Ah, Sox-Yanks fan wank over at Metaquotes. (The Red Sox have a nation?)

A different perspective on the playoffs: Some anon asked "Sox or Yanks?" a couple of entries back here in my journal, and I honestly sat and stared at the comment for a few minutes trying to figure out the context. I mean, baseball, I know. But I couldn't figure out for the life of me why someone just needed to know my stance on that right at that moment--you might have asked me "Frankenberry or Chocula?" for all the sense it made to me. And that's because I had no idea what was going on--that's how out of it I am.

Besides, I played softball for nine years (I was a catcher. Ruins the knees, it does). Also, I live in the middle of the Auburn-Alabama football rivalry (which I totally don't care about either, and only back Alabama when pressed because both my parents graduated from UA and the colors are much more harmonious. That's the level of my interest, right there). That pretty much fills my lifetime quota of organized sport.

Dude, the Red Sox totally have a nation. I mean, it's just... we're... it... Red Sox NATION, man!

Huh. I think I should try living outside of Boston for a year or so to catch wise to the way things look to the rest of the world.

Well, keep in mind that I am monumentally oblivious to sports, probably because my high school was obsessed with football and I sort of shut my brain off to them as a coping mechanism.

Stay in Boston, it's a happier place. And no one eggs your car if the Red Sox win, and you happen to have a bumper sticker proclaiming your pride in them on your vehicle.

I'm there, I'm wanking, I admit it.

And I've never understood college sports rivalries. I mean... college. :p

Nifty, though, that you played softball.

Seriously, man. And it's a big deal down here--all sorts of chicanery involving bribes to high school seniors to go to this or that alumnus's college and beef up the team. All kinds of crazy shit--not to mention the coach who got fired for taking players to a strip club, if I recall correctly (and I probably don't. Strippers were involved, though).

Eek!

Y'know this is getting kinda weird :) You and I have the same birthday and I played softball for 9 years and I was a catcher and ruined my knees...

I already have a twin sister, maybe you were lost at birth and we're really triplets ;)

Having finally escaped Tuscaloosa, I have strong strong feelings about the whole Bama/Auburn crap. Feelings of disgust, annoyance, and disbelief at how people get so damn worked up about it. Most of the die-hard fans never even went to college anyways.

If it wasn't for my friends list and other message boards, I would have had no idea about this whole Red Sox crap. I actually thought they won the world series. But I guess that's later.

Sports are lame. I don't trust people that run without someone chasing after them.

Gah, I was a catcher for four years (one baseball, three softball). If it weren't for those little triangular-wedge-type-pads-that-attach-to-the-back-of-your-shin-guards I wouldn't be walking today. And I probably owe my life to that helmet/facemask dealie. Oh, it's a dangerous job, but it beats standing around in the outfield looking for interesting looking flying bugs nearby.

One day at practice I wasn't wearing my mask, and I took a foul tip straight between the eyes from four feet away. You can still see the vague imprint of ball stitches between my eyebrows if you look very, very closely.

"Frankenberry or Chocula?"

THANK YOU. Because 99 times out 100, I really don't give a shit about sports, either. And I know in the Deep South, that's kind of like not caring about breathing. You're so cool.

I will care about sports when Quiddich is real.
