So. Vladimir has finished translating White Jazz (so proud of him!), while I am still stuck running behind, plus my right eye has started twitching again from too much computer usage. I still can't believe how sweet y'all were in that entry from the other day, though--"I do believe in funny" was just a throwaway comment that I didn't expect people to actually run with. Bless. The funny seems to be picking up a little, too, so maybe all that clapping worked. : )

Assorted news and points of interest:

I love this story, and almost want to write a movie about it.

"Shrieking Frogs Unnerve Hawaiian Island." And that island's nerves were already shot after nearly failing that final, let me tell you what.

I think I got this from [livejournal.com profile] anne_jumps: a MST of a new Jack Chick tract ("Not only does the Prince of Darkness have a gaggle of ugly hooded demons with no opposable thumbs and a permanent case of full body psoriasis, but he also has a lousy tailor. Damn, go to Men’s Wearhouse or something").

[livejournal.com profile] restriction has started a new [livejournal.com profile] lost_australia community for Lost fans in... well, Australia. I think the show is starting there soon? And believe me, y'all will be glad to have a place to discuss the show away from us spoilerhounds. (I think there are a couple of other comms, but Renne was saying that they hadn't really caught fire, so she was going to set up one of her own. Hence my offer to pimp it here.)

I love you, Cimorene!

Speaking of icons, I'm going to make a general-interest [livejournal.com profile] m15m post on the subject, but make sure you check the memories--under the keyword "Icons," I've saved some really good large-batch icon posts. I can't put everything people send me in memories (woe), but I have tried to put things I thought a lot of people would like--if you go through them, there are several Carlotta, creepy monkey, and "Neigh, baby" icons, as people have requested.

Sister Girl, meanwhile, is looking for someone who speaks Hawaiian to help her out with a recipe she apparently has to write for cooking school--she knows what she wants to do, just not what to call things, like "toast." I don't know. That's just what she told me to tell y'all. Anyone...?

White Jazz, the Ellroy novel?

I love Ellroy. Although White Jazz is the beginning of his ADD bebop phase, which is just a little too much for me. Hats off to Vlad! It sounds like a challenge.

Thanks!

Yeah, it was quite challenging... coming right on the heels of Tolkien's Unfinished Tales, to boot. From what I understand most people find it a bitch to read, so I guess I shouldn't feel too bad that it took me more than two months to do it. Feel totally proud of my rendition, too. Although it did make me feel totally burned out by the end...

...so what does my publisher do to reward me? Hands me a whole another friggin' book to translate by MONDAY, yo. Granted, it's some stupid Bob Dylan scrapbook, written in a tenth-grader style -- you know, one of those titles where you never even have to look up a word -- but it's still 63 pages to do over a weekend I had pegged for relaxing and mild sedated blogging.

The Edgar Allen Poe thing would make a great movie. Perhaps it could even be a semi-biographical movie that keeps flashing back between Poe's destructive life and the life of the man who places the roses there.

Oh, also, big news... a friend of mine *might* get a part in POTC 2 and 3. As a pirate. Or a cannibal. And he'd be off shooting in the Carribean for 6 months. And yesterday he met Gore Verbinski and he saw Johnny Depp, who was on his way to a meeting and waved to Gore. *squee!* I hope I'm not jinxing this for him. I thought some of your readers might like to know something about POTC (like apparantly there are now cannibals?), and I'm just too excited about it.

"Shrieking Frogs Unnerve Hawaiian Island." And that island's nerves were already shot after nearly failing that final, let me tell you what.

I keep thinking of the scene in My Cousin Vinny with the owl and picturing a few thousand islanders running out of their homes at night, shoes in hand, wondering where the frogs are.

Oh man, those Jack Chick 'cartoons'-- I never know whether to laugh or bonk my head against a wall repeatedly at the thought that someone might actually be that stupid.

From: [identity profile] meredith-mae.livejournal.com
I know. There are just... no words for Jack Chick. If it were a parody site it would be hilarious. But since he's serious it just kind of makes me want to cry...

Date: 2005-01-20 10:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] allthelivesofme.livejournal.com
Oh man, he *is* serious??? I'd heard several people theorize that he was just a satirist... if not, 'yikes' on a massive scale. :-P

Date: 2005-01-21 12:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Yeah, he's serious--he's gotten really angry with people who have satirized his work on other sites and made them take it down.

I don't want to be Elfstar anymore!

He's serious. He also claims that the Southern Baptists are controlled by the Illuminati, Allah is a moon god, and the Catholics are unknowingly worshipping Astarte.

[livejournal.com profile] spottylogic got a copy of his DVD, "The Light of the World" and I went over and mercilessly heckled watched it. Well, for large stretches of it we were doing impromptu renditions of songs from Jesus Christ Superstar. It's almost impossible to describe.

Ugh. I was really hoping he was just a parody-writer. Hm. Maybe he and Fred Phelps are buddies?

Anyway, his stuff *definitely* deserves to be mst3k'd all over the place.

You know, if Satan was as busy as those two think, I bet he'd be encouraging a few loons to act like asshats in the name of God, thereby making Christianity look foolish and/or intolerant...

Hmmm.

I lived in Hawaii for almost 4 years, and picked up quite a bit of Pigeon, not the actual Hawaiian language, but I might be able to help since Pigeon is what most everyone uses there. Also http://www.e-hawaii.com/default.cfm has a searchable 'pigeon-english' dictionary.
The link about the frogs wouldn't work for me, but they're the same as the Coqui' that are like the Puerto Rican National animal symbol. They sound to me a lot like cicadas, and they never bothered much, but they can be pretty loud.

here's someone else on lj that definitely speaks hawaiian. I dont actually know her, but ive seen her on the martial artists comm and she seems nice enough. She certainly seems interested in all things hawaiian, so she may be able to help if your sister reaches a dead end. cheers!

Oooh, thanks for the Aussie Lost community rec< I was wondering how long that would take *heee*. It starts here in Feb, and i must say, I'm grateful you've been putting your spoilers behind cuts. Thanks!

With so much hype on my flist though, it's been hard not to peak, specially with the title of your post yesterday O__o

It's so hard to not peek isn't it! I'm veerrrah curious as to the show though. Although I can't believe they're using celebrities to 'endorse' it in the advertising! *snorts* if anything, John Wood wanting to watch it would put me off!

I'm actually guilty of reading the first three/four episode recaps of cleo's and TWOP's because I thought knowing Australia it wouldn't come here for a couple of years but then I made myself stop cause I didn't want to ruin myself for when when it did finally come here but luckily it didn't take too long. But golly I'm so excited, I remember the first time I saw the ad I jumped up and down like a nerd and was so excited. :P

Hahaha god I hate them promoting it. "It's like Predator and Jurassic Park" "I'm dying to know the secret"

(sorry Cleo for clogging your inbox ;)

Aussie has been been a little better in recent years bringing stuff in cos the networks are always looking for that Next Big Thing. So as soon as something's a hit over there, they all battle to snap it up. But Channel 7 sucks balls when it comes to keeping consistent timeslots - Scrubs for example. So annoyed it's them that won Lost.

I'm glad you stopped reading, as we can newbie together *grn*... I jumped up and down when I saw the ad too!!! So excited! But yes, what the bloody hell is up with the predator vs jurassic park crap... they're giving away half the plot before we see anything!
