Dec. 29th, 2004 10:01 pmToday's horoscope: You know exactly what you want. Now all you need is a plan to achieve it. Word, Horoscope of Irony.
Throat still sore; ran a mild fever part of the day. In addition to my mint hot chocolate, which tastes like Thin Mints and would be totally awesome if they'd just dial down the peppermint a little, I also have Rudolph's Favorite Chocolate Creamy Cocoa, which is good but also adorable. In fact, I'm starting to panic because I think I'm going to run out pretty soon. Durrrr. I'll have to go back to Smith's and see if they have any more.
shoukinkasegi totally made my day with this: "Birmingham's got book smarts. A 2004 'Most Literate Cities' study from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater reported recently that of the 79 American cities with populations of more than 200,000, Birmingham ranked 18th - beating cities such as New York (49th), Chicago (58th) and Los Angeles (68th)." I'm not saying that we don't have a lot to work on down here, but don't ever let anyone tell you that Birmingham is a town full of hayseeds, because it's not. What we mostly got the ranking for is our vast array of bookstores and libraries, thank you very much--there's still a lot of work to be done with adult literacy programs, but if you can read (and I assume that, if you're on my journal, you... can), you would enjoy Birmingham.
Meanwhile, I've fallen behind on several things--the 4christina.org fundraising being one of them. Well, rather, tallying the fundraising--y'all are sending the money directly to Christina, and that's what's important. You can help the family out whenever and as often as you want, but for the purposes of a new "Fifteen Minutes," I'm closing the tally on January 1. (Go here if you'd still like to donate, and keep in mind my whole "one dollar makes a difference" philosophy. Please make sure you log your donation in the for-my-eyes-only poll.) Also, Jillian tells me that her father--that would be Mr. Christina--has lost his relief job and is taking a big pay cut, as they were fearing he would. My mother's offered to finish tallying the donations, so I'll be able to tell y'all whether we made our goal or not. You can also pre-order Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince through the 4christina.org Amazon link.
As for the promised fundraiser "Fifteen Minutes," it's a dead heat between Snicket and Phantom. Seriously, it's a difference of one vote.
As for the Asian death toll, Yahoo headlines are saying that it's up past 77,000 now, and... I don't know. I feel like we ought to be doing the whip-round of all time for this, but... I can't spearhead this one. I'm exhausted and buried under work. If someone can come up with a cohesive plan to raise money, a few distinct places to donate--in fact, I think I saw it pointed out on
anne_jumps's journal that none of the big bottled water companies are donating anything, and water is exactly what people over there need right now. Maybe a letter/email-writing campaign?--I would post it and pimp it to high heaven. But that someone in charge can't be me right now.

Date: 2004-12-29 08:32 pm (UTC)He is a Navel Officer, Lt. Commander - his ship is now anchoring off the shore of Sri Lanka - they are part of the relief effort.
I DO know that the American Red Cross is there and they do need help.
Maybe we here on LJ can do a fund raiser?
Let me know how I can help.
BTW - seems you've been sick as long as I have - have you checked with your doc?? They have me on MAJOR antibiotics now (can you say *urp*?)

Date: 2004-12-29 08:39 pm (UTC)The mint hot chocolate was a gift--it's the Williams-Sonoma (http://ww1.williams-sonoma.com/cat/pip.cfm?sid=WSW3M32CKHQHBZZKYKEC4ADFOGPRT9BV200412292036&pkey=xsrd0m1%7C15%7C0%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C%7Chot%20chocolate&gids=fd280&cmsrc=sch) stuff. It's apparently actual dark chocolate shavings that you melt in hot milk.

Date: 2004-12-29 08:44 pm (UTC)mmmm that sounds SO good! my friend used to work at a cafe and we used to sneak over there when we were copy editors and she'd make me this amazing coffee drink that tasted JUST like a thin mint (girl scout) cookie! she just recently got back from studying abroad and i asked her about how to make the drink and she said it was something she made up and the people who work there now probably won't know what it is. which made me sad. but won't stop me from trying to order it!

Date: 2004-12-29 08:40 pm (UTC)I wonder how Seattle did in that study. Wait, is Seattle's population more that 200,000? (God, I am so dumb.) *wanders off to Google it*
SHITHELLDAMN I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I WANT THE LEMONY SNICKET M15M. Ummm. *stops complaining* Yeah. Anyway.

Date: 2004-12-30 03:28 am (UTC)We'll get thru this, we've done it before, I just wasn't so sick then, so it may take a little more hard work but we're not afraid of work!
We'll do what we can and go from there. I have a deep faith that we will get through this somehow.
Thank you for your love and compassion! Christina

Mostly just information round ups, but I'd already been researching the water idea, and I can't find any information about whether or not the companies are donating. So far I have a list of companies to contact, and as I find the information, I'm adding addresses/contact information, and will copy my letter there, and any responses.

Date: 2004-12-29 11:11 pm (UTC)2. I recently returned home from college to discover that my Dad's new favorite show is... Lost.
3. Lots of people have mentioned donating to Red Cross, which I would guess is probably the safest bet. Just for information there's an article here (http://www.nbc6.net/news/4033603/detail.html) about donation scams that people should watch out for.
4. Please oh please do Phantom for the M15M. I've seen it twice already, and I love it, but I agree that it would be WAY easier to make fun of than Lemony Snicket. There is just so much to work with...

Date: 2004-12-30 04:02 am (UTC)My whole family has had this bug you are now suffering with so, I can really sympathize! I do hope you get some rest and enjoy that minty chocolate!
And thanks for the link about the site again.
Yes, Larry lost his relief position and along with it a pay cut so it will be even more difficult financially than even before all this fundraising started, but we're trying to see what else we can do to try to help ourselves.
It's a difficult time with not many options and a lot of difficult decisions so, I'm writing a lot of letters (don't think I'll get too far but I'm trying anything at this point) and we'll brainstorm to see what else can be done.
Right now there is so much need around the world due to this latest tragedy that I realise that it is a lot to ask of others to help. So, we are trying to figure out ways to help ourselves the best we can. We are so very grateful for all the help everyone has given us along the way!!
Get some rest and we do look forward to the next m15m. And personally pulling for Phantom!
Hugs, Christina
