As a companion to the previous entry: since I'm hounding y'all for family Christmas gift recs, the least I can do is repay the favor. If you're looking for movies or movie-related things (spin-off merchandise like Sister Girl's wand, for example), I can definitely suggest things. I'm pretty good with books. Music, you're shit out of luck. I haven't turned on the radio in something like five years and I'm listening to, like, Whitesnake right now, so... I am not the one you want to ask about the best and brightest new CDs. Books and movies, though, I can probably handle.

ETA: Interesting gift idea I just noticed for the Potter fans: the Alivans.com wands are great and come in a variety of woods and shapes, but they range from $27-65. At Noble Collection, they have replicas of the Prisoner of Azkaban wands (Ron's, Harry's, and Hermione's), which are apparently more intricately sculpted than they were in the previous movies (Hermione's has vines carved on it, and the boys' look more like rough, natural wood). Price? $29.50. Also? The Time Turner is only $49, which is positively inexpensive for these people.

I've yet to see a good blue-and-bronze (not -grey) Ravenclaw scarf, though. Anyone have good recs for Ravenclaw merchandise?

Here's one for you:

The Woman's gone crazy for things Harry Potter, and I was planning on getting her a scarf in addition to the other stuff she's getting for Christmas. Any thoughts as to which scarves are closest to what's worn on the movie without bankrupting me?

From which house, Gryffindor (red and gold)? alivans.com has two styles of scarf--classic style and the Prisoner of Azkaban style (smaller stripes). I think they've only got POA style in Gryffindor and Slytherin (green and silver).

Because she's difficult, I think she's looking at Ravenclaw. Basically, I'm looking for something that's not utter crap that'll please someone who's Potter-struck.

Heh--she's got the same problem I have, which is that I like Ravenclaw best but they have less merchandise (which will change after the fourth movie comes out). The blue and grey scarf is really pretty, but R's colors are actually more blue and *bronze.* I've yet to find a Ravenclaw scarf that's to my liking.

At the same time, you might browse the rest of the site. The wands particularly--Potter fans go nuts for those. They're handcrafted, but not all of them are expensive.

Alternatively, if you're willing to spend a little more money, you might try here: http://www.noblecollection.com/catalog/catalog.cfm?catid=21. I don't know any fan who wouldn't go nuts for a Time Turner, and I think their Harry/Hermione/Ron replica wands are actually less expensive than Alivan's generic wands.

Well, I've looked, but pretty much anywhere you go, if you want the scarf in POA style, they will make it blue and silver, not blue and bronze.

RJK Knits has one for $30 in blue and silver, but the good thing is, if you're a regular knitter (which I, alas, am not), they also sell their patterns. Hrm... Let me look round a bit more...

Nope, still no luck. Browsed Ebay, but all I'm finding is blue-sliver.

Good luck with that, though.

I had to give up and make mine. I can't find much that isn't blue and silver.

I did have a conversation with a salersperson at Hot Topic who agrees that they are weenies for doing mostly Gryffindor and Slytherin and relatively little Ravenclaw, but she agrees that after then next movie there should be more Ravenclaw stuff out. Unfortunately, it's probably going to be blue and silver.

I do admit that blue and silver is prettier--Sister Girl considers herself a Gryffindor the way I think of myself as a Ravenclaw, but even she wanted the blue and silver scarf from Alivan's. It'll be great to finally have some Ravenclaw merchandise once Cho is officially on the movie scene (which sounds weird: "Please, Warner Bros, make something for me to spend my money on!").

I'm in no position to mock

considering that on my errand list is to run by Party City to pick up Chocolate Frogs for the stockings hung on the chimney with care.

I've fallen for the Potter merchandising, hook, line, and checkbook.

Can you recommend a book for a 17-year-old girl who liked those "full-frontal snogging" sort of Bridget Jones Jr. books a few years ago?

If you're wanting something similar, you might try Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. From what I've heard it's a similar series.

www.alivans.com, which has a variety of different woods they make the wands from. Ours came in the other day, and I opened the boxes before I hid them away, and they're really nice. However, the Noble Collection replicas of Ron/Harry/Hermione's wands are actually less expensive, and apparently the wands got a more intricate sculpt for POA--like, Hermione's has vines on it.

If we're talking wands, I must recommend Dragonmother (http://www.dragonmother.com/). Wands starting at around $25, lots of different styles. Beautiful work. I got a wand from there and I love it.

She's not taking orders right now (which obviously doesn't help you for Christmas), but the girl at atypically.knit (http://knit.atypically.net/scarves/hogwarts/) makes some gorgeous, very authentic-looking, hand-knit scarves. They're expensive, but I ordered myself one for last Christmas and I looooooove it. She offers both versions of the Ravenclaw scarf as well as the new PoA-style.

I ordered my nine foot Ravenclaw scarf (blue/gray in my case but they have both styles) from this person a couple of years ago http://uk.geocities.com/shadesh@btinternet.com/scarves/index.html

I love the fact that I can loop it loosely around my neck and the ends still dangle all the way down my torso.

Wait, that doesn't turn it into Hufflepuff does it? I got my colors all mixed round.

Hey Cleo - totally off-topic, but I don't know where else to post. I was wondering if you have seen the new Entertainment Weekly? It's got Lost as the cover story, and alot of juicy pictures and some spoilerage. I saw a bit of the article on their website last week...and now everyone at Barnes and Noble knows my name when I call...but I got it today, finally! I recommend that to Lost fans.

Oh, and I was wondering if you've ever seen Keen Eddie? Again, sorry about the OT post.

Hey, I think I got that in the mail--I was so busy this weekend that I didn't get to read it. Have to figure out where I put that...

Never seen Keen Eddie, but then, I don't watch a whole lot of TV--just a few favorite shows. : )

I think you would love Keen Eddie. It's out on DvD now for about $35 for the whole set, and ya can probably rent it at Blockbuster.

It's a very British comedy, screwball as it gets, I've never seen a show quite like it..oh and it has Mark Valley in it, so bonus points! A recap of that show from ya would be hilarious I think. I am always capturing...er having people over to watch it. I've made a couple of converts ;)

I have a request for the name of a movie ... it's fairly old (b&w) and I think it's English. It features a group of kids/teenagers who discover that their favourite magazine is being used by a bunch of criminals to broadcast news of their plans to different groups around the city ... *Spoiler* I think that the policeman was the head of the crime ring, though I can't be sure ...

My aunt loves this film; we were trying to remember the name of it the other day (but both failed miserably). Any ideas? Thanks :)

This website has a Ravenclaw bronze and blue scarf color combo: http://knit.atypically.net/scarves/ If you click on a style (Hogwarts or POA) and click on house color combinations, you can view it. Bit pricey, though.

Aaaaaaand... I have a question. When I was about 8, so that would make it 1992 or so (but I think the movie was made in the 80's), I saw a movie that I can't for the life of me remember the name of. I had it taped off the TV, but we ended up taping over it. There were a bunch of kids at a summer camp and they didn't get along but were forced to be in the same group (to maintain a healthy plot). I remember that the 'cool' kids put toothpaste or pond water in the bed of one of the kids, they were camping at camp with catching their own food and the dorky guy caught a fish, and they cooked it over a fire. They played the song 'You can't hurry love' during the movie.I know it's not much to go on, but if you could point me in the direction of even what this movie was called, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
