Just a quick note--I should have said this last night, but since a lot of folks in the comments seem to be struggling with old computers, the Dell sale continues through Wednesday. I think it's 10% off desktops and 10-15% off notebooks. Unfortunately, free shipping ended yesterday--I just randomly decided to go window-shop for my new computer, saw the free shipping offer, and realized I needed to get my ass in gear and order mine that night. I picked out everything I wanted online and then called the 1-800 number and double-checked everything with the guy, who recommended that I upgrade a few things but also said I should drop others, once we'd discussed what I was actually going to use it for. So they're nice, and they're helpful.

...and they also make you pay through the nose for proprietary spares once warranty runs out. $150 fans come to mind - no joke.

I can beat that... the cd burner in my laptop would cost me $460 to replace. It's an 8 speed... I bought an external dvd burner for $120 and I'm getting a $50 rebate on that... so end cost is only $70 and tax (tax on $120)... it's external so it's not portable but I never seem to need to burn something away from home anyway so it works just dandy and I can burn dvd's with it too. Why they would charge so damn much for a replacement part is anyones guess. Must be their way of telling me they don't want any repeat business... not that they would get it anyway, my next puter is going to be an Apple.

Aint that the truth! Wait til you try to buy ink!!!!!

I hate my dell. I usually go back to my old emachine on dialup because it's an all around better computer, but if I was buying new and couldn't afford Apple ( and I can't afford the apple of my dreams), I'd go HP.

If you think Dell sucks, wait til you experience HP. The only brand-name manufacturer that I put any trust in is IBM. It's that, or build your own from off-the-shelf components.

I have in fact heard bad stories about HPs. If you buy (and keep up) the extended warranties with Dell, you're mostly OK. I've had a guy come from 40 miles away to, at separate times, replace a CD-ROM drive and a sound card (in the second case, it ended up not being a hardware issue anyway) at no cost to me. I honestly forget what the warranty cost (it's been a while) but it was worth it. I think I stll have an option to renew for another 2 years and I'm taking it.

Exactly. I just bought a four-year "We will replace everything and come to your house if we have to, so help us" warranty, and if I still have this computer after four years and it has problems? I will take it as a sign that I need to get a new one.

You chose Dell over Apple? Hmm... For this kind of money I would have definitely went with a nice new G5 from Apple... but then again I grew up using Macintosh computers and I've always preferred them over PC's. The only thing that PC's are still much better for is games... and in my opinion consoles are better for games... so I'd rather have a Mac for computer stuff and a PS2 for game stuff. But that's just me. As far as PC's go, it sounds like you are getting a good one.

I didn't like the Dell desktop I got circa 2000, although they changed them about a year later and made the cost about 1/3rd as much (my dad has one now that's black and all sleek looking). Last summer as a graduation gift my parents got me a sony vaio V505 notebook. It's 4-1/2 pounds, 12 inch screen, and has tinanium casing. It's gorgeous. :-D My old Dell had a 10 gig hard drive, this one has a 40 gig hard drive and the DVD/CD-RW combo drive. It's amazing how fast computers upgrade. Now a lot of laptops have 60 gig hard drives. Back when I bought my Dell you'd be hard pressed to find a laptop with anything over 10.

Congrats on your new wattage. Mippage? Byteage? Floppage? Insert cute 'puter word here. Dell's ok. Much better than Compaq, anyway. Are they still in business? I forget.

Oh, wait, I have to say something disparaging about Dell PCs, as it seems de rigueur ..forgot. Ok, here goes: WHAT???!!!?? NO AMIGA!!??!! There! :)

I am typing on my Dell notebook (Latitude, w00t!) at this very moment. So far it hasn't been bad. My only wish is that the keyboard was laid out like a desktop keyboard. But no, that'd be too good to be true. :P

Look away from the Wal-Mart special! (true, alas... but the shipping was free, if you don't count gas...) It was running well until my fiance came home with a scanner he got for five dollars (cue sea of red flags) and scroo'd up something...

Off-topic - Cleo, are you getting anything nasty from the leftovers of Frances?

Eh, we're okay--some rain and nasty wind for a couple of days, but we actually had some sun late this afternoon. I think Birmingham has come through it unscathed. :)

Hi! You told me to remind you about the Anne Hathaway Herione Addict icon if I didn't see it up. So either you haven't had time to make (which is totally cool), or I am teh blind and missed it on your photobucket site. I'd love to know when you make it, so just shoot me an e-mail when you get a chance to do it. But no hurry whatsoever, I know you're busy.

Thanks for reminding me--I had to clean half a gig off just to get things to keep working, so that's taken me a while, but I can use Photoshop again now too. I'll see if I can't get that done tomorrow. :)
