AHHHHH SHIT. My glasses just spontaneously broke. Shitfire. You know where the frame curves over the lens and meets the nosepiece? Like, right there. I was just sitting here in front of the computer, working on Titanic and minding my own damn business, and the damn frame just breaks, pop! It's not a matter of a loose screw or a broken joint; the wire frame itself just snapped apropos of nothing. SHIT. I don't wear contacts and--of course!--I only have one pair of glasses. I do not have TIME for this. I have a paper and two movie parodies and about 90 pages of reading due for tomorrow. NO NO NO.

(I needed a new pair anyway. I wonder if there's any way I can go down to the little optometrist's shop on Merchant's Walk and just be like, "I was here five years ago. Pull up my records--NO, YOU DO SO HAVE MY RECORDS! YOU DO! YOU DO!--and just make me a new pair. No, I don't have time for you to poke me in the eye. I am NEARSIGHTED and my vision is twenty over SOMETHING and I have a slight ASTIGMATISM. Here's two hundred dollars, work your damn magic.")

(Dear Optometrist and Assistants: I would like to apologize in advance for any crazed grad students who may run in shrieking orders today. If you get a fruit basket tomorrow, it's from me.)

The sad thing is, I actually have pretty good vision--I think my prescription was something like 20/135. For years it was 20/75. So I can see--it's just a bitch because I'm used to seeing a hell of a lot better, and now I'm having to squint all over the place. You just know this is going to end in migraines and tears. Sigh.

ETA: Red Mountain Optometry says they think they still have my prescription, and they'll give it to me so I can go to Lenscrafters later tonight. Lenscrafters says they can do their thing in an hour. In the meantime, I'll be losing four or five hours of good reading-writing time (it will be transmuted into bad reading-writing time), but I won't have to sit in class blinking like a sun-blinded mole tomorrow, at the very least.

I am still so pissed off about the randomness and stupidness of the whole thing that I could cry.)

I dunno about further south, but in VA they won't fill a prescription older than 24 months. Which would mean back to the optometrists....

Sometimes they have a little gadget to read the prescription directly from the lenses: pop the glasses in, it tells you the prescription.

Worth a try...

If your glasses are 5 years old, you need a new test, because you need to know if it's gotten worse. :p But that doesn't take very long.

In the meantime, I prescribe duct tape. *G*

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
see, the problem is that they broke in a place where the duct tape would have to go, like, over the lens, unless you taped 'em together and then somehow wedged the lens back in... I dunno. : (

They might be able to solder (sp?) it back together. I've had to have that done before when mine broke in the exact same spot.

BTW, hi! I added you a few weeks ago and have been enjoying your journal. :-)

Ugh, that happened to me last fall, and I had to wait three weeks before I could get new glasses. I hope you get yours before too long.

My glasses did exactly that last school year! I was walking across the classroom, not even touching the stupid things, and they just fell off my face, in pieces.

It's a conspiracy. Of what, I don't know. ;)

Do you have Walgreens or similar there? They usually have up to 20/100 near the reading glasses. Probably about $12. Cheaper than a migraine. :-/ (And I have 20/450 so if something happens to my glasses... I am SO SCREWED.)

Date: 2005-02-03 08:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rachnye.livejournal.com
Ha! 20/550! Beat you! ...wait... *realizes that's not really winning anything* ...hey!

Did you know that we're both legally blind without the glasses? I think the cutoff point is 20/300.

Ugh, glasses are a bitch arent they? They could solder it or something, but I know that totally new frames and lenses take about a week before they're ready...

You cant do worse than me though...so far, I've lost about 13 pairs of glasses. Not on PURPOSE of course...but I'm longsighted AND shortsighted. My eyes are just fucked.

Get these ones fixed and get a new pair, and keep the old ones as a spare. I always keep my old glasses as backup - I've never needed them, but I never never never want to be in the situation you're in now. Mainly because my vision is so bad that getting to an optician without my glasses would be difficult.

I have plastic nerd glasses, so I don't have to worry about them breaking unless they snap in half. Though the pin did come out from one of the ear pieces so I stuck a safety pin in as a pin and I keep forgetting to get a repair kit. It looks pretty dumb.

Maybe someone can read aloud to you? Then you will at least get some in.

I know that without glasses or contacts, I'm pretty much done for (though the other way around). And that I will somehow manage to be without both at a critical moment. Yay for finding an optometrist and cry if it helps. :/

Could be worse. I managed to snap mine in that spot while on fieldtrip in Italy. If I actually wanted to see the things I was meant to be studying, I had to pull a Harry Potter and tape up my glasses. My hard hat kept jogging them out of the tape. For a couple of days, I had half my vision obscured by tape until I could wrangle a soldering iron (and that took some wrangling) and spot-soldered them back together. Not the most attractive look in the world, but I could see! And had a spare pair back home, which was a relief when the optician wouldn't get them back to me within a month. Stupid UK opticians and their stupid business practices.

But yeah, not a happy experience for you, when they just go like that, especially with the deadlines and stuff. Much sympathy.

Whenever I wear my glasses, they always break. Someone rams into me or the screw just randomly comes loose. I guess they're punishing me for switching to contacts.

OH SHIT.

This is why I've got chunky plastic frames (now with unbreakable polymer lenses!). I may look like the Goddess of the Geeks, but my glasses have never broken on me. I've been tossed off a horse and landed pretty much glasses first, and they didn't break.

Ack! I'm sorry. I would be flipping out too. I once watched a friend of mine take off his emo glasses (which he didn't need for his vision anyway) as they broke in half right there in his hands.

You've got astigmatism too? *astigmatism hug*

Or you could have done like i did and bus to work in the pouring rain and have the glasses slide off your face into the storm drain while climbing onto the bus and have you boss give you a ride back home so you can a) change into dry clothes and b) find a 6 year old pair of emergency glasses.

Do you have a Sears? They were running a pretty darn good sale last week, but they probably couldn't do it an hour. My husband got his glasses for $97. (Any frame priced up to $150 + lenses for $97.)

Once had plastic frame break, and took it to a little opticians shop that put the lens into a new frame for me. Not sure if someone could do that for you.
This is probably redundant, but you do know you can have bigger text on internet explorer, under view, text size. Probably could use larger font in your word processor too if it helps.
Or you could check under windows start menu, Accessories, Accessibility, Magnifier. That is if you are using windows.
Hope that can help.

Thanks--I upped the size on Word, but I've actually been having problems with IE lately--it'll randomly decide that today the text should be tiny, but tomorrow it should be huge. I'll definitely play around with that.

Do you have crazy glue? My glasses snapped in that same spot once and I just glued the frame to the lens. It was just for a couple of hours until I could get new glasses, but it worked well enough.

Don't you hate when that happens..

Sorry about the frames. And I know your pain of having glasses break in a weird spot. Once both of my nose pieces snapped off leaving only sharp, stabby metal pieces. Since I had no contacts or spares with me, I had to put tape on each of he stabby parts, but they wouldn't stay on. So I then had to wrap tape around the bridge part and tape it to my FOREHEAD. So they were just...sort of..hanging there. All day. For two days, til I could get home and get my spare pair.

*embarassment*

That was a completely inappropriate Titanic reference, and for this I apologize.

Okay, I would def. call on this but ...

I once got an optical shop to do a temp. fix for me on a similar problem. I was in the middle of finals and they jury-rigged something together to get me through. They wouldn't guarantee the work and made me sign paper to that effect - but while the fix was ugly (they basically soldered part of the frame back together) it worked better than duct tape.

Also those guys at the shoe/eyeglass repair places can sometimes fix you something up if you find someone nice and not Mr. grumpy.

Good luck sweetie.

Dude, i empathise. I'm as blind as a bat and if my glasses break I'm pretty much screwed. It gives me one of those panicky heart-fluttery moments like when I think I've lost my purse. Which obviously is far too big a reliance on something but then hey, I can't see otherwise! :)

Date: 2005-02-03 08:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Well, I can see, but it's more that I've become so reliant on the glasses that it's really weird when I take them off. The optometrist guy was like, "Really, you don't even need to wear them if you're not reading or writing," and I looked him square in the eye and said, "Dude, that's when I'm sleeping."
