[livejournal.com profile] bradfitz speaks: Six Apart/Movable Type has indeed bought LiveJournal. (Thanks for the heads up, [livejournal.com profile] farohji.)

P.S. You might want to read the actual post. It's actually very heartening: they're not going to combine LJ and MT, and not much is going to change, except they're going to add prettier layouts and more support and stuff. All panic is on hold until further notice.

Why does this make me irrationally frightened?

And what does it mean to "back up" your account. Does anyone know?

Oh! Thanks for the headsup, I was looking for some official announcement but couldn't pin it down. Brad sounds on the up-and-up about the whole thing, of course, but I'm sitting here crossing my fingers and praying very hard that it does not FUBAR LJ as we know and love it, because that would majorly SUCK.

*hates not getting to watch LOST until next week... so. hard. to. stay. away. from. SPOILERS.*

Awww. Actually, Brad's statement sounds very much like he understands what we like about LJ, and he's not going to take that away. (Most telling moment in the general hysteria today: a rumor started up that they were going to "take away the friends list.")

Hee, FUBAR. You've been hanging out with Vladimir, haven't you? ; )

Oh, I don't even want to think about the firebombing and riots ruckus that would ensue if THAT rumor were true. Mein gott. You could burn up half of Canada's forests with the flames.

And yes I have--although I learned FUBAR from a Trek board where I used to hang out, where bemused regulars explained the meaning of the term to me in excruciating detail. *eyeroll*

Hee. I just noticed that he's been saying that a lot--it's very nearly rubbed off on me.

Nah, it's probably due to the high incidence of FUBARation of things lately. LJ had better not turn out that way as well!

Silly question I imagine... but what does FUBAR mean?

Frelled Up Beyond Any Recognition, or similar variants.

Now you're going to ask me what the frell 'frell' means, aren't you?

For an exhaustive discussion of its origin, see the Jargon File entry for "foo": http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/F/foo.html

Next question: Is FUBAR etymologically related to SNAFU (Situation Normal, All Frelled Up)?

Well, off to Xanga! I've got to create some really awful background music, set to the 1980's comedy "Silver Spoons", and I'll make teh Ricky Schroeder Wallpaper! Yay!!

Thing is... yeah, it sounds good, but *brad can't say those things*. He no longer has any control over the company. And far too many times I've seen companies make sweet promises when they take over another company, only to see the taken over company gutted for parts and userbase and left to rot in the sun.

Read the press releases for any merger. Everything's always daffodils and roses. What, you think they're going to mention the problems they're aware of, or even be aware of all problems?

Still, there's nothing we can do, and I'm not overly concerned.

Were you paying attention when Six Apart fucked their loyal userbase about a year ago? They lost about half of us through backtracking on pretty words. I'm not all that optimistic at the mo', but LJ has always been a meetup place for me and I won't lose much if it's buggered.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Well, of course. I'm just saying, at least they're being all falsely optimistic about not changing things instead of being falsely optimistic about changing everything. If they'd come out and said, "We're changing everything, and you're going to love it!," you'd just have to follow my dust trail to Greatest Journal.

About time they came out with a statement!

I fall in the shrugging shoulders and "eh" category. As a proper cynic and realist, I don't believe it is as happy, happy, joy, joy as it sounds. However, nothing I can do about it, anyway.

I just don't want lj to go away or change drastically. I like it here.

I just finished The Crimson Petal and the White and I'm feeling kind of let down because I invested like, a whole week in this book and this is what I get? But anyway, do you know what month you wrote about reading it? I'd like to read your opinions again. Thanks.
