Well, my class was mysteriously cancelled for the day, and also, there are conflicting reports of what time the class actually is. Yay.

I would just like to take a moment here to add to the general panic and hysteria floating around Livejournal re: the Six Apart takeover. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! All right, I'm done. However, should the people who brought us the horrors of Movable Type ("Pay us some more! Now pay us again!") screw up LJ functionalities, well, I'll see you all over on Greatest Journal. I think an official announcement is coming tomorrow, so if Brad actually comes out and says something, someone please come get me, okay?

Oh, and yes, I know Lost is about to come on. I won't sleep through this one. ; )

I'm so bitter that MT went pay-only. It's such a brilliant program and I still use the most recent build of 2.0, but... I can't afford to pay for a liscence. I can't find a pirated version of 3.0 anywhere either, haha.

good lord. My school used movable type and I hated it. Hated it. I don't *care* how bloody customizable it supposedly is, I don't want to get caught in math css hell just to make my page look slightly different.

I'm not familiar with movable type, but I'm scared. I'm paid up here at LJ through August, so we'll see how it goes. If it goes. What exactly is Movable Type?

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
It's software that allows you to customize your blog. I've never used it, and I've heard that it's good software, but that they make you pay for each update, and really, I like the idiotproofness of LJ.

They had better not force everyone to keep paying for LJ or a lot of people will be pissed off.

Date: 2005-01-05 05:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
I'm less concerned with the paying, because I have a feeling that people will vote with their wallets, if you know what I mean. I'm more concerned that they'll make LJ uselessly complicated to use, and I just really do not have the time or patience for that.

Completely unrelated: I thought I should let you know I recently made an icon based on this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/cleolinda/196637.html) post. I assumed that you wouldn't mind , but if for some reason you do, I'd be glad to, er, stop using the icon. Or something.

Also? Good luck with the book.

Class was cancelled? Oh... damn.

So... wait. What's the big issue here? I read the article but somehow I'm even more confused. Leave it to me. What's Greatest Journal like, anyhow?

YAY LOST. I'm at class right now (meh) and I'll be home around 9:15 to watch my tape and (hopefully) read your recap. KATE AND SAWYER AND JACK OMG.

GJ runs on LJ opensource software, so it's exactly the same, except with a different color scheme. Also, free accounts get something like 1000 icons and photo hosting. (I know, I know--why are we all over here?)

The problem with Movable Type is that they started making people pay for every upgrade. That, and it's just way more complex than I want to be forced to deal with. If they make it OPTIONAL, and I could try it out whenever I felt like it, I would be fine with it. But if we wake up one day and our journals are all messed up and they get rid of communities and all the stuff that people love about LJ, well, I'm outta here.

I use WordPress over at http://kittysaysmoo.com. Freeware, community supported, and powerful. Very nice. If lj gets funky I'll just skip the personal blogging and concentrate on my essays there.

Out of curiosity: why GreatestJournal and not JournalFen? Looks as though they're both based on the open-source code used for LJ...

Hm. If Six Apart decides to take LJ for-profit, it'll be interesting to see what happens to the aforementioned open-source code. Of course, the current version's already propagating itself happily, thank Pete. But still.

I'll answer for Cleo, since OMG I have a sykic connection with her. Heee.

JournalFen is 18 and older and is meant to be fandom related. Greatest Journal doesn't have those restrictions. Also, I think if 20,000 people fled to JF, Robin and Zorrojo (owners of JF) would cry. Unless they all got paid accounts, maybe. It might end up crashing JF semi-regularly (more), though, which would be bad.

In addition to what Deo said--which is true, but not even the first thought in my head: JournalFen goes down five times a day like a two dollar whore. I mean, sorry, but there it is. I've never had a problem with GJ--which may be because I rarely use that journal, and then usually to post on a specific community--and it's got, like 1000 icons for free accounts. JournalFen's... kinda rickety.

From: [identity profile] qe2.livejournal.com
Also helpful. I did notice when I clicked over to check it out that it was down - with a "Sorry, working on something" message that was a model of uninformativity - and that, though I could get to the main page a bit later, anything past that was once again down.

Off to Greatest Journal to reserve me a space.

OK, suddenly I'm feeling paranoid about all the stories I have bookmarked from LJ. It's bad enough when someone's website vanishes, but if LJ went poof, or if a bunch of writers I like suddenly deleted their journals, I'd lose way too many stories I love to reread. [fret] I have plenty of space on my HD, but I'd really rather not do that. We'll have some notice before it all goes pear-shaped, if it does, right? :/

Wait.... Fall asleep during lost?

::tapes your eyelids open::

Haha! Never again.

(spoilers... but... all of you should be watching Lost anyways...)

Actually, I'm wondering, I seem to be skipping an episode of Lost every week it comes on. What happened to the pregnant girl? Didn't see that episode. Last time I saw her she was eating invisible peanut butter. Eh...

UGH. You have NO IDEA how much this annoys me.

I used MT for years on my personal website. If you don't use something like LJ, MT IS the best software for publishing. Then they suddenly went pay (which is fine, but $70? Each update? Oh, blow me). And now they're pissing in my LJ.

In conclusion: It vexes me. I'm terribly vexed.

Just for you...

Ok. I realize this has absolutely NOTHING to do with anything (it's a gift I have), but I felt that you, dear Cleo, (and the people that read your journal) would enjoy this... Ugg, man I don't wanna see something bad happen to LJ :(. But ya got a day off from class, so yay!

Oh and Lost...man, THAT was one good hour of tv! I'll have to re-watch that after I see Troy tomorrow..

Then I'm watching Alias, and the briefcase shows up AGAIN! It was like a Capital One commercial...'What's in YOUR briefcase?!' (Alias' briefcase was not accompanied by Wet Sawyer, so it loses points :P)

And...yeah. My random bit of insanity I decided to share with you guys today.

I'm scared. A group of friends from high school had a blog over at MT, but they started being asshats and you couldn't do multiple posters without paying outrageous sums (for poor college students anyway), so the guy who ran our blog shut it down. I always had trouble posting to it too, it confused me. LJ is simple, I finally got everything figured out and I don't screw up the code for LJ cuts or links anymore. I don't want them to screw up my journal. I don't want everyone running away and then I can't find their journals anymore.
