DO IT NOW!
LJ... the hell? What now?
Date: 2005-01-06 06:39 pm (UTC)They love that stuff. Shows engagement and enthusiasm and not-artisteness.
Re: LJ... the hell? What now?
Date: 2005-01-06 07:35 pm (UTC)Re: LJ... the hell? What now?
Date: 2005-01-06 10:07 pm (UTC)Out of my depth now. I have an agent, but he's only for Big Deals of Movie Treatment. I always send stuff to the editor (or art manager or design manager) and studiously cultivate a relationship with him/her. Familiarity is good. Clever, warm emails (which you can do without violence to your selfhood) are good.
It's sounds like your editor and agent are both women. GREAT.
Publishing rules:
1: Never complain, never explain.
2: Be Prompt.
3: Failing 2, be communicative. How was your Holiday?
4: On deadline day, send what you have, to show good faith. They'll have a meeting over it and pick it apart anyway.
5: Consider them friends. They like your stuff enough to hire you, and they need you to solve their problems. Match! *smooch* Don't conflate editors with the Deadline Enemy. They are generally lovable tykes who dig the same stuff you do. So open a dialogue and let them in. With class and style and high spirits, of course.
6: Sock your money away.
7: Stay as sweet as you are. All this is but normal hell when you are first published. Keep your friends, keep your head, and you'll be fine.
Re: LJ... the hell? What now?
Date: 2005-01-07 08:47 am (UTC)My agent's female, but my publisher guy--I don't know if he's an editor or not; he seemed to be in charge of acquisitions--well, he's a guy. But really nice.
And thanks.
