Just a couple of things before I go forage for my nuncheon:

"Kansas Police Make Arrest in BTK Killings." Oh, WHOA. I was just reading up on this case earlier this week. This is big stuff, and if they really did catch the guy--you're going to be hearing a lot about him.

A different kind of crazy: poor Jenna Elfman, her brain has been et by Scientology. The article is notable in that it explains more about Scientology, and in a snarkier way, than most articles do. What's a "body thetan"? Wonder no longer.

This just in: yay presents! Tim Tams from [livejournal.com profile] redyu (thank you thank you thank you!) and something cylindrical! From I know not who! And I know not what! Because I'm going downstairs to get some scissors, and possibly a blowtorch! Whee!

The person in the comments who wondered how anybody could join a religion that sounds as if it were written by an 11-year-old just about summed up what I was thinking. Sheesh.

And the Crime Library! *swoons* I haven't been to the Crime Library in ages! (No, can't go now, have to write ... *grumblegrumble*)

Heh. I like the idea someone had that L. Ron Hubbard and one of his crazy sci-fi writer friends--can't remember which one--had a contest to see who could come up with the craziest religion, and L. Ron won. "And I got people to BELIEVE IT, too!"

Wow. So much for my mom's awsome reason why I couldn't go to Wichita in high school.

Bout time they got that guy. There was a while where they thought he might be a state trooper...now THAT was freakish.

Wow, I think my brain just died trying to read that Scientology piece. Good Lord. {The comments are quite amusing as well, although in a different way -- some of them get very snippy undertones, which is always good for a laugh.}

What are Tim Tams? I know they're a British thing, but... otherwise, I'm clueless. Cylindrical presents that require a blowtorch to open are always good, too.

Tim Tams are chocolate-covered chocolate cookies with a creamy chocolate center. I've only had them once, when I went to Australia. After two of them, I think I was shaking from the chocolate overdose. Absolutely divine. They really are very, very yummy.

I created a more sensible and realistic religion for a fantasy story when I was 11, and it involved dragon/human offspring and magic fire and a giant floating egg. And somehow, even with pseudo-reptilian bestiality, I'd still be more inclined to believe that over "a galactic ruler who paralyzed humans and sent them back to Earth in spaceships 75 million years ago".

Actually, it's quite cool, because it was inspired by but not based on real Earth religions, and I've been told that the creation story rocks.

Is it possible that BTK is an example of legal Darwinism? Seriously, congrats, you killed people a quarter of a century ago, and you would've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for those meddling kids if you just woulda shut the hell up about it and stop sending them cutesy notes and cereal boxes.

One of my friends has a job on her college's TV show, and she's covering the BTK case, so I got to hear about that this morning... hope it really is the guy. Eek.

And I considered Scientology in high school. When I checked out books on it, I didn't get into the whole 'body thetan' thing; I got just far enough to see that you progress in the religion by giving more and more money to get to the next level, and said, 'see ya'.

Scientology? SO much with the crazy, although it is where one of my friend's parents met. (They've since left the fold.) I swear, Tolkien's religions make wayyyyyyy more sense than this stuff.

Except for the bit where Tolkien felt that there was no other religion than Roman Catholicism... he hated the cultish interpretations of his work.

Weird, I know :)

Wow. It's cliché to say this, but that BTK story sounds like something out of a movie. What with all the letters and clues and his initials ending up being BTK.

Huh. Scientology believes in an OT3, just like fandom!

From: [identity profile] quizzicalsphinx.livejournal.com
I've been following this case for a couple of years, and I was horrified when he began sending his letters out again. So many things about BTK just stand out in serial killer literature, and this finale is absolutely amazing--he goes on a spree, vanishes for twenty years, then suddenly reappears . . . and is caught. This is almost the Jack the Ripper of our times. It would be fascinating if they could get him to talk.

Date: 2005-02-26 10:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
In another he complained, "How many do I have to kill before I get my name in the paper or some national attention?"

I don't think we're going to have a problem getting him to talk.

BTK is one of my favorite crime topics. It seems almost too like a movie the way he's interacted with the police. Like, I know it's horrible but I'm sorry--"Bill Thomas Killman" makes me giggle. If I weren't totally lazy, I'd be on my way to Kansas now with a laptop in tow. But alas--totally lazy.

That might be from me. I sent something cylindrical. If it's got a little orange happy face sticker on the address label, is from Canada, and bears the name Ewelina on the return address then it's from me. If it doesn't... well, then clearly it's not. If it is from me then sorry about the mass of tape I used.

Ooooh, Crime Library is SO my internet porn. I used to spend so much time on that site reading, that it scared my mother half to death. "Please stop reading about people who chop up other people, plzkthx", she used to say. I just find the fact that people are that sick sort of fascinating. Should I not admit that? Hm.

On the flip side, I think Jenna Elfman is a complete nut. And my opinion of her was formed BEFORE I found out she was a scientologist.

Killings where victims are random always freak me out way more than when the victim was a specific target. I don't live anywhere near Wichita, but I'm glad they caught him.

And Scientology doesn't sound any differen to me than many other religions. "We are the only way to go." "If you do not follow our way, bad things will happen to you." That's what most organized religions say, so JE doesn't seem any crazier to me than any truly religious person.

Okay, sorry but I just have to vent. I have loved this guy since I was a 11 year old misfit undergoing daily torture in grade-school. But how can you be so f**king brilliant and at the same time be so emotionally bent? How could he have done this to his family? And his wife's reaction is so forgiving and heartbreaking ...
And I get the sinking feeling that he KNEW, he KNEW, that his legend and reputation would only be enhanced by this g**damn act.
Arrgh, I'm going to bed - the world is making me tired. Thanks for letting me vent here.
