This, too, had to be done.

(NO HOTLINKING, DAMMIT.)

I should add that the screen caps for this and the first Rent-a-Phantom animation came from [livejournal.com profile] cursetheflame at thephantom.org.

They should so make these for real. I'd rent one!

You're hotlinking if you link directly to that image file when you post it in your own diary for everyone to see.

You are not hotlinking if you save the image file and then upload it to your own webspace and then link that in your own diary for everyone to see.

Hotlinking puts excessive strain on bandwidth because there will be multiple pages trying to pull the file off the server. Using your own webspace (or linking to the original page) spreads the load around.

Or something. Maybe I'm wrong.

Cleo! I love the animations...but I have a question that I've been meaning to ask.

What does "ETA" mean? I know it has something to do with edits, but I'm not very learned in netspeak. Thanks!

No, that's what it is. If you copied the html code that says < img src=http:// siteofcleo.net/nameofcleosfilehere.gif> and put it in your own journal (WHICH I THINK PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DOING, BECAUSE MY PAID PHOTOBUCKET ACCOUNT HAS RUN OUT OF BANDWIDTH), you're stealing *my* bandwidth. If you upload it to your own website/photohosting account (< img src=http:// siteofjohndoe.net/nameofcleosfilehere.gif>), it's not hotlinking.

"Edited to add." Or, if you fly a lot, "Estimated time of arrival." Mostly it's used to catch someone's attention--like, you read the entry the first time I posted it, so I'm trying to catch your eye if you see it again to let you know that I've added something. Or, in some cases, it's to admit that the content has been changed, acknowledging that this is not what the poster originally said--particularly in a debate or discussion.

What was confusing me is how hotlinking--i.e., posting the image in your diary using your file--is different from linking directly to that comment (or to this entry, which links to that comment). Doesn't that cause the same increase in pageloads, because for each new person to view it, the file has to be taken from the server, right? Regardless of where they're viewing it?

It's true, that will cause an increase, and a lot of servers have been killed by that. I honestly can't tell if my Photobucket account has run out of bandwidth because everyone's going over *there,* or because people are actually hotlinking my files. But I've seen enough people do it with icons and graphics ("Look at the neat stuff I found!") that it's possible. I think what makes people so angry about hotlinking is that it's not like they know about specific instances or can do anything about it, whereas if I post this file and get 5000 comments, I could logically say, "You know what? I might want to take this file down before my bandwidth is slain." But really, the same thing could happen whether I get comments, or whether the file is hotlinked, or not.

I'm trying, but it's so long textwise, that the animation is too large for LJ sizes.

::sigh:: But hey, it's a snow day, I've got three graphics programs open, and I've already eaten. Let the compressing begin!
