This and that:

>> Aww, yay! Those of you who missed the 1979 Dracula the last time it was on AMC--which would be the time I 15M'd it--can catch it again tonight.

(Man. I saw that movie when I was thirteen... a couple of weeks before the Gary Oldman Dracula came out. So it was pretty much my first Dracula movie. Good times.)

>> On the subject of Dracula: I want Van Helsing on DVD so bad. SO BAD. I know it comes out on Tuesday, but--SO BAD.

Look, I'm not going to lie to you. It's not a good movie. I never said it was. In fact, I think I love it because it is bad. Sometimes, you want to go out to a new restaurant with expensive, finely-prepared food that will expand your sensibilities. Sometimes... you want Fritos. I love this movie like Fritos.

>> I dipped my toe back into movie news this morning--I have been so completely out of it the last few months--and found out that New Line has optioned Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, which, oddly enough, Vladimir just sent to me.

>> Speaking of movies: I leave you people alone for a few days weeks months, and you go put Chris Rock in charge of the Oscars. Damn. I should leave you alone more often.

>> HALLOWEEN ON THE LORD'S DAY OH NOES:

In Vestavia Hills, Ala., a suburb of Birmingham, a furor erupts every time Halloween falls on Sunday. Local officials decided not to take a stand this time.

"About 15 years ago, we decided to have Halloween on Saturday instead. People went crazy. We said, `Never again,'" recalled Starr Burbic, longtime secretary to the mayor. "It messed everybody up to move Halloween. Some people don't like having it on a Sunday, but we just couldn't find a way to make everyone happy."

Awwww yeah. Crazy Birmingham represent!

i felt the same way. i want to get this and troy on dvd for this reason.

also, i need to go read your 15MM of Dracula 1979. i just saw it for the first time in august. i liked it but can see where it can easily be made fun of.

Okay, your icon just made me laugh out loud.

I love the Dracula movie too, but... man, it has some nonsensical moments. I wish I had time to go back and revise some of the 15 Minutes, because that one in particular could use some work, but it's okay nonetheless. ;)

Am I wrong for thinking that Hugh Jackman has something to do with it? :D

Hey, I admit my main reason for watching Van Helsing was Kate Beckinsdale and the amazing vampire slut sisters of DOOM.

Guilty as charged. Hell, I was half there for Kate Beckinsale, too--awful accent and bad boob job and everything. I don't know. She still rocks like a rocking thing. Even if she is dead from smush.

I have so many things to rent this weekend, it's not even funny. Van Helsing, The Day After Tomorrow, and I have to find Dracula somewhere. Yes, that's right, I've yet to see any Dracula adaptations. Yes, I have a sad, unfufilled life.

This is OT from your post, but I was wondering: Is Troy near Crazy Birmingham? We're going there on a chorus trip and I'm trying to figure out how long I'll have to be on a bus with Crazy Director. No one around here cares enough about Alabama to have a map...

that New Line has optioned Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell...

Really? Huh. I read an article in the paper about it that said that it was very superfluous and not a very good read at all.

Hell, maybe I'll read the thing before I go see the movie (which I just think I might). I tend to like a lot of stuff critics don't.

Example? The Emperor's New Groove. Boo-ya. *is lame*

My mother's church in Gardendale has a yearly defiant anti-Halloween "fall festival" to "provide children with a safe, Christian alternative to Halloween." Look, guys: you let little kids dress up as superheroes, give them candy, and take them on hayrides on 31th October. Yet you claim it's a "fall fesitival" that has nothing to do with Halloween. You are not fooling anybody. Call it what it is.

"You just don't do it on Sunday," said Sandra Hulsey of Greenville, Ga. "That's Christ's day. You go to church on Sunday, you don't go out and celebrate the devil. That'll confuse a child."

XD I love the inference that it's totally okay to celebrate the devil on Saturday. Or indeed, any other day of the week.

Date: 2004-10-19 04:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] qpdaj.livejournal.com
And how many kids today would have any clue that Halloween has anything to do with "the devil", unless you're out there making a big deal about it? I'd imagine the vast majority think Halloween is all about playing dress-up and getting candy, and there's nothing wrong with that (well, other than encouraging greed and bad eating habits, but that's another debate).

Sure, a lot of Halloween traditions have a historical basis on ancient superstitions, but why bring that up? Why can't you just let the kids have some clean fun? "Celebrating the devil", puh-lease!!!

Date: 2004-10-20 01:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bluemarie.livejournal.com
Absolutely. For god's sake, in America Halloween has about as much to do with the Devil as Easter has to do with Jesus. In the mind of your average child, they're both all about candy, so there's no point in freaking out.

I do love it and all, but the Gary Oldman one is SO. BAD. First we have the Keanu Reeves BAD ACCENT, because it hurt me. Omg... when he said Bukovnia or Bukovina or whatever the fuck? Jesus.

And Gary was so, so delightfully over the top, and not in the cherry topping type way. God, it was... BAD. And they sexed it up massively, which irked me. How many people can Mina hit on, for God's sake?? She's already got Gary and Keanu wrapped around her little finger, so let's throw Anthony Hopkins and his wheelchair at her, too.

Like I said, so bad. But I proudly bought it on DVD the minute I had the cash.

In Mobile they changed Halloween one time because of weather. ?!?!?

Which is particularly amusing now I live in Michigan, where the weather on Halloween is more like December in Mobile.

It's like Alabama's officials don't understand the concept of holidays associated with a date.

The 1979 Dracula is so good. Back when Frank Langella wasn't huge and bald. And I really like Kate Nelligan. And I liked Van Helsing.

Weird.
I live in Birmingham. Some of the best Halloween parties I ever went to as a kid were put on by my church. And we called it Halloween, had haunted houses, dressed up as monsters, ect. Of course, that was back in the 20th Century.
Changing the date is just plain stupid. And for the record, Halloween has nothing to do with Satan. Ignorant twits...
