Awww, hell. It looks like Gov. Riley's declared a state of emergency for a hurricane that hasn't even gotten here yet. I'm hearing that it may still be a category 2 by the time it gets to Birmingham, and that we may well lose power. And I have a paper to write... using the online OED. WOOT. So, you know, if I disappear for a few days... that's where I am.

Speaking as a person from Tampa, who's been through this plenty of late (and who until recently was in New Orleans):

Stock up on beer, gatorade, and beef jerky (or whatever your vaguely nutritious, no-cooking-required, doesn't-need-refrigeration snack of choice). Candles. Board games & books. Forget Milk & Eggs.

You'll be fine, just bored if the juice goes out. Find someone to be naked with; that helps pass the time, too. ;-)

Cat 2 is interesting, but not all that dramatic. Cat 4 or 5, what they were talking about if it had walked up my front porch, is a whole 'nother board game. . . not to mention the Hunker Down Drinking Game. *grin*

Do you have access to OED Online? Through school, I guess? Is it as cool as it looks? I've been ogling it for years but couldn't possibly spend $295 a year for it (the individual subscription rate).

$295? Lord have mercy. I would say it's not worth that, but then, I don't know how often you'd use it. I do like the online version because it's very easy to search and it takes up a hell of a lot less space, though (and yeah, I get it through the university).

*sends millions of positive vibes your way*

Hope that you stay safe -- and that you don't lose power =) I lost pour up here (NJ) for about three hours and I was losing it. Was in the middle of a fic, so that may be why but still. =)

Stock up on water and all that good stuff.

Must..NOT...make jokes...about Alabama..being..disaster area. *cough* Sorry. Eh, I bet we get some here in Atlanta, too. If I'm blown away, I'll try and do it genteelly as befitting the culture.

Seriously, good luck and take care.

I can just picture you, calmly fanning yourself, wearing a hoop skirt and a straw hat, being carried off willy-nilly by the weather. I'm afraid such gracefulness isn't as common up my way as it used to be.

And Cleo? Best of luck, and I think that comment about stocking up on beef jerky and other delightful edibles is a good idea.

Get ready for an influx of Floridians in Alabama soon. I live on the Gulf Coast of FL and everybody's freaking out and evacuating up there. They've already set up shelters over here. Hopefully Ivan isn't a five when it hits us. *crosses fingers*

Stay safe!

Eh, nobody knows where this thing's going. I'm also under the watch, and I'm in the far eastern panhandle/big bend area.

Don't sweat it. I have a sinking feeling that you aren't the one who really has to worry. :/

Hey, I'm a native. If Ivan starts turning to the NNE or NE, I've already got plans to haul ass to Georgia.

I know better than to stick around. :) Here's hoping it misses both of us. (Think we could...you know...toss it back at Africa?)

Not cool! Be safe. Batten down the hatches and such. Maybe you can find the magical internet connection that the newscasters have, so that they're able to send emails when the electricity is out...er. Good luck!

Western NC has already been declared a federal disaster area after the remnants of Frances caused 15- to 20-ft floods. Not that anybody's heard about it outside the region. Worst part? We're 400 miles from the coast by the most direct route.

We're just kind of watching Ivan at this point, keeping our fingers crossed. So I cross them for everybody else in Ivan's path. Makes it hard to type, but hey...

I was wondering about you, m'lady. Stay safe.

I'm from Oklahoma, where we have tornadoes - those don't give you time to evacuate, just time enough to grab your pets and find a basement. Although we did have a bad ice storm a few years back that left us without lights or TV (Gaah!) for a week. So I can kinda symphathize.

Some candles, a lantern, and a good book or two and you'll be fine. Good luck on the paper!

Wanna hear something funny? A few days ago, when Ivan was still heading for Jamaica, the main hospital in the Florida Keys discharged as many patients as possible and evacuated the rest to...

Gadsden, AL.

I'm gonna laugh into forever if they have to reevacuate to Florida. I mean, I know it's unlikely. But I'm gonna laaaaaaugh.

Don't remember if you have pets, but...

if you do, remember that most public shelters will NOT accept them if you have to evacuate to said shelter; most hotels/motels WILL, however - call first.

With that said, Best of luck with Ivan, and STAY SAFE!! Oh, if there are any left in the state, GET EXTRA BATTERIES!!

HUGS...!

As an excuse, you can't beat "The hurricane ate my homework!"

Cleo, may your hurricane be exhilarating but uneventful. I went through Gloria back in 1986. (I'm your age to within a month.) My sister and I sat in the hallway and filled up those really BIG coloring books. Our yard looked like a jungle afterward, but nothing really dangerous fell on the house. Hope things go as well for you.
