Tired. Spent the day working on book samples to send to Orion. The Matrix seems to have gone over like gangbusters, so that's good. Also, I've been reading cultural studies-type stuff for my "Aesthetics of Sentiment" class--it's the kind of thing where I understand each word individually, but then they start talking about the current post-terrorism, post-identity hegemonies devaluating the personal-as-political and promoting universality to the detriment of subjective viewpoint, and I wake up half an hour later with print on my face from a drool-dampened course pack.

Poor Lucky Dog was sick and spent all of yesterday under my desk moping. He spent the morning at the vet and came back a lot friskier, bless his heart.

Oh, and Vladimir has put up his CV, if you'd like to know more about the Squishy.

I actually understood that! **glows**

I'd rather not have to listen to that kind of talk for three hours at a time though. Ouch!

Everybody's tired today. Don't know what it is.

Got an idea for a new King Arthur in 15 icon. If I find the right pic, mind if I make one? I promise you'll have first dibs.

... well, I understood the word 'the' and 'as' and... yeah, that made me feel quite not smart.

Oh thank god. So clearly my brain is on auto pilot and not understanding funny things today. Maybe I should try this "sleep" that I keep hearing about.

Don't *ever* pick up Marvin Harris' The History of Anthropological Theory The entire thing is written like that. The bitch of it is that he's got several books for the anthropological layperson - he can write understandably, but for that book, he threw coherency out the window and went for three six-syllable words when one two-syllable word would do.

Oops, sorry, that was The Rise of Anthropological Theory. It's very important to get that right; I wouldn't want you accidentally wander into the minefield.

Cleo, that was honestly how I felt in my International Relations (can't recall the real name) class... I was like... "Errrm, I know what those words mean, but I don't think you can use them together like that!"

Yeah, we've gotta remember the rule: Never use a big word where a diminuitive one will suffice. Heh.

Daaaahling!

Thanks for all your comms! Thing is, would you like to have done all that and be stuck doing reviews and translations which get linguistically decimated for years on end? ...Isn't much of an accomplishment if you look at it that way, really.

*blush*

well even if i did look at it that way it's still bloody impressive since i only had two jobs in my life (and i'm the same ages as cleo)

working at a newpaper-stand for six months
and working at a friends bakkery till the friendship exploded (long messy story :p)

but true it must not be pleasent to have done soo much and not reached your dream yet... i wish you all the luck with that ;)

but like i said... my cv would be eum very short... infact IT IS short ;)lol since i don't have a degree of anything... (except maybe bugging people online - i would sooo graduate 'cum laude' ;))

best of luck in achievin your dream ;)

Yeah, it's sad for me that the academics studying the kinds of pop culture things I'm interested in are waaaay off the postmodernist deep end. -_-

Your icon is soooo pretty! Is the picture a specific character, or just a drawing?

It's by Takada Akemi. I don't think it's a specific character, but I don't know...

So, I have to take a sample of a writing style I enjoy or admire (or something) to my creative writing class tomorrow. I'm taking Troy in 15 Minutes (which is eating my printer as we speak).

Lest you get a big head, from what I've got available here at school it was either that or Good Omens, and I don't fancy trying to emulate the Pterry/Gneil tag team if that's what our professor's getting at. Still, *shamelessly flatters*

Awww! Hee. It's definitely a distinctive style, the fifteen minutes, so it should be pretty easy to emulate.

My advisor, a radical lesbian separatist, was really big on heaving stuff like that at us in the few classes I took under her. I found the best way to deal was writing papers on one of her pet subjects, then establishing some kind of overarching premise like "war is bad" (for instance) and then slinging as many strung-together phrases as the above togaether as I could manage. I passed the classes. Either she was giving me good grades out of cynicism because she saw through me, didn't give a shit, or really thought I knew my stuff, I came away with a good GPA. Just to pass that along.

Any advice on how to avoid that kind of teachers?

Because if I'm gonna turn my life upside-down and go abroad to study, the last thing I need is ideology crammed down my throat.

*checks throat*

Yep, quite a lot of them down there already.

Well, this one wore orthopedic sandals, batik-print drawstring pants, cardigans, womyn-made jewelry, and had the most sexless short-cropped haircut you could imagine. Also this sort of brittle veneer of joviality that barely masked an overwhleming desire to remake the world the way she saw fit and a bitterness that she was unable to. I was young and dumb or I would have run away. As it was, I tried to appease the Crazy. I did get decent grades, so I suppose there's something to be said for appeasement, in the form of long, incomprehensible term papers.

If that, uh, helps...
