Now is not the time for writer's block. Now is not the time for writer's block. Now is not the time for writer's block.

From the latest Harper Collins newsletter:

HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION FOR THOSE IN THE NEW YORK AREA!

If you live anywhere near New York, you should also be sure to avoid the following dreadful occurrence.

Lemony Snicket in "A Very Fortunate Event"

365 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street in Manhattan
Lemony Snicket will be making a rare appearance to discuss A Series of Unfortunate Events. Order tickets at nytimes.com/alweekend or by calling 1-888-NYT-1870.

NYers, I trust you not to let me down.

In other news: Ooooooooo--Ursula K. LeGuin, she mad. Can't say I blame her, either.

I'd be ticked, too... I saw that response from her a couple of days ago and it's why I'm not watching Earthsea. I figure I'll just read the books someday (as soon as I find the time...) lol

Heh, I love it when writers get their bitch on about movie directors & the like stealing their digs. :)

Hehe. I wouldn't be watching it, but my roommate wanted to. And when 2 minutes into the movie, you already know something has gone terribly wrong... I've only read about the first four chapters... and we've been facepalming since. Heh.

I wrote about my response to LeGuin's post over on my LJ, but... yeah. I can't blame her either. I think that there isn't going to be a very good response from the Earthsea fanbase, either. Those are the kind of books which you need to be really careful about "doing" -- you're better off to do them right, or not at all.

I'm going to try to watch Earthsea. After I drink some beer. It may help. I haven't read the books yet, I'm the next in line for a loan of the first in the series.

I'm curious if the lack of clue I will have in watching the movie will help with my enjoyment of it.

Ursula L Guin scares the SHIT out of me. I dream of meeting her and scattering rosepetals and stuff, but she'd just bite my fucking head off.

She's a type of brilliant angry woman that I admire, but fear. She's like a thrashing wire in a tornado's wake. Yeeps.

Thanks for the Ursula K. LeGuin link. I can't blame her either. Saw a preview for "Earthsea" a couple days ago, and wow, it looks B-A-D. If I wrote those books and then had the filmmakers talk out of their asses about my supposed "authorial intent," I'd be bringing the hate too.

I was all excited and hopeful about "Earthsea" initially. Then I saw that Ogion, the wise mentor who teaches by his actions and not by either Yoda-like lectures or sarcastic comments, was being played by Danny freakin' Glover. And then I saw that Tenar/Arha was being played by Lana Lang. And then I read some article that mentioned the tragic love story, and I started banging my head against my desk. No! No tragic love story! This is not "Romeo and Juliet With Magic on the Archepelago!" AAAAAARGH!

In short, not watching it. Once again, another fantasy classic is ruined by bad TV adapting. There should just be a law that only Peter Jackson can adapt fantasy novels now.

And I'm certain it's all the fault of VFD that I shall never make it to NYC in order to give my important information to Mr. Snicket. Woe.

I didn't even receive the HC newsletter. :( Not like I'd be able to go or anything.

I'm reading the second book in the Earthsea Cycle now and I'm not enjoying it a whole lot. Certainly never pictured pasty Shawn Ashmore as Ged. And let's not even talk about the casting of Kristin Kreuk as Tenar. Ugh! Thanks for the link to LeGuin.

I had to read all of the Earthsea books for my Culture and the Text - Wizardry and Magick seminar and while I really disliked them, I understand why the fans (and the author) are angry. I was going to download the movie (miniseries?) just to see if I could get into it, but now I'm not sure if I should bother. There's nothing worse than a shoddy movie adaptation.

the Earthsea miniseries is like it was written by somebody who read it in middle school, didn't really get it, read a couple other books at the same time, and then wrote a script 30 years later based on what he remembered. Completely missed the boat.

I fail to see the point in movie adaptations that completely change the original story. Not only are the fans outraged, but those who would have been attracted to the books after seeing the movie are completely misguided. Silly film makers.

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLEO! May your day be blessed with inspiration and a good blue-and-bronze Ravenclaw scarf.

Exactly. See, I can understand changes that have to do with the change from book to film, or time constraints, or story clarity, or whatever, but... if it's just different from the get-go, what's the point?

(Thanks!)
