Quick note for FT refugees while I'm working: if you want to go save your favorite threads, hit "print this topic" (it's in the line of tiny cream-colored print, right after "track this topic" and "email this topic"). You'll get a nicely-formatted text-only version of the entire thread on one web page that you can save. I think the forums are going down on March 15, so you might want to hop to archiving anything you want to save.

Edited to clarify: yes, the FT forums are going to the Big Message Boards in the sky on March 15. Fametracker.com itself will remain, however. And yeah, Wing and Glark have said several times on these threads that there's pretty much nothing that can be done--subscription memberships would be "nightmarish to adminstrate" and also, that's what the Outrageously Overpriced Donation Things (OODTs) were supposed to serve as, and hardly anyone bought them.

Also, hey!

Thanks for the tip - I loved the GWB thread, and been trying to find a good way to save it.

Well, that might have been easier than saving every individual page of the "Queer Cinema" thread. But thanks for the heads up. ^^

OH! Britney Spears!!!

Sonovabitch. Who's going to give me the best red neck snark on the net?

Hey Cleo - I was also wondering, is there any chance you could recruit someone to make Fametracker icons? (Or anyone reading this, would you like to make some "We Miss You Fametracker" icons, or something else that might sound better?) I asked over at my journal but you have so many way more readers than me.

You know how many freakin' threads that would be?? =/

Still, thanks for the tip. :)

Is that... you, in your icon? Because, if I may say so, that is a vision.

Heh. I had the same reaction, but it's not her. It's a stock photo a friend gave her.

I know that's not you in your icon. Hee.

Bwahahahahahaha!!! Out of the twenty-plus times somebody's inquired after my pic, that's the first time that somebody else has known the answer, and volunteered it! (And you answered so completely! Kudos to you!) :D

Good idea!

I just found out about the closing a few minutes ago. I am crushed beyond all belief! I need my Gerry and POTO threads!

Noooooooooo. Not FT! I didn't know about this until I read your post because I've been away from the computer for the day and I was all "no. NO. SHE'S MAKING IT UP!!!!"

(We mixtape club people are trying to figure out where to move to/how we can keep going.)

It is very sad.

You might want to start up an LJ comm--[livejournal.com profile] audiography does a brisk trade in mp3s via yousendit.com.

The reason I would advocate LJ comms over message boards--which are also good in different ways--is that you can restrict LJ comm membership to invitees only and make the entries members-only. If you're going to trade music within a dedicated group, you might seriously consider LJ. I don't know how you're doing the mixtapes, but using a comm might make it even easier to trade music, because I can't imagine Wing's been letting y'all link to downloads.

If you want to start another messageboard, there's a free website.
xsorbit.com or something.

First Hissyfit died out, and now FameTracker. If they ever take away my TWOP boards, I'll truly go insane.

In recent years FT has gone so far downhill, downhill into a cesspool of misogyny and crassness lacking in any wit or humour whatsoever, that I for one am glad it's going to be gone. If it weren't for all the amazing people I've met through FT over the years, I wouldn't feel nostalgic at all.

I have to admit, I've kept to very small corners of the forums for a long time now, and there's a reason for that. I'm more concerned about keeping in touch with people (and saving the POTO thread, because some actual comedy gold resulted there) than I am sad about losing the forums themselves.
From: [identity profile] skyblade.livejournal.com
Sad to see them go, especially my modest success, the Chick Tracts (http://forums.fametracker.com/index.php?showtopic=1995&st=0) thread. For the uninitiated, Chick Tracts (http://www.chick.com/default.asp) are fundamentalist comic strips that are creepy and hateful. I've a link to the community I hope to dedicate the subject to in my profile. Hope to see you there.
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
omg chick tracts! why did I never go to that thread!
From: [identity profile] skyblade.livejournal.com
There's still time to check it out. I think some of the funniest comments(not just mine! or even mine, for that matter) can be found in there.
From: [identity profile] spectralbovine.livejournal.com
Ah, the Chick Tracts are fabulous. Fabulously INSANE.

Have you heard about the guy who's doing science comics (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4495248) in the same style?
From: [identity profile] skyblade.livejournal.com
What kind of comic has scientists who aren't hit by gamma rays and turned into rampaging brutes? It's no wonder they have schools for this sort of thing.

Some people are creating alternative boards for the time being - will you join any of them? Damn, I'm going to miss FT :|

I joined a Yahoo group and Moldy Tofu's board--I think we're probably going to end up joining a lot of stuff and seeing what sticks, really.

I've been joining just about everything because I'm not sure what will stick - on LJ I joined [livejournal.com profile] stupidcrackmovie and [livejournal.com profile] hp_fametracker and I also joined Moldy's board, SNeaker's HP board, Jeeper's book board, and I'm waiting to be accepted at the Lotus Poison board... plus I registered at the ChickLit forums, even though they're not FT creations. Sigh. I still can't believe it's ending :(

Honestly? I haven't been spending as much time over at FT since I joined LJ a year ago. Sure, there's a lot of drama and whining and stupidity over here, as there is just about anywhere else, but I promise you, you *will* find intelligent conversation again. It might not be in as centralized a location, but we'll be out there. In fact, half the people I'm really good friends with on LJ are people I first met on FT (and totally forgot that's where I met them).

Well, I think there are certain things I will miss about FT, and other things that I'll forget about quickly. I've gotten used to finding info quickly on celebrities, and entertaining myself with really stupid threads (celeb endowments, celeb fashion). I also love lots of the threads like "Unpopular blahblah opinions" for some reason. I think I'll mainly miss the P&M section... although I did always feel kind of stupid visiting the English Language Usage thread ;) What's going to happen to the Blind Items? That was always really big...

Oh well, now I have a fridge covered in snarky magnets to keep the FT forum flames alive.

Bless. What kills me is that people are over in the "Last One Out" thread whining about how they had no idea FT was in such dire straits and if management had only told them that they actually needed to buy the OODTs, which have the word "Donation" in their name to begin with, they would have done so and saved the site. People, I haven't even been hanging out over there much because of grad school and *I* knew they were in trouble.
