Jan. 30th, 2005 09:44 amHey... I've gotten about half a dozen anon comments from the same IP in about half an hour, and I can't read them--I don't even know what the language is, because I don't have whatever characters they're in enabled, and all I can see are boxes. Could someone take a look at them and tell me what's going on? Because I'm going to have to start screening anonymous comments and/or ban this person if it doesn't stop, but they may actually be, uh, really nice? And I just can't tell...? Right. And I really don't want to screen anons by default, because I have some non-LJ regulars I really like having around. Anyway, I suspect it's an Asian language, because I know that I don't have Japanese or Chinese characters installed on this computer. Can anyone help?
http://www.livejournal.com/users/cleolinda/234490.html
P.S. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO ANY OF THESE COMMENTS. I just want to understand what's being said, not get into a flame war with anyone. They will be deleted, so don't bother.
ETA: We seem to have a consensus that it's Japanese. Random Japanese. (And yes, I can see the two English comments and the "Ugly American" bit.) And when I say I can't see the characters, I mean that I literally see those empty box symbols. So... yeah.

Date: 2005-01-30 03:50 pm (UTC)Try this, you'll get the gist of the comments that way if you chose the language of the website you want translated to be Japanese to English.
Seems like the poster is trying stir some shit...

and
You reminds me cheap post war American Capitalism,
which is supposed to be capital intensive, like big consulting firms, but the reality is that it is the mass production of mass pruducts for "commoners".
I mean, business consultants are factory workers, who is programmed and ordered to take a certain role of mass production, in a efficient way.
and the fourth one has an 'ugly American' thrown in there. If that helps. I can see the charas but don't understand them, so.

Date: 2005-01-30 04:21 pm (UTC)This does not sound random, there's two ways to infer from this exchange.
1) For the attention-starved, this is a conversation between several of your Japanese readers, using your blog as a forum of sorts. Congratulations, Cleo. You've made it in Japan. And when they say if you can make it there...
From the first two anonymous messages in English, this would be the obvious reason, however, if you read between the lines and go deeper...
2) For the conspiracy-minded, this is a more ominous notice. This is an exchange between people to meet somewhere overseas to plan for something, and choosing your blog as their forum was a random coincidence. The intention could be anything, whatever it is, but the "Ugly American" sticks out like a sore thumb, and doesn't sound encouraging, especially with references to a party.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but you have the IPs tracked, right? Report them to the mods. Not that it'll do any real good, but you never know...
Then again, there is:
3) Where I could be wrong, and this could all be some ploy from a bored hikikomori trying to get a rise out of us. This is doubtful, but the exchange does sound like something out of a Japanese novel...

Date: 2005-01-30 06:22 pm (UTC)I had the same thing happen on one of my entries that I think I linked you to when you got the first one in English (like I had) and my friend who is a Japanese language major could barely translate them and we concluded they are spam.
Mine came out in the little boxes too. The translations were vaguely hilarious in that, WTFdoesthismean? way.

Date: 2005-01-31 11:10 am (UTC)But on the homepage of sixapart (=the mothership) there are two articles. A short one (http://www.sixapart.com/log/2005/01/support_for_nof.shtml) with lots of further TrackBacks and an extensive Guide to comment spam (http://www.sixapart.com/pronet/comment_spam.html).
I didn't read them, but maybe they will help you to understand what's going on.
