's awful!1!

Okay. (:
Ofra Haza (She was more traditional, the funked up dance stuff seemed to end up on compilations--her cover of 'Open Your Heart' on the Madonna tribute, or the stuff on the 'Just Say Yes' albums.)
Natacha Atlas--I recommend starting with Gedida, Diaspora or Ayeshteni
Transglobal Underground--starting with International Times, or Psychic Karaoke
Banco de Gaia--star

Oh hell. Just check out my belly dancing mixes at http://www.nog.net/~cyrano/cd/belly.html
