Y'all have been so sweet, but... I don't quite think you understand the depth of the shit I'm in. My deadline is--was--today, and I so incredibly didn't make it. You know how I keep talking about the Matrix? Yeah. It's almost done. And it's the only one. Now you see why I'm panicking. But, really--I can't write any harder or faster; it's not like they can break out the whip and punish me because I'm not doing the best and the most I can do. I'm basically just hoping for mercy and understanding at this point.

P.S. My sore throat is about to drive me nuts.

More on the tsunami destruction:

Sandra Bullock is good people.

I had an idea myself. Let's say I open a new Cafe Press store--I think my old one is kind of dead--and put a variety of designs up. The first one I'm thinking about is, quite simply, "woe." All lowercase, probably a light blue, period. Not because it has anything to do with tsunamis, mind you--just because people have mentioned that they like "woe" in the Lost recaps and such. Maybe another design could be "OH NOES". I'd mark up all the items one dollar, maybe two. All the money would go to charity. But see, each design would have a different substore, and you could say, "This month, all profits go to Doctors Without Borders for tsunami relief." So you could end up supporting different things at various times, as you felt the need.

(By the way: I didn't come up with "woe" and "OH NOES"--they're just kind of common slang--and I could certainly never take money made off something that... well, simple. Like, I didn't think of it, and I'm not contributing an original art design or anything. The only reason to do this is for charity.)

So, after those two, what I want to know from y'all is: Which lines from my journal/movie parodies/TV recaps do you think would work well on merchandise (FOR CHARITY)? We would have to step carefully--I know that all character names in LOTR and Harry Potter are trademarked to high heaven, but you can't trademark a name like "Jack," I wouldn't think, so "Captain Doctor Hero Jack" would be fine. "Phantom of the Fiction Workshop" is trickier, because I don't know how much of the whole Phantom of the Opera thing is public domain because of the age of the original novel, and how much is trademarked because of Andrew Lloyd Webber. But I figure, anything you think would look good on a mug or a sticker or a t-shirt, let's try it.

(I would encourage anyone else to look through their journal and open a shop of their own, too. I'm not doing it because I think my writing is all that great--I'm doing it because I can, basically.)

To that end, does anyone know some good free-for-commercial-use fonts off the top of their head? I've gone hunting for them before, and it's incredibly time-consuming, so if anyone has a good recommendation at their fingertips, that'd be great. So, comments: lines you would actually be willing to pay to have on a mug, and good fonts that can be used for commercial products. At this point, proceeds would go towards tsunami relief (probably Doctors Without Borders) and 4christina.org.

Deadlines - meh! My Dad's an author, and I don't think he's ever met a deadline.

Music to my ears, man.

And I mean--I know; writers are infamous as a breed for not meeting deadlines. I think my fear is not so much that this is a terrible, terrible, unheard-of sin, as it's a luxury they're not going to feel like they want to give a first-timer.

Can't help you on the fonts...I generally use ones off the font websites which are probably copyrighted. However, I do think that WTF or OMG would be excellent slogans for shirts which would be popular no matter what: you could sell those, and have the profits go to the tsunami relief without having to convince a lot of assholes that it's worth it.

Me? Total Lost junkie. Hee. <3

They need to understand that creativity isn't a computer you can dial into. The Muses in Greek mythology were personifications for a reason - they had thoughts and emotions and agendas of their own. So does yours.

I'm sure you could've gotten done on-time, but it wouldn't have been *complete* work. It wouldn't have been done to *your* satisfaction. And *we* would've been disappointed in the end result.

So tell the deadlines where to stick their memos. *nod*

I'm very fond of the handwriting fonts at Font Garden (http://www.fontgarden.com). (Scroll to the bottom for the "handwriting gallery" link) The site host makes them herself, they are free for non-commercial use, and they're fairly unusual. She does request donations for commercial use, however, she's donating part of her profits to tsunami relief at the moment. I suspect if you ask, she'd probably be willing to let you use them for your nonprofit shirts.

That said, I don't know if it counts as "commercial" use if you donate the profits to charity - that might count as "non-profit" use, which most freeware fonts DO allow.

Font Garden also has archived freeware/shareware fonts she's culled from elsewhere. I believe she's pretty careful to make sure of the font-provenance, which means most (if not all) of the fonts she archives retain their copyright notification in the zipfiles. It's a pain to dl and then have to check the file, but the readme's are usually pretty clear on usage.

I don't know much about copyrights, but I would pay good money for a shirt that said, "Not idly do the leaves of Driveshaft fall."

and I'd also love a shirt that said,
"Frank + Hidalgo = 4EVA!!1" but I dunno if you could get away with that one... ^_^

Great idea though! If it happens (which I have no doubt) I'll try and contribute!

I don't know why, but for some reason, I could totally go for a shirt that had "ZOOM! VEER! DEATH-DEFY!" on it... I know you can't put "Knight Bus" on there, but I would find it funny regardless. And I would totally pay for a "woe" or "OH NOES" shirt.

About fonts... that's a toughie. I've got tons from making icons and such, but I can only think of a few good ones off the top of my head...

A couple recommendations from me would be:
--Dirty Headline, or 4990810 (yes, that is the font name)
--Mumsies
--Crossword Bill
--timtastic!
--Trajax (great, clean, all caps font)
--Felix Titling (same as above)
--Angelina
--Marita Script

I'd try for more, but they start to look pretty similar after that. Hope I was of some help, if any.

What a great idea, though! Gotta love CafePress. 'Tis magic.

Gah. The woes of writing for a deadline. I've done it am doing it (not professionally, just essay wise. Ended up not getting my degree and wow, am I an encouraging example or what?)and entered a place where it's just. not. happening.

However, your situation is different yeah? Your publishing company *wants* you to finish this book, for one thing because they want the money that it will garner. And, since they're used to authors, I'm certain that they know that sometimes inspiration doesn't work on schedule.

Also, I'd totally pay for things that said something on the variety of "Cousin. He's my cousin. Cousin. Totally my cousin. In conclusion: Cousin."! or "Smurfalicious"

Heck, good thinking - I'd pay good money for a shirt with the "Cousin" comment on it ... that line still cracks me up; I watched the movie with my cousin last night (she, uneducated little thing, has never read Troy in 15 Minutes), and she kept giving me wierd looks when I was rolling on the foor laughing during the Achilles-Patroclus scenes :p

I've had a CafePress store (http://www.cafepress.com/crimsonquill) for a couple of years (all profits are donated to the American Cancer Society, btw.) and I've never had anybody say anything to me about font use. I've used a bunch of freeware fonts.

I'm with whoever said that donating to charity is covered under non-commercial use. CafePress has really strict TOS, so I would think they'd crack down on that severely, if it wasn't permitted.

(Also, I draw, so I could help you with the "Heroine Addict" t-shirt, if you decide to go with that.)

Wow I had no idea those cafepress stores' merchandise cannot contain trademarked lines or fonts. Because I know a lot of fansites that violate that rule.

But well, if you know someone artistic, or can do calligraphy and different kinds of styled lettering who'd be willing to help, I bet you can come up with something creative, and that would be okay to use right?

Date: 2005-01-03 07:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Yeah--you can't use anything that you don't hold the rights to (original art, designs, and writing) or that isn't in the public domain. Now, with as many users as they have, I'm sure there's a lot they don't notice. I'd just rather do things on the up-and-up from the start, because with my luck, I'd be the one to get busted.

First off, you can probably get away with a lot 'cause, well, straight parody gets around the copyright laws pretty handily, and that's what most of the stuff you'd use is. As I mentioned above, the names and major plot points from Troy (or King Arthur, for that matter, but it's not as popular as Troy) are safely in the public domain.

I would do terrible things for a shirt that said 'Phantom of the Fiction Workshop' on one side and 'Writing the Novellas of the Niiiiight' on the other. Could that possibly be arranged?

Also, 'cousins'. Totally cousins.

In conclusion: cousins shirt, please.
