I was on IM with Vladimir and I realized that Yahoo has got to be doing something fun for Halloween, so I go to re-customize my avatar. At first, I thought I should totally be Blackhearted Cap'n Cleo of the Good Ship Split Infinitive.



And then I realized...



I should totally be Cleo Valerious. Dammit! If only I would actually look good in this stuff had thought of this sooner! I have black jeans! I have boots! I could... totally not fish up the rest of the costume, but... I've got the hair! Okay, it's not quite long enough anymore, but I've got the hair, dammit, and you can't take that away from me!



Also, I would like to apologize to anyone that C. to Tha J. O. may have offended last night. I came down off my Butterfinger high and started to wonder what exactly I'd done. Fo shizzle, hodizzle.

I first read about these years ago in Paul Barber's great book Vampires, Burial, and Death. I think the true origin is the way that melons act when they're infested with beetles. Think of it...the insects are inside, eating the sweet flesh, and the melon starts to roll around and make growling noises.... and the populace starts calling them vampiric. What's even sillier though, is that in the same part of the world, they believe in vampiric chicken and vampiric butterflies. (It's in Barber's book!)
