Eee! Today has been a good day, despite not getting much of worth done. I'm still struggling through Samson Agonistes, which we have to read (cold, no class discussion) for the final. But I did get an early Christmas present from Vladimir in the mail today, and it happens to be the Sideshow Weta Galadriel bust. It's a lot smaller than you'd think (which is a good thing)--maybe eight inches high. Now, Vladimir is the real Weta collector here (you should hear him go on about the blissful smell of polystone), but he did point out that it was a limited-edition piece and if anyone should have a Galadriel bust, it should be me (see icon). Tis verreh pretteh and looks very nice on the shelf over my desk with the dolls. (Galadriel Doll approves).

Also: I have ordered Vladimir's Second Christmas Present, which will be very exciting. Whee!

Meanwhile, tis the season of corporate gifts. The first gift basket Mom's brought home had a box of Poppycock (basically caramel corn), a box of Ghirardelli chocolate with carmelized almonds (which she prompty absconded with), and a tin of those Danish butter cookies that you see so often near the holidays. I just suddenly realized how good those cookies are a couple of years ago, so this is one of the little things I look forward to muchly each Christmas.

Back to reading and recording: I don't know what the deal is with the sound quality, but the "Phantom of the Fiction Workshop" clip is awful. The New Orleans posts were recorded on a much less spiffy Nokia over the summer, and they sound crystal clear. I get a brand new future-sleek Samsung, and you can't hear for shit. So I don't know. I thought my new computer came with a microphone... I'll look into that, and see if I can't record something on a piece of equipment other than a cell phone. I like doing readings, though--particularly when I'm alone in the room and no one's staring at me--so I may try to do more. I would do some of the "Movies in Fifteen Minutes," but... really, I don't know how long you can go on muttering the speaker's name and then reading the line. I heard Horton Foote--or maybe it was Shelby Foote. It was a Foote. I know that much--read a new play he'd written at a writer's conference a few years back, and it was excruciating. He read the whole thing, and he read that whole thing thusly: "Alice:howareyou? John:I'mfine. Alice:Johnit'sgoodtohearthat." I can't read for pages on end like that, nor would I inflict it on you.

P.S. No, I will not be performing "Novellas of the Night" for anyone ever any time soon.

You should totally voice-read the Silmarillion. That has to be the hardest book ever to read outloud. xD I want to see how a Lost recap would go through voice-recordings.

Locke: You know what's happening.
Kate: Uh, no, I don't, because if I did, I WOULDN'T BE ASKING YOUR CREEPY ASS KTHNX.

BUT!! The bust is gorgeous! I love Weta, I think they're fantastic. By the way, I'm sending out Christmahanakwanziwhatever cards, do you want one?

Hee. I liked the Silmarillion a lot, but I'd need Vladimir to coach me on pronunciation. Actually, I think I could handle a Lost recap, though. None of that pesky script format.

I actually really really like mail and Chrismukkazaa cards, but I feel bad, because I can't do any this year in return. If you really want to send me one, though, I'm going to get a PO box on Thursday, and I'll post that address so people can fill up my new box if they want.

Awesome, I just got like.. two free packages of cute cards, and I love getting mail, so I thought I'd send them to all my online favorites!

Definitely put the Silmarillion on your list though! At least a chapter. OMG and read it in the Galadriel voice!! AHH OR!! You should do your own recording of the intro to the Fellowship, in her voice! So much exclamations!!

WETA will be the Art Guests of Honor at Arisia in Boston in January, just in case anyone wants to see. I'm a volunteer for the con. Fun!

"No sir, despite your fantastically accurate Scruffy Strider costume, you may not bring weapons or belt pouches into the art show. This has been a rule for years."

"But my authenticity!"

"No. Leave it on the table. And the camera, for that matter."

"Damn you minion of Sauron."

"Yes sir, I've heard it already. Just check your things and you can go in."

"But-"

Argh. It'll be fun, really, I just know I'll get a few. ^_^

Awwwwesome. I've always wanted to go to a con, but 1) I don't know that I can afford it and 2) I'm sure as hell not going by myself. You'll have to bring back a full report for us.

Man, once the book is published you might be able to get billing at cons. I mean, check out the Special Guest Arisia's got this year. Harry Knowles? Pshah. Heck, if I can, I'll see if I can get you rec'd to someone on committee. Services to fandom or some such.

Hey, I got here from Lost people--your recaps are hilarious; thanks for sharing them!

Also, that bust is gorgeous. It's a good thing you have it, because they're sold out now. Getting them through resale is never are great as being the first and only owner. Yay for you!

Just out of curiosity, which artist sculpted the Galadriel bust? I don't see that anywhere on Sideshow's website. Thanks.

I thought my new computer came with a microphone... I'll look into that, and see if I can't record something on a piece of equipment other than a cell phone.

If your computer didn't come with a microphone, headsets are very inexpensive at Wal-Mart (10-14$US), or just plain microphones are even cheaper (9-11$US). And for an excellent, easy-to-use sound recorder that lets you convert to .MP3 format (v. cool), use audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). I love that program, and so will you.

Hope this helps!

Assuming I get audio books (sometime wayyyy in the future when I have, y'know, books out), hell, I want me to read 'em, too. But that's mostly because I'm a control freak and wouldn't want anyone else to. : )

*fnarr* I should have read this before asking in the other comment what he got you - hehe. Dumb me.
I think it's a v. good thing those busts aren't bigger - I mean, they are lovely, but they, um...are also a little creepy. V. lifelike :)

Alice:howareyou? John:I'mfine. Alice:Johnit'sgoodtohearthat.
Hehehehe. I know some people who always read like that.
It's like, it's not a race, people!

Yeah, I didn't like the busts when I saw them on the site, because I imagined people having these huge, two-foot tall, ultra-creepy disembodied heads lined up in their rec rooms. It's actually really nice at the size it is.

The worst part about Some Foote's reading? He really did run each speaker's name in with the dialogue like that. It was confusing for the first five minutes, and just plain annoying for the hour after that.

Is it okay to make comments even though I don't know you well, and just find you clever and interesting? I will pretend it is.

I would do some of the "Movies in Fifteen Minutes," but... really, I don't know how long you can go on muttering the speaker's name and then reading the line.

You could do what I used to do and recruit your family and friends to read for different characters. Of course, that was in middle school, and also always turned into half script reading, half crazy laughter. And those scripts weren't even funny. Alright, maybe not such a good idea.

Umm, I've been forced to read about half the posted m15m's out loud to my family. Is difficult. Is much fun, but is difficult. The worst was trying to make the monosyllabic bit of PoA flow, be funny, and still make sense.

Anyway, we love you Cleo. =)We eagerly await the book.

I'm not nuts about the bust myself. It looks kinda but not really like her to me. Plus something about the set of her shoulders and the tilt of her neck makes it looks like she's really wearing a hoodie and has her hands tucked into it, only you can't see.

You like those cookies? Bleh, I say. If I get any, they're yours.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Heh. I really, really didn't like it the first time I saw it (many months ago), but the other busts' likenesses are so terrible that I began to see the upside. It actually looks a lot nicer in person. Also, the way they glazed her eyes, they always have a twinkle of light in them. It's kinda spooky.

COOKIES YAY!

Funky! It kindadoesn'tlooklikeher but nonetheless, funky! ^.^

And I would LOVE to hear you doing m15m readings! (You may have to on tours or whatever anyway.) It's always so much cooler when the author does it, because they know where the emphasis is supposed to lie. Although, speaking from experience with your scripts (1 friend was too lazy to move FIVE FEET to the computer, & then she made me read it to everyone else. *sweatdrop* Sooooore throat. Very sore throat.) it is really difficult to do the

RON: Your cat ate my rat and I HATE you!!

HERMIONE: My cat did NOT eat your rat, and I hate YOU!!

name thing continuously. The 1wordperline! part in PoA loses it's effect after a while, and (also in PoA) the time sequence with the italics and everything just goes way over everybody's heads. I'm not critising, you didn't write it to be read, I'm just warning. It's difficult to get those snappy lines out.

*hangs head* The other problem can be when you get way too into it, and stop paying attention to what you're saying so that everything becomes emphasised and you end up turning it from a very simple:

THE WHOMPING WILLOW

RON: Scabbers! There you ... etc.

to

THE WHOMPING WILLOW: Ron!

And everybody laughs at you.

*is shamefaced* But it'd be so cool if someone could perform this or something. ^.^

Hee. I definitely think I could record a read-along version for the internet(s)--just skip the NAME: part, because theoretically you could listen to it while you were following along. It would also help out the whole monosyllable part in POA, which--yeah, is a big problem.

Cool! *waits enthusiatically and prods occaisionally* XP

OH! Wouldn't it be awesome it someone could actually remake the movies this way! Or do a play! Or ... something. *thinks* OK, I guess I should replace "awesome" with "brainbendingly hard". But hey. ^.^

You know, it's sort of my fantasy to see the original actors play out M15M scenes, on the original sets if possible. The problem with this, of course, is that by the time I see the movie and parody it, the sets and costumes are long gone. (We'll leave the issue of "You are a nobody and no one in Hollywood cares" for another day.) The only cast you could theoretically even do it with might be the Harry Potter people, and... yeah, that's not happening.
