Phone posts!
Dec. 7th, 2004 12:03 amGoing through some old phone posts I made when I was in New Orleans (this past July, because I am a moron), and I realized I actually have the proper pronunciation of "OMG" recorded within them, for those of you who may have wondered. They're all brief--I think the longest is less than three minutes--and I'm only reposting the better ones.
"I've think I've been on zoo trains faster than this"
"We're here on the Lovely Car of Snacking"
"It was ooh--ooh--not--ooh"
"Whaaaat? You don't have change? You don't have TWO DOLLARS? WHAT. EVER."
"I can't even imagine what it must be like for Yankees to come down here and just be like, 'OMG the heat is soooo oppressive, ahhh!' "
I think I must be the only person ever who isn't freaked out by the sound of her own voice. I'm always kind of fascinated by how different it sounds, rather than horrified. It's me! Yet it's totally not! WEIRD. So if I suddenly start making a lot of phone posts, humor me, okay?
(If it makes you feel any better, I'm totally averse to photographs.)

Date: 2004-12-06 10:53 pm (UTC)What struck me most about your post (apart from reflections about hating my recorded voice) was the fact that you mentioned Romancing the Stone in "the lovely car of snacking"
Awesome.

Date: 2004-12-06 10:59 pm (UTC)Seriously, I live in Kentucky, but in such a place, that at this very moment where I sit, I have two miles and the Ohio river seperating me from Illinois, the midwest!
And yet I get this creepy southern drawl. My accent is worse than that of every other member of my family. Where did it come from?!
You poor little heatstroked person. It gets sooo muggy here. My city is trapped between four rivers (the Ohio, the Mississippi, the Tennessee, and the Cumberland), with 2 sizable lakes. And it's hot, and it rains. So it's always muggy and humid, and insane.
Thank god for central air.

Date: 2004-12-06 11:03 pm (UTC)By the way, yeah, N'awleans it like 10 feet below sea level and is deathly until about November. Sometimes longer.
But when it sinks into the ocean, it won't be so hot anymore.

Date: 2004-12-06 11:11 pm (UTC)I listened to the "What???" entry - and I swear I spit out my tortilla chips when you said, "It tastes like burning."
I don't know if you've seen that episode of the Simpsons or it was just incidental, but that was a Ralph Wiggum line that one of my friends used to quote all the time (as in - "How's the caf food, Pam?" "It tastes like.....buuuuuurning.")
*So it brought back memories*
Also, at one point I was freaked by your voice - b/c you sounded exactly like my sister! (Who is not from the South a'tall.

Date: 2004-12-07 12:25 am (UTC)Ahem. That said, you both have absolutely lovely voices. :)
I'm not freaked out by my own voice, either. Whenever I hear it recorded it mostly amuses me how it sounds exactly like my sister's voice. In addition to looking enough alike to be mistaken for twins All The Freaking Time, people calling the house never know which of us is on the phone.
*contemplates posting recordings of her own voice*

Date: 2004-12-07 01:19 am (UTC)It's odd, because for me most of my LJ friends kind of exist as media phenomena (as in, the media of LJ and the internet, not like, flashy-camera-pictures-on-MTV-Usher-style media), and it's always kind of a mental stretch to look at a picture or hear a voice and realize, These are three-dimensional people.
This makes me sound like some kind of egocentric sociopathic freak, and I don't mean it that way at all. It's just that, with nothing but words and icons, I have to create a little mental squiggle to represent my LJ friends in my head. And then after said squiggles have gotten familiar, I see or hear a part of their actual selves that walk and talk and live wherever they actually are, and I have to kind of tweak the squiggles (tell me that doesn't sound like an obscenity from some obscure British New Wave band's album lyrics from like, 1983 or something) to adjust to this new information.
OK, maybe I am a total freak, come to think of it.
But you have a nice voice, is what I mean to say.

Date: 2004-12-07 07:42 am (UTC)And that's why I'm not too into posting pictures of myself at the moment--I don't feel like I could live up to the awesome-neato Cleo who looks like Galadriel, or cartoon sketches (see default icon). I kind of don't want to take that away from people.
Oddly enough, I don't mind taking whatever voice they imagine away from them. I do wonder what people *thought* I would sound like, though.

Date: 2004-12-07 06:24 am (UTC)I hate hearing the sound of my own voice. Especially on video. I have to do a running narrative for every. little. thing. that's going on.

Date: 2004-12-07 07:29 am (UTC)I remember you going to N'awlins this summer and me being mmmjellus... Must.Go. But upon your recommendation, I think I'll wait until fall-winter-spring. It can get muggy in Oklahoma, but I can't imagine it 24/7, where you can practically see the nasty.

Date: 2004-12-07 12:20 pm (UTC)The Birmingham accent is actually pretty subtle. We can always tell when someone at school (who is from Alabama) is from out of town--the further you get from town, the accent gets way thick way fast.

Date: 2004-12-07 11:47 am (UTC)Ooh, I've been a victim of the blisters between the toes thing. Flip flops will do that to you. Eh.
Whenever I go to Michigan and Ohio to visit family, I die from the heat. And the mugginess! I'm a spoiled little Seattle girl, I guess... if the temperature goes above, like, 85 or so I bitch and whine.
