I'm drowning in new music right now--y'all know me and my obsessiveness; it could take me weeks to get through all these tracks, because I'll get stuck on one for hours, if not days, at a time. So thanks to everyone for all the music--I'm getting swept away as fast as I can. : )

Since I mentioned "Wuthering Heights," I thought I'd give you the two versions to compare. I used to have the "old" Kate Bush version (computer crash, woe), which is kind of scary-old-witch sounding, but I do have and adore the "new vocal" version. The Pat Benatar cover uses more guitar and her phrasing is pleasantly different, but it sounds a lot more like the Bush version than you'd think (it's not "Wuthering Heights Is a Battlefield," if that's what you're worried about). Both these versions are great, in my opinion. (ETA: Thanks for the old version, [livejournal.com profile] lady_elina!)

Bonus song: Hélène Ségara, "Un voix dans la nuit" ("A Voice in the Night"), which may or may not be an actual cover of Donna Summer's "On the Radio" but definitely references it, if nothing else, in a slower, driving-at-night-under-the-neon-lights, pop ballad kind of way. (Lyrics, in French, here.)

If you're in the market for new music, you could check out a friend of mine: Michelle Cross (http://www.michellecross.com). Her debut EP is available for download, free of charge, and she has 3 or 4 full length songs from her full-length album that are free as well.

Hooray! Thanks for the easy access! I'm lovin' the new version, so much more... pleasing. If you're up for music suggestions, I strongly recommend Beulah's upbeat stuff. "Sunday Under Glass" and "If We Can Land a Man on the Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart" in particular. Enjoy!

I wonder why, when I took the Literary Criticism class that focused solely on this god-forsaken book, I hadn't heard of this. Seriously, it would have made reading the cracked-out because Marxism didn't EXIST at the time of WH's publishing Marxist theory interpretation of the story a LOT less sleep-inducing more bearable.

And here is (http://s30.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2MFCVO39302X51AHWSXE0KESXT) another version of Wuthering Heights by the very young and extremely talented Kiwi singer, Hayley Westenra. I have most of the rest of her album, Pure, and she's got a gorgeous voice.

I've never heard the Kate Bush original, so thanks for the dl! :D

Kate Bush's newer vocal rendition of "Wuthering Heights" is amazing. The original was horrifyingly screechy, but she was what, 14 when she recorded it???

Another track by her that I love is "Running Up That Hill" ... the second verse is brutal, it's one of my favorite songs ever.

Wow thanks so much for all the great links...I have a great love for the original KB version given the time and place I was when it came out, but am happy to have her "new' vocal version. And Pat Benatar is terrific--I hadn't heard that one. AND Helen Westenra.. it is really a vocal showcase, isn't it?

Love the French song as well, makes me dream I'm on vacation in France...

Kate Bush sounds like Glenda of Wizard of Oz. "Are you a good Heathcliff...or a bad one?" I far prefer Benatar's version. I've loved it since High School. <3

Speaking of Wuthering Heights, do you like the old classical movie with Sir Lawrence Olivier or the made-for-tv movie with Ralph Fiennes and Juliet Binoche?

Date: 2005-03-07 04:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
I like the Olivier version, but I have to confess that the Ralph Fiennes version was the first movie I ever saw him in--damn, that was 12 years ago! I came for Juliette (I had seen Blue a little before that) and I stayed for Ralph. So I have a deep, deep affection for that version. And for the score, which is gorgeous--and that reminds me, I used to have the Ryuichi Sakamoto track they ran over the credits, but I lost it in the crash. I have to find that again...

(And if you go looking for it on your own, the English cast is decent, but not really quite as good. Tina Arena and Celine Dion are on the English cast album, and I've never been able to find the Las Vegas full cast album.)
