Dec. 21st, 2004 12:34 amHappy birthday to
emargaret, The Lovely Emily! (Oh dear--it's after midnight. That was supposed to be for 12/20.)
Book not going so well today (er, yesterday). Upset stomach, think it was something I ate, slept a lot. Stuck on several scenes I just don't know what to do with. Like, deaths and things that aren't really "funny" per se--or were funny before I got there ("I ain't droppin' no eaves!"). Sigh.
Random things running through my head:
Something really disturbing I got from
shoiryu: camps that end up killing kids in the name of discipline.
New Goblet of Fire pics!
Also: Rowling has officially finished the sixth book.
The fuck? Why is my name in the database at all?
I don't get to travel much:

create your own personalized map of the USA
or write about it on the open travel guide

create your own visited country map
or check our Amsterdam travel guide
Now I am off to do midnight laundry.

Date: 2004-12-21 02:15 am (UTC)I've heard horror stories about those boot camps before. I'm extremely lucky I'm not a decade younger or I'd probably have wound up at one; as it is I did get sent to a "therapy camp" for three summers where I was physically abused (not brutal violence type stuff, but sufficiently unpleasant).

Date: 2004-12-20 10:44 pm (UTC)"Camps"=During my sophomore year of High School one of my closest friends was sent away to a Mormon/Christian Prison Camp in Utah... a few boys have died there, but he made it out, and with loads of issues over it. His parents wanted to eliminate the questioning, thinking, spiritual individual, and they succeeded: they got a tattooed, angry, adult son. This sort of things makes me seethe with rage over the self-righteousness of it all..

In other news, I don't get to travel much either, more's the pity.

And the utter look of disgust on her face has driven me to hilarious tears. Ron, oh Ron darling, so many things wrong with that robe.
Made. My. Day.

Date: 2004-12-21 06:13 am (UTC)On the advance Goblet of Fire news:
...
Having watched Emma Watson's Hermione in the previous HP movies, I consider her endearingly cute, in the little sister/cousin/next-door neighbor way. After seeing those pictures, though...
My, how fast the kids have grown up. ^^
And Ron's robes look like crap. I hope they decide to change it to something less distracting. :p

Date: 2004-12-21 06:19 am (UTC)Also, don't know if you knew, but they're currently working on a sequel for "Elizabeth" as well. It's called Golden Age. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414055/)
As you can imagine, this has been a pretty darn exciting week for
geeks likeme. :DRe: the fun and frisky torture camps

And she says this without irony. That's what's really scary. I was under the impression that inalienable meant there was no "earning" involved. Scarier still when you consider that one of the girls was there because she was depressed after being raped.

Yarha, Considering the Source

Date: 2004-12-21 10:41 am (UTC)Not by much. There have been several articles about the same place in the NY Times over the past couple of years citing similar stories.
See here: http://tinyurl.com/6n9j8
(You have to buy the articles to see the whole thing, but the abstracts give a good idea of what's been happening.)
There's also this old article from the Guardian:

Date: 2004-12-21 11:56 am (UTC)- Although the article also reminds me (perhaps inappropriately) of the movie "But I'm a Cheerleader." *chuckle*
- Doesn't Ron look wonderful in his robes? It makes me think he should be playing a big dusty organ with a candelabra on it.
- Vladimir has informed me that you and he are going to be traveling next summer. I have already guaranteed him the tour of Exciting DC Life. Whee!
