Oh, by the way, because someone asked about the Peter Pan thing--it's very simple and probably won't happen until early 2005 because I want to finish the book this calendar year, dammit, and avoid Christmas charity fatigue as well. But basically, now that I apparently have a marketable skill, I wanted to do something... well, charitable. Give something back. So it occurred to me: enough people read "Movies in Fifteen Minutes," based on the comments I get, that people could give just a dollar, and we could still do a lot of good. (There were something like 6000 m15m members last time I checked.)

I don't know which charity exactly to do, which is probably a dangerous thing to admit, but I'm really interested in education, of course. I'm not sure what, but it needs to involve education in Alabama, because we're basically #49 on the national list unless Mississippi has a particularly good year, and, let's face it, we need all the help we can get. (I remember an educator coming to my high school and showing us what the kids out in some rural areas have--encyclopedias from 1942. Yikes.) So we're looking at children and education and Alabama.

So that was the theory behind choosing the Peter Pan that came out earlier this year/last year for the parody--it's got the children theme, it's got a Harry Potter connection to bring in a large number of readers, and I think I could do something with it.

The hardest part would be setting it up with the charity and clearing everything--I don't know if this is considered making money off someone else's property, even as a parody, so it may be a no-go and I'll have to think of something else. But after that it could run very simply--I gets yer pieces of eight dollar through PayPal or whatever, and I put you on a special friends filter or members-only community or whatever, and you get to read "Peter Pan in Fifteen Minutes." I mean, that is, if you don't mind helping some Alabama kids get their learn on.

The "encyclopedias from 1942" bit bites. I know of a book effort that takes donations of used books from libraries and schools in the US and sends them to Third World Nations. But really, I'm thinking - instead of just books, why not equip rural US areas with at least one server and a few terminals? It's cheap enough - and the bandwidth is there.

And I thought the globe my grandparents had in their house from circa the Korean War was a relic. Yikes. Sadly, the most recent encyclopedia set my parents have is from 1992, but we got a computer with encarta in 1996. (We got our first computer in 1991 wiht no encarta and no CD-ROM, obvisouly).

There's a list (I believe it was an e-mail forward, so it's on teh internet SOMEWHERE) that had "unofficial" state mottoes. I think for Mississippi the motto was, "Hey, at least we're not Alabama!"

Being an Alabamian myself, I think I'd donate regardless of the reward. Problem is, someone hijacked my pay pal account a few weeks ago, and even though I called them and straightened everything out they're still saying I owe them money that I never authorized payment for.

So is there an alternative payment plan?

I'm sure I'll end up using a variety of things, including but not limited to the Amazon thing I already have set up, money orders, and dollar bills precariously stuck in envelopes.

And good luck getting that PayPal thing straightened out, too.

"dollar bills precariously stuck in envelopes"

Heh. Give me an address, and it's there =D

I still haven't sent the paperwork off to pay pal, so that may have something to do with it. At any rate, I won't be using that service for quite awhile.

sounds like a good idea and one that is worth exploring. there should be no legal issue as parody has long been protected. plus I don't see the mouse making an issue out of it since its charity.

I'd love to donate, but I'm a bit wary about using Paypal. But what with being in another country, I don't know if there's another way.

Well, Vladimir can't even use PayPal in Croatia, for example--not that I'd make him pay; he's probably going to help me edit the thing--but there are places where it isn't even an option. It's a few months off yet, so I'll have time to look into all the options.

Sorry for my last comment. I posted it before I saw your reply to mellifera. Hell, if it means converting some currency and stuffing it in an envelope (or three, for safety) to send to Alabama, I will do that. :D

Btw, sorry to hear about your internet woes. I wouldn't know how to cope. You are stronger than I.

It's nothing about you in particular, Cleo, but I always feel safer when my charitable giving donations go straight from my hand to the cause to which I'm donating. I don't even know if it's possible, but is there a way to somehow ensure that my buck (actually, if it's for education in Alabama, I'd probably send five or ten--depends on how much of my money the Red Cross ends up getting this fall for disaster relief) gets to its destination?

Like I said, nothing personal. Just paranoia.

I totally understand. In fact, the only reason I wanted to collect it myself was because it would be easier to know, for filter purposes, who had and hadn't donated--I'm not sure the charity/recipient can keep up with usernames and whatnot. Honestly, giving money over the internet is a really, really sketchy business, so when I set it up, I really want to make sure everything can be accounted for and that, if possible, we work out something where I handle the money as little as possible but still have access to all the givers' names/usernames. There will definitely be some option where you can bypass me entirely if you feel more comfortable that way.

Not sure if it will cause any problems - but it is worth being aware that the story of Peter Pan is inextribably linked to The Great Ormand Street Children's Hospital in London.....

I don't know if this helps but I play online video games. One of the teams put together a tournament where you have to pay to enter and all the money goes to st Jude’s children's hospital. They had all the people make the check out to St. Jude's but send the checks to them. Have you checked with your agent or publisher? I mean JK Roweling wrote those Harry Potter mini-books (I can't remember the exact ones. I think it was like Quiditch through the ages and another one on magical creatures). Anyways she wrote those books and had the profits go to charity I don't see how it's that different.

Oh, hey! I graduated from Homewood. And God bless Homewood, but there are enough rich parents--fewer than in, say, Mountain Brook, but enough--who are all too willing to open their wallets that I don't really feel the need to fundraise for them.

charging for m15m? Wah!

From: (Anonymous)
I'll be happily paying for the m15m book when it comes to a bookstore near me--and here's an idea, 5% (or whatever) of the sale of each book could go to charity...just a thought; your profits are your own (and well-earned too)--but if you're going to be 'charging' for viewing a m15m online, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has no credit card and therefore no way to send money online. I'd be happy to donate through mailed cash or checks. Maybe you could email a password to those who have mailed their donations, so they can read Peter Pan too.

Ah yes. The Harry Potter connection. I've been meaning to comment on this whole 'Jason Isaacs' thing for a while, 'cause for one thing he was the reason I went to see Peter Pan in the first place. XD

But mainly I guess it's just that I've known he was hot since I first encountered him (Lucius Malfoy in HP (what can I say, I have a thing for villians with long pale hair XD)) but so many of my friends have just gone 'ick!'. In particular they tend to point out the 'old' factor, which just makes me double take every time.

*coughs* This DOES have a point. XD

Basically, it was only at a recent group viewing of Pan that they've actually suddenly gone 'WOW! He's hot.' To which I can do nothing but sit there smugly and be like; I'm way ahead of you guys. XD Laff. *thinks* Interestingly though, a number of them actually thought he was hotter as Mr Darling. Hmmm. I guess I just prefer the whole 'dark angst' thing.

OH! And I've recently gone on a Van Helsing doll obsession, and have to keep resisting buying them. I think of you everytime the issue comes up. XP

Copyright crapola

From: [identity profile] librisia.livejournal.com
My hubby had to take a course in online copyright law. He says there should be no problem with the charity/parody thing because 1) parody has been legally protected by supreme court precedent (well so was the presidency, some of you might say ...) Think Weird Al and 2) since none of the money is going into your pocket, it should be tripply (word? sp?) problem free.

Mind, "should" is the operative term.

Since you have a publisher now, you could always run it by their legal dept. You could also have some adoring fan do the legal footwork for you as well. I'm sure many would volunteer. *cough ME! cough*
