More randomness:

Why is it that parents have this utterly unerring instinct to walk in at the worst possible moment? I have finally managed to be in the same room as the first half of the "I Love the 90s" series, and my mother has this wild hair on to move shit of mine into the attic. She's had it on for a week, but today it is GOING. TO GET. DONE. So when does she come in? During the Thelma and Louise segment? No. The Garth Brooks segment? No. The "90210" segment? No. The precise moment the comedians are discussing exactly what Jodie Foster got hit in the face with in Silence of the Lambs? WINNAH!

"So which boxes are ready to go?"

"THESE THREE RIGHT HERE!"

"You sure? What are you going to put in the corner? Are you going to move the shelf there?"

"I DON'T KNOW!"

"Why are you so cranky?"

[The phrase "man-gravy" floats over from the TV five feet away.]

"WE'RE TAKING THESE BOXES INTO THE HALL NOW!!"

So. The boxes are moved. The mother is disposed of. 1993 is on. My horoscope: "You want a warm bath of nostalgia, when what you need is the cold air of reality." Shut up, horoscope.

(The crazy thing about watching these shows is that it's like, hi, here are all the movies that are supposed to be in the book. Beth Littleford: "I would never go to Jurassic Park. Absolutely fucking not!")

(P.S. Edwin McCain does the best Ross Perot EVER.)

* * *

Last night we watched Spirited Away, which I saw in the theater last year but hadn't seen since. The crazy thing about the movie is that, the first time you see it, it's this amazingly original thing and you seriously cannot predict from one moment to the next what's going to happen. The second time you see it--it's still amazing and original, but it doesn't seem haphazard at all--everything operates within its own dream logic, its own fairy-tale logic.

Casting around for something to read on the train--needs to be something I have on hand, for ultimate convenience. Wondering if I should take the Colette bio with me... I need to catch up on my library books, but it just seems like a bad idea to take a book that doesn't actually belong to you to a different state. Maybe Ivanhoe, that's a fun book--oh, hey, I never did get around to reading Stephen King's On Writing; prolly ought to read that.

I really want a doughnut. We went back to Sol Azteca last night, The Lovely Emily and I (and her brother and his girlfriend), and I had another margarita (after promising Em that I would not come home and find something to throw an internet temper tantrum about. Friends don't let friends type drunk), and then we went to find Krispy Kremes. Except that... we did not do such a good job of finding them. I mean, we knew the one that's near her house, but since we were camped out at mine for the evening, it seemed silly to go almost all the way back to her house, so we decided to find the one on First Avenue. This was not so much a good idea. We were at least fortunate in that it was still daylight, because we ended up driving up and down from beginning to end with no luck, joking about printing up T-shirts that read, "I GOT SHOT FOR DONUTS AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS STUPID T-SHIRT." (Except that all the Os would be doughnuts.) Finally we gave in and went to the Hoover store. Mmmm. Must... have... more...

I know exactly what you are talking about. And then she wonders why I'm so angry and tells me I never want to talk. Except my mother tends to walk in when someone on tv is making an obscene sexual reference.

This is why she thinks I'm involved in the online porn industry. *facepalm*

Oh I do so love living on my own. I can wander around naked and say things like "Benzalkonium chloride! Fuck!" loudly at two in the morning, and no one notices. Possibly because they're too busy setting off fireworks underneath my window.

Man-gravy. What a way with words.

I feel the same way about "Spirited Away." It's really neat that it's the sort of cartoon that enraptures adults who would otherwise be way to old for cartoons.

Hmph, be happy you can remember the 90's. During most of the 90's I was either outside running wild with my cousins or inside playing with my barbies. Or watching My Little Pony.

Have you ever stopped at a Krispy Kreme just because the 'Hot Donuts Now!' sign was flashing? I swear, ever time we go to Pensacola, that sign is flashing and we're attracted to it likes moths to a lightbulb...

Hee. I remember first becoming aware of pop culture beyond cartoons and toys in about 1992 or so, and I must have been about 13. So I was just emerging from the cocoon at that point.

(I still have every single My Little Pony I ever owned in the back of my closet. Like, mansion and ice cream shop and everything.)

We only have three Kremes in town--one's out in BFE, one's on First Avenue, as previously mentioned, but is apparently hidden like one of those shops in Harry Potter, and the third isn't really in my way. But we managed to get there while the sign was on last night. Mmmmm.

The First Avenue N one is on the right in East Lake, almost all the way to Huffman/Roebuck/Center Point.
I promise it isn't hidden, and that place totally does some business at night. But yeah, the Hoover one is the one you're least likely to be shot at.

omfg, the thing about your mom sounds JUST like my mom. She'll walk in right when something important is on tv, start yapping on about something or other and I'm trying to give her short answers that I accidently yell, then she wonders why i'm cranky like she COULDNT SEE that I'm obviously watching something. *shakes head*

Spirited away: I love that film, it is so beautiful. I got it cheap on dvd two days ago, but haven't rewatched it yet, I saw it at a friend's house a couple of months back.

Have you seen Princess Mononuke? I bet you have. If you haven't - do. I prefer it to Spirited Away. Mostly because of these fantastic little white forest creatures with rattling heads.
(Must. Have.)

Yeah, I like Mononoke a little bit better--I think Spirited Away is probably more satisfying as a narrative, but yeah, I just love the world they have in Mononoke.

I think they need to make another film with those little white creatures in them. I went completely mental when I saw them :) Especially when they were "surfing" in the tree tops. So cute!

They need to have little bobblehead dolls of those critters, if they don't already. With heads you can spin around. I would never stop playing with that thing if they did.

Ooh. That also sounds like something I want.

Another thing I want is the Puss in boots from Shrek 2. As a plush toy. That's got to be available, right? It's not released yet over here so I don't know what merch we'll get at work. Only stuff I've seen is PlayDoh for Shrek2, which didn't impress me too much.

Kudama toys

For whatever reason, they never put out any Kudama (Little white tree spirits with bobbly-heads) plushies--that I can find.

I know they have Mononoke-hime puzzles, playing cards, stationary, and I think pencils, but I can find no plushies. And they're expencive, because they have to be imported from Japan. I bought the playing cards for $14. I heart them to pieces, but it was a blow to my money bags. And an even harder blow because they have differnt pictures only on the face cards.

Oh! They have the soundtrack, too!

I got the cards at a Japanese Healthy Restuarant (fear my mad spelling skills) called Yoshimatsu. I don't know if they have anywhere but in Tucson (Arizona). But they have lots of anime stuff, and instant udon, which always makes my day.

Oh! When I'm wathcing a rented movie with her, especially one I've been trying to get her to watch, she'll just randomly point to a character and go "Is he the one who dies/gets married/joins the Mafia/whatever?" or she'll blurt out, "Oh, I know what's going to happen! She's going to ______, isn't she?"

Then she gets made if I don't tell her, or try to shush her. She's insane.

On Writing was actually pretty good, even though most of his novels past the late '80s or so sucked, in my opinion.

Chris Rock was dead on when he said nobody would be surprised if they found out Krispy Kremes had crack in them. Mmm...

So I had this thought, while watching I Love the 90's, that they should hire you to do commentary on I Love the 90's Lashes Out (or Strikes Back, whichever you prefer). It'd be hilarious.

I'd watch it, anyway.

Wondering if I should take the Colette bio with me.....

Which bio?

I love Colette. I read The Vagabond (which feels like auto-bio) first of her works, after Linda Ronstadt got on the Tonight Show, said she's read it and yearned to do a Victorian stage show.....which led to her doing Pirates of Penzance with the New York Public Theatre.

I find Colette's works send me into a reverie. I have to set the book down and absorb her sensory descriptions.

Reading about her sounds perfect for a train trip.

Have no idea what "I love the 90s" is, but everyone in LJ is trying to watch it. Has everyone suddenly run out of VCRs? she commented without meaning to insult them.

Basically, it's a 10-part series on VH1 with a bunch of current comedians and has-beens from the decade--not to put too fine a point on it--making fun of the '90s. Each year gets an hour, and they're rerunning it like crazy, so it's easy to just be like, "Eh, I'll catch it the next time it comes on, which is--ooo, tomorrow! And the next day! And the day after that!" Also, you get to watch Craig Ferguson act out the birth of Christ with Beanie Babies.

My VCR, she ded. I unhooked it to move something, and now I can't get it hooked back up. What I really want is TiVo, but I'ma have to save up a bit more for that.

Oh, and the Colette bio is Judith Therman's Secrets of the Flesh: A Life of Colette.

If you liked "Spirited Away", I definitely recommend seeing "Memories", an anime collection of three vignettes. The first segment, "Magnetic Rose", is about space travelers who board a desolate ship (made up of debris), inhabited by a reclusive opera singer, and is controlled by computers and robots.
It's just unreal, one of the most fantastic and original things I've ever seen. The artwork is excellent, as well. I just saw "Memories" this weekend, and WOW.

Like, WHOA.

I love the 90s on "Man Gravy"...
