Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] emargaret, The Lovely Emily! (Oh dear--it's after midnight. That was supposed to be for 12/20.)

Book not going so well today (er, yesterday). Upset stomach, think it was something I ate, slept a lot. Stuck on several scenes I just don't know what to do with. Like, deaths and things that aren't really "funny" per se--or were funny before I got there ("I ain't droppin' no eaves!"). Sigh.

Random things running through my head:

Something really disturbing I got from [livejournal.com profile] shoiryu: camps that end up killing kids in the name of discipline.

New Goblet of Fire pics!

Also: Rowling has officially finished the sixth book.

The fuck? Why is my name in the database at all?

I don't get to travel much:

create your own personalized map of the USA
or write about it on the open travel guide

create your own visited country map
or check our Amsterdam travel guide

Now I am off to do midnight laundry.

So tell me, are you doubling over in laughter over Ron's robes right?

Bless his heart, yes. I do like what they did with the "dress robes" in general--I was having a really hard time imagining them when I read the book, probably because I was imagining stereotypical "Merlin" type robes instead.

I'm ambivalent about the dress robes... I don't know if I agree with how tuxedo-ish they look. But Ron's certainly are horrific.

I've heard horror stories about those boot camps before. I'm extremely lucky I'm not a decade younger or I'd probably have wound up at one; as it is I did get sent to a "therapy camp" for three summers where I was physically abused (not brutal violence type stuff, but sufficiently unpleasant).

Nearly died of JOY! when I solved the riddles on her site... I'm pondering staying up all night to get the news of the release date...

"Camps"=During my sophomore year of High School one of my closest friends was sent away to a Mormon/Christian Prison Camp in Utah... a few boys have died there, but he made it out, and with loads of issues over it. His parents wanted to eliminate the questioning, thinking, spiritual individual, and they succeeded: they got a tattooed, angry, adult son. This sort of things makes me seethe with rage over the self-righteousness of it all..

I think during serious scenes a good thing to do is cut to the audience response to what's going on. No idea about the already-funny scenes, though. and feel free to ignore me entirely. (:

OMG those people sen their daughter to a boot camp place after she was date-raped?

I hope they were driven out of their town and stoned in the dump. Bastards.

In other news, I don't get to travel much either, more's the pity.

As for the camp thing. Reminds me of a book called The Grounding Of Group 6 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/080505085X/qid=1103614903/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/103-6351057-4969441?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)

I still have that book somewhere. Remember Mrs. Ripple? (Or was is Mrs. Cone?) The one who wouldn't swear and taught I believe English? I loved hating her so</i. much, even though she wasn't a prominent character in the story.

Boot camp for a positive attitude? My parents are concerned about my happiness, and my mom seems to think i'm perpetually depressed, but that would definitely not make me happier. I mean, things like hanging out with friends and writing are for that.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the thumbnail of the Harry/Hermione:

Harry: Quiet! I'm practicing my teenage angst!

And the utter look of disgust on her face has driven me to hilarious tears. Ron, oh Ron darling, so many things wrong with that robe.

Has anyone got the answers for the riddles on JKR's site, for those of us too tired/dumb/lazy to figure them out, do you know?

Never mind me. Despite being tired, lazy, and plain slow, I got a couple four of the six after a bit of thought, and just googled (because my memory is so short) the two I couldn't remember/figure out. Whee.

Oh! Well done! See, like me, lol, you could do it in the end. I think there are some websites around the place (Cleo may have even linked to one herself) that show the actual "prize" message from a screenshot. http://www.hpana.com/imageviewer.cfm?nid=18450&f=letter.jpg <-- in case no one linked to it, or you hadn't already found it :)

Or rather, I see you got the answer to number one, did you want hints for the others? (You seem to be doing quite well, though - just keep jogging your memory). The two I had to google where Hermione's Patronus form (because I am waiting for a particular cover of GoF to come out before I buy the book, so I haven't read it recently) and Ron's least favourite sandwich filling (which after I saw some screen caps from the first movie, I was reminded <-- the scene where he and Harry are in the train for the first time, and Harry buys the entire food cart because poor Rononly has his icky sandwich and looks so depressed about it).

The link about the camp made me think Battle Royale for some reason. I fear for our successors. :(

On the advance Goblet of Fire news:

...

Having watched Emma Watson's Hermione in the previous HP movies, I consider her endearingly cute, in the little sister/cousin/next-door neighbor way. After seeing those pictures, though...

My, how fast the kids have grown up. ^^

And Ron's robes look like crap. I hope they decide to change it to something less distracting. :p

Wee! GoF pics and a release date all in the span of 24 hours? Be still my beating heart!

Also, don't know if you knew, but they're currently working on a sequel for "Elizabeth" as well. It's called Golden Age. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414055/)

As you can imagine, this has been a pretty darn exciting week for geeks like me. :D

"You are stripped of your freedom here and take pride in it when you earn it back," she says.

....

And she says this without irony. That's what's really scary. I was under the impression that inalienable meant there was no "earning" involved. Scarier still when you consider that one of the girls was there because she was depressed after being raped.

In re: kid camps. The link is from nospank.net, and hence most likely biased. I'd take it with a grain of salt, as they're prolly skewing information.

Preferably, a grain of salt on the rim of a large margarita.

Not by much. There have been several articles about the same place in the NY Times over the past couple of years citing similar stories.

See here: http://tinyurl.com/6n9j8

(You have to buy the articles to see the whole thing, but the abstracts give a good idea of what's been happening.)

There's also this old article from the Guardian:

- That is v. disturbing about those camps. Just the thought of being so restricted makes me shudder.
- Although the article also reminds me (perhaps inappropriately) of the movie "But I'm a Cheerleader." *chuckle*
- Doesn't Ron look wonderful in his robes? It makes me think he should be playing a big dusty organ with a candelabra on it.
- Vladimir has informed me that you and he are going to be traveling next summer. I have already guaranteed him the tour of Exciting DC Life. Whee!

Tranquility Bay is just one of several "camps" that company operates but it is definitely the worst of the group because of it's location and the lax laws of the country.
