Soooooo now I have new glasses. We sweet-talked the Lenscrafters manager into filling a three-year-old prescription, and he even said I could come back (within 30 days) and they'd update the lenses free. Also, my mother's Triple A card somehow resulted in $99 off. I don't know, man. My one criterion was that they look as much like the old ones as possible--a slightly trianglish oval. So of course I walk out of there with rectangles. I mean, at least they're rounded, but they're very long, definite rectangles. I've had that same oval shape, in different variations, for about ten years now--and I would have been upset about the change if I weren't totally just like, "PLEASE PUT SOMETHING ON MY FACE." No one else was even there, so I had the manager and a clerk throwing frames around trying to find a good shape for my "wide temples," and square shapes are better on round faces, blah blah last month's issue of Mademoiselle blee, and when they found a pair that they and my mother liked, I was just like, "Fine, whatever." I squinted in the mirror and didn't blanch with revulsion, so I figured it would be all right. I guess I'll find out in class tomorrow if they look good--it's a small enough class (seven other people) that they'll notice and comment, but it's not like they know me so well that they're going to tread too carefully.

P.S. Please go read Vladimir's Phantom review and stop beating him up over Pirates. Don't scare the Squishy away!

Last time I went to get new frames, they were over $100. That has kind of put me off the glasses shopping "experience".

Rounded ovals are awesome. I am totally not biased at all.

I should see Phantom. Of course, I've been afraid of the Phantom ever since I was seven. It would not bode well.

Hey! Glad you were able to get new glasses (I have to wear mine when I'm at the computer, and since that's 90% of my waking life, yeah. Sympathy)

And on a somewhat off-topic note, I was wandering around the fanficrants community, and found an entry about Adele Sessler-- since I remembered her art, I followed that to a fandom wank (http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/541129.html) about her, and saw that you'd commented about it.

Me-- "It's a small internet after all..."

I've been meaning to pop in for quite some time and say hi. First heard of you back w/ your 15m version of Prisoner of Azkaban (which I LOVED and couldn't get out of my head when I went back to see it for the 3rd time in the theater). Then a friend re-introduced me to you w/ your 15m version of Phantom. Which again, I LOVED. I've seen that one 4 times so far. Been meaning to get back again, but haven't been able to. At any rate, I've been a loyal fan ever since (just love your perspective on the world at large). I read your LJ almost daily and I figured rather than seeming like I'm some pervy lurker, I should introduce myself. ;) We have very similar tastes. Love Pirates of the Carribean. Love Harry Potter. Love Lord of the Rings. Love movies in general (in fact, hope to become a director/writer some day). I loved your take on Phantom and Vladimir's as well. I guess I should comment over in his too as I did have a thought about his review.

Used to HATE my glasses ....

Date: 2005-02-04 03:40 am (UTC)

... but my eye doctor told me a couple of years ago that I was wearing my contacts too much. They were actually starving my eyes of oxygen and causing the veins in my eyes to enlarge to compensate (WTF!).

My dad passed away just before this eye appt - and I ended up putting lenses w/ my prescription in one of his frames. (Fortunately my dad was quite the hipster and wore these cool little gold oval frames.) I love my glasses now ... and my mother loves to joke about how Dad still helps me see things clearly ...

It can be hell breaking one's glasses, and does always seem to happen at the oddest times. Mine for instance were broken once by my foster brother in a way I wasn't even aware they could be broken, once in middle school, when I had to tape the bridge of the glasses to the rim near the lens (was uber-geek that day, because the brudge didn't break in the middle, it simply broke off the rim.)
Yeah, had the tape directly over part of my lens that time, so I decided it was better to be blind than humiliated, and therefore untaped them soon-after and walked about semi-blind the rest of the day.

Too many numerous other times to count.

My glasses are like a physical part of me, I take them off only to sleep and shower (I sometimes swim with them) but I've recently found that the best ones for lack of breaking are plastic, so I have like...brown foresty glasses of awesomness...and I suddenly realized I need to clean them.

cheers, and happy all your lens problems worked out.

Dude, for real. I should have gotten a new pair years ago, and I just couldn't deal with the idea that I might be changing one of my facial features, in essence. The only way it got done tonight was sheer emergency--like ripping a band-aid off.

Hmm, I think so--those are from a batch I've seen (http://www.livejournal.com/users/theiconized2x4/5883.html) that were properly credited. I think the actual maker of the icons is the one credited in this girl's keywords, so eventually you can trace it back to me. Generally I just let things like icons go--as long as no one's reposting an entire parody or claiming they wrote it, life's too short. : )

My glasses are slightly bent, vaguely scratched, and held together on one side by naught but the grace of a single bent staple...but I'll be damned if I'm going to part with them now.

(Not blanching with revulsion = a good sign. I'm sure you'll learn to love them soon enough.)

I'm sure they look very nice :) Were they able to do anything with the old glasses, or would it be easier just to get a spare new pair (though I imagine buying two pairs at one go would be a bit too much).

Date: 2005-02-04 07:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
I kind of wanted them to solder the old pair back together, but for now it looks like I'll be winging it on just one pair. Again.

I got bamboozled into buying a spectacularly ugly pair when I was 14. The saleslady kept waving all these frames around, and because I didn't actually have any glasses on, I couldn't see the frames very well. I ended up picking totally the wrong pair and not realising until I got them home - they were GIGANTIC, with a pointy bit above the nose that made me look like I had a unibrow. I've still managed never to have to wear them.

Hey fellow Potterhead! My name is Shayna and I'm starting an archive that will include HP fanfics and fanart. I read "HP and the PoA in 15 minutes" awhile ago, when the movie first came out. My friend printed it out and gave it to me, I thought it was hilarious, then promptly lost it. I've only just now found it again and re-read it, and my first thought was "I've gotta have this on my site!" So how 'bout it? Also, if you have any other fanfics or fanart (I saw you do icons) could I post those too? Cuz I really like your work. The site will be at www.thethreefandoms.com and it will be up and running by the end of February (hopefully).
Please email me at zoiy_grockle@yahoo.com asap. Thanx!

Could I perhaps borrow you for when I need to buy a new car? You seem to have some incredible powers of persuasion as some time ago I was a few months past the "expiration" on an eye prescription and couldn't get anyone to fill it.

Honestly? The person you need is my mother. She's a benefits director and--well, that doesn't have much to do with it, I guess, except that she's used to talking to people who control these things all the time. She was just like, "Look, it's an emergency, my daughter has a paper and 100 pages of reading and class tomorrow and she just needs SOMETHING ON HER FACE. We will totally get her a new eye exam and a new pair of updated lenses as soon as we can schedule it." (And then she got the Lenscrafters manager to promise free upgraded lenses. Heh.)

She's great with cars, actually. A couple of years ago she passed her current car on to my sister and bought a new one for herself. She walked into the dealership and said, "Look, I want this make of car, and I want it with a moon roof, and I want it in California blue, and I want it for this price. Someone in this town is going to sell me that car to me. It can be you, or it can be someone else. Do you want my money?" And she totally got it, too.

Who knows, the frames might even end up looking better than the old ones! I think I have vaguely the same kind of shape to my glasses.

Also, isn't that AAA thing GREAT? I got those discounts too. So weird.
